Chapter 19: Chapter 19 I Don’t Want to Sleep Separately from You

Su Mu was momentarily stunned; she hadn’t expected Fu Shinian to discover the words she had absentmindedly scribbled on the curb while killing time. She replied indifferently,

"It’s nothing."

"Writing my name on the street for cars to run over and people to trample at will? Are you cursing me?"

Su Mu opened her mouth intending to deny it, but Fu Shinian had already gotten ahead of her by opening the car door, getting in, and taking something from the back seat before standing in front of the car waiting for her:

"Since you don’t want grandma to find out, do you think we should go in together?"

Su Mu got out of the car and, seeing he had no intention of going inside, tentatively looped her arm gently through his. When he didn’t object, she slowly let out a sigh of relief.

Upon entering, both of them unconsciously donned a different facade. Grandmother was sitting in a wicker chair by the floor-to-ceiling window, reading a book. Seeing them come in arm in arm made her smile. She took off her glasses and rose from the chair:

"You’re back?"

Su Mu released Fu Shinian’s hand and walked over to greet her grandmother:

"Did you have a good rest, grandma?"

"Yes, I’m happy when I see you two are well." She then looked at Fu Shinian and saw the array of small packages in his hands, her tone not as stern as it had been in the morning: "What did you buy to eat? Take it to Auntie Wang and have her prepare it."

Fu Shinian noticed that Su Mu was somewhat absent-minded, glancing at the sky and then towards the kitchen as if pressed for time. Grandma had to ask her twice before she finally responded:

"If you have things to do, go ahead. I can stay here and keep grandma company."

On hearing this, Su Mu glanced at Fu Shinian, regretting that her behavior had been so blatantly obvious. She then looked back at her grandmother, who laughed, "Go on, but don’t venture out too far. Auntie Wang cooks quickly; dinner will be ready soon."

"Okay." Su Mu quickly agreed and got up, rushing out. Fu Shinian watched her retreating figure, his gaze lingering on her long after she had gone.

The old lady, however, had been watching Fu Shinian’s expression all along and chuckled softly:

"Some people might be right in front of you, but it’s hard to tell when they might disappear around the corner."

Fu Shinian turned to look at the old lady:

"What are you trying to say?"

"What I want to say has already been told to you many times. I told you to cherish Su Mu; she’s a good girl. As for Qin Nianwan, let the past be the past. Don’t make the mistake of hurting Su Mu because of outsiders."

Fu Shinian smiled lightly:

"Grandma, you seem to really like Su Mu. You’ve met Qin Nianwan before, but you never treated her the way you do Su Mu."

"Of course, I like her. The moment I saw Susu, I felt a connection with that child. Even though she married you through a transaction at the beginning, these two years she has been genuine with you. I can tell she genuinely likes you. As for Qin Nianwan..." The grandmother glanced at Fu Shinian: "You know better in your heart than I do."

After a few seconds of silence, Fu Shinian stood up: "I’m going out for a smoke."

Fu Shinian had just lit up a cigarette on the lawn when An Le came bounding over and sat next to him, tilting his head and wagging his tongue as he looked up at him. Fu Shinian cast his gaze downwards at him:

"Do you want to go for a walk?"

At the entrance of the old house, Fu Shinian asked the security guard:

"Which way did Mrs. Fu go?"

"The Madam went west."

Fu Shinian acknowledged and began walking westward with An Le.

When he could see Su Mu’s figure from a distance, Fu Shinian stopped. He saw her squatting where she had boarded the car earlier, holding a pebble and scribbling something chaotically, with forceful strokes. The waning sunlight cast from her direction, enveloping her entirely, stretching her shadow out long and far in the picturesque scene.

Fu Shinian walked toward her.

As he got closer, An Le seemed to recognize Su Mu not far ahead and no longer toddled behind Fu Shinian, instead scampering joyfully towards her.

Su Mu was startled. She thought An Le had sneakily followed her out until Fu Shinian stood before her:

"You wrote it, so why erase it?"

Su Mu didn’t look at him and continued to play with An Le: "I just don’t want my handwriting trampled by others."

Fu Shinian watched her, silent.

On the way back, they walked a considerable distance apart, neither speaking. An Le happily wagged his tail as he walked between them in sync with their pace. Much later, Su Mu told Fu Shinian that was the most beautiful walk she’d ever had, so beautiful that she wanted it to go on forever.

After dinner, the grandmother didn’t let them leave and even bluntly suggested that from now on, every Friday after work, they should come over and stay for two days at the old house. Su Mu knew it was all for her sake, but what she didn’t know was, once back in their room just the two of them, whether Fu Shinian would feel it was her machination again.

Su Mu was the first to return to the room. As she was taking a shower, the bathroom door suddenly opened, startling her. Instinctively, she reached for a bath towel to cover herself, but the next moment, Fu Shinian appeared at the entrance of the shower.

Despite their countless intimate encounters, Su Mu still wasn’t accustomed to being so vulnerably exposed and didn’t dare to look directly at him:

"I’ve finished washing..."

Su Mu wanted to leave this overly intimate and dangerous place, but Fu Shinian stood at the entrance of the shower and showed no intention of moving aside. He looked at the somewhat flustered Su Mu:

"Why cover up? There’s not a single part of you that I haven’t seen."

"Do you want to take a shower? Then I’ll go out first." Su Mu tried to talk her way out and leave by his side, but he captured her arm: "If I remember correctly, you’ve already completed the confinement period, haven’t you?"

Indeed, that time had passed, but the memories of the last time were too traumatic for Su Mu, and she didn’t want to:

"The doctor said..."

"Qiao Yu? What did he say? I’ll call and ask him..."

"No, there’s no need." Su Mu was somewhat nervous, but she also knew that her objections were futile. As long as she was still his wife, there was no avoiding marital relations. She fell silent for a few seconds: "I’m going to blow-dry my hair first."

This time, Fu Shinian didn’t stop her.

Fu Shinian washed up quickly. Su Mu’s hair was still not dry when he came out of the bathroom. Standing at the doorway, he watched Su Mu, who sat at the vanity, making her even more uneasy.

Su Mu had always been resistant to sex. She wasn’t sensitive to it and, to use Fu Shinian’s words, she was simply frigid. She roughly knew why she felt this way. Coupled with the lack of emotional foundation with Fu Shinian and his disregard for her feelings, her resistance had grown stronger over time.

Yet while she resisted, she also knew that she couldn’t escape.

After her hair was dry, Su Mu didn’t want to turn off the hairdryer, but Fu Shinian, who was already sitting on the bed, spoke up:

"Are you planning to delay until I fall asleep?"

Su Mu turned off the hairdryer, stood up, and walked over, but as soon as she reached the bedside, Fu Shinian pulled her hand and dragged her down on top of him. Su Mu’s breath halted for a few seconds. As she recovered, she found her memory of the last time became even clearer. While Fu Shinian was busy untying her nightgown, she took the last chance:

"Could we... do it in another way?"

Fu Shinian stopped his movements, propped himself up slightly, and looked at her with disbelief in his eyes: "Do you plan to always have marital relations this way?"

Su Mu nodded slightly, then shook her head. She felt she wouldn’t always be like this, that things would improve, and then their relationship could go back to how it had been at the beginning.

"Give me some time, okay?"

She asked tentatively, meek as a kitten, a stark contrast to her defiant departure earlier in the afternoon. Fu Shinian couldn’t help but look at her a few times longer: "Scared?"

Su Mu didn’t answer, which was equivalent to admission.

Fu Shinian got out of bed, and just as Su Mu breathed a sigh of relief, she saw him open the drawer of the nightstand and take out a small pink bottle of medicine. With just one glance, Su Mu knew what he intended to do. She sat up, ready to flee, but Fu Shinian noticed in time:

"Su Mu, I’ll respect you today. If you’re unwilling, we can just sleep now, but you should know that a man can put up with discomfort once or twice, but not forever. If it’s not you, it will be someone else."

The room fell silent for a few seconds. Just as Fu Shinian’s patience was running out and he was about to put the medicine back, Su Mu spoke:

"That thing you just said, can I take it as you haven’t done anything with Qin Nianwan?"

"Whether or not I’ve done anything with Qin Nianwan, you are Mrs. Fu. The person who should be with me is you, and that’s also your duty. You’d better recognize that."

Su Mu opened her mouth as if to say something, but ultimately didn’t make a sound. Fu Shinian had already seen her attitude and said nothing more, covering her once again.

Throughout the process, Su Mu was detached. She refused to use the medicine, so it was very painful, but she endured because she wanted a child of her own with Fu Shinian, fearing the medicine might affect the baby.

But then she thought that Fu Shinian might not want her to have his child; after all, he had made it clear last time: "You’re not worthy of having my child."

When everything was over, Fu Shinian left for the washroom without any lingering affection. Su Mu lay exhausted on the bed, breathing feebly, her hair like seaweed sticking to her sweaty back, resembling a water lily hauled out of the water.

The night she returned from the old house, Fu Shinian went back to Bishui Yuntian. By then, Su Mu had already had dinner, thinking he would not return as usual. She hadn’t expected him to push the door open just as she was about to go to the bathroom to shower.

Su Mu was startled:

"You’re back?"

Fu Shinian looked at her, his face void of emotion:

"Did you touch the stuff in the guest room?"

Only then did Su Mu realize that indeed, during the days when Fu Shinian was not home, she had moved everything he had taken to the guest room a month ago back to their bedroom. She had thought he might get angry, but she didn’t want to drift further apart from him before the final outcome was clear.

"I don’t want to sleep separately from you."

Fu Shinian chuckled lightly, closing the distance step by step:

"Can I take that statement as you asking me to make love to you?"

"I didn’t..."

"Su Mu, your wish is my command!"
