Chapter 223: Chapter 223: Loss

"Mr. Fu... your wife’s mother passed away in the nursing home."

Fu Shinian distinctly remembered that it was February 1, 2016, the Little New Year according to the lunar calendar, just seven days before the Spring Festival. His grandmother had repeatedly instructed him over the phone to bring Su Mu home for a family reunion meal. He verbally agreed, thinking indeed he should resolve the issues between them before the New Year.

If Song Yi hadn’t appeared later, he thought, he probably would have taken the initiative to look for Su Mu.

But, there were no ifs.

When Fu Shinian arrived at the nursing home, both Qiao Yu and Wei Shaoqin had already arrived; he, who should have been the first to get there, was ironically the last to arrive. He saw Su Mu sitting on the now-empty bed, facing away from him, motionlessly staring out the window, with Jiang Bei beside her, tightly clinging to her shoulders.

Like a still painting.

Wei Shaoqin was the first to notice Fu Shinian. He opened his mouth as if to say something, but ultimately no sound came out. Eventually, it was Qiao Yu who stepped forward and said softly,

"Since the incident happened, Su Mu hasn’t said a word, shed a tear, just sitting there, not listening to anyone, as if she has shut out all sounds."

Qiao Yu pursed his lips:

"You know, people are not afraid of sorrow, nor of crying, but burying all emotions deep inside without releasing them can lead to problems. I don’t care what you think about the issues between you, but right now, you can’t provoke her anymore. Whatever decision you have, it should wait until she gets through this period, okay?"

Fu Shinian didn’t speak, but Qiao Yu knew that his words had reached Fu Shinian.

Wei Shaoqin walked over and gently patted Jiang Bei’s shoulder. When Jiang Bei turned around and saw Fu Shinian at the doorway, she should have exploded - that was her usual reflex whenever she saw Fu Shinian. But this time, she miraculously held back, anxiously glanced at the still silent Su Mu, and finally, carefully stood up from beside Su Mu. As she passed by Fu Shinian, she said:

"I’m begging you, don’t hurt her anymore..."

This was the first time Fu Shinian saw the tough-as-iron Jiang Bei begging him, yet she was begging him not to hurt his own wife. Even his friend had advised him similarly a minute ago. He couldn’t help but think to himself just how terrible he must have been to the woman sitting there for those close to him to keep reminding him of this issue?

Soon, only the two of them were left in the room. After a minute of silence, Fu Shinian walked over, pulled up a chair, and sat down in front of Su Mu.

They hadn’t been apart for long since his return from New York on January 22 to today, just 10 days, yet she seemed to have lost some weight. It appeared that each parting made her look especially haggard, a reason Fu Shinian knew all too well but didn’t want to think about at the moment.

"Su Mu..." he softly began, "your mother has been unconscious in the nursing home for two full years. You should have been prepared. Being like this now only makes those around you worry and certainly won’t wake your mother."

Fu Shinian was never good at consoling people. He only analyzed problems from a rational perspective because being rational often hurt a person’s sensitive nerves the most. The old Su Mu might have been stung by his words, but this time it was as if she hadn’t heard him at all, maintaining her position without even blinking.

Her eyes were dry, without a single tear.

"I’ve never met your mother, but I know from the photos at Bishui Yuntian that she was a woman of unique temperament, proud and thoughtful. A woman like that wouldn’t want to spend her life unconscious in a hospital bed. Instead of this cold, unfeeling hospital room, she’d probably rather be by your father’s side."

Su Mu remained silent.

That afternoon, Fu Shinian unusually spoke a lot to Su Mu, but ultimately, he was met with the same result as everyone else. Later, even the old lady rushed over from the old house, but Su Mu was like a soulless person, unrecognizable to everyone.

Jiang Bei couldn’t let Su Mu continue this way, so with a tentative attitude, she made a call to Wen Han. Her original intention was for Wen Shaoyuan to give it a try, but it so happened that Wen Han was at home that day, and he appeared at the sanatorium with Wen Shaoyuan.

When Qiao Yu saw Wen Han, she slightly furrowed her brows:

"Aren’t you just adding to the chaos?"

"I don’t want to add to the chaos," Jiang Bei said firmly, "I just want to see Susu talk, nothing more."

Qiao Yu didn’t say anything more.

When Fu Shinian walked out of the ward and saw Wen Han preparing to take Wen Shaoyuan into the ward, Wen Han nodded faintly as a greeting. Qiao Yu stood by, fearing Fu Shinian would lose his temper and start throwing punches, but he didn’t. He slightly nodded, displaying all his politeness and grace to the utmost.

At the end of the corridor, Fu Shinian and Qiao Yu stood side by side in front of the window. Seeing Fu Shinian smoking furiously, Qiao Yu knew he was troubled internally, but even though it was difficult, he wouldn’t say anything at this moment, only observing the bustling ward entrance, he couldn’t help but remark sarcastically:

"When Su Mu’s mother was alive, she didn’t have this many people visiting her. Now that she has passed away, the traffic in and out of this ward seems to have increased."

Upon hearing this, Fu Shinian looked up at Qiao Yu, who sensed his gaze and looked back, knowing what he was thinking, so he didn’t hide anything:

"In the more than two years you and Su Mu were married, you never once stepped in here, did you?"

Fu Shinian wanted to say something, but opened his mouth and realized there wasn’t much to say, because Qiao Yu was speaking the truth. Over two years, he had never treated Su Mu as a wife, so naturally, he didn’t see her mother as his family, whereas Su Mu treated the old lady like her own grandmother.

At that moment, Song Yi came over and said to Fu Shinian:

"Qin Nianwan has disappeared."

Fu Shinian slightly furrowed his brows:

"When did this happen?"

"This morning. She ran away while the person watching her went to the restroom. She left a doll in the bed covered with a blanket. From a distance, it looked just like a person lying there, so the people at the door didn’t realize in time. They only noticed something was wrong just now and then called."

Perhaps just to avoid her fate going to R Country, Fu Shinian really wanted to think that way, but his intuition told him that things couldn’t be so simple. He vaguely sensed something but didn’t dare to confirm, and instructed Song Yi:

"Go check, but keep it quiet for now."

"Yes."

After Song Yi left, Qiao Yu, seeing Fu Shinian slightly frowning, couldn’t help but speak, "What are you worried about?"

Fu Shinian shook his head:

"Nothing much, I hope I’m just overthinking."
