Chapter 20: Chapter 20 Kidnapping

Several days after returning from the old mansion, Su Mu found two part-time jobs. One was handing out flyers on the street while wearing a mascot costume for a bubble tea shop, and the other was working as a designated driver at night.

She also wanted to find a steady job to quickly repay her debts to Jiang Bei, but because of Wei Shaoqin, she hadn’t received a single interview invitation. Or, as soon as they heard her name, they would directly pass—pressuring her to come crawling back. But what he didn’t know was that she couldn’t wait that long.

It was now August, and Shen City was like a giant steamer, almost cooking people alive. Su Mu was drenched in sweat inside the heavy mascot costume, yet the flyers in her hand were hardly being distributed. The weather was so hot that even the usually busy pedestrian street was deserted; those few who were out hurried by, unwilling to linger outdoors. Nevertheless, Su Mu persisted, never expecting to run into Fu Shiyue in such circumstances.

The bubble tea shop owner, seeing how Su Mu diligently worked even in the sweltering heat, invited her in to sit down when it was less busy. Su Mu thanked her and took a seat in the most secluded corner of the shop. Once she removed her costume head and the cool air hit her face, she felt truly revitalized. She knew beforehand that this job would be tough, but only through her firsthand experience did she understand its full range of hardships.

The owner was a young woman in her twenties, whom everyone called Chacha. She had a gentle and handsome boyfriend, whom Su Mu heard Chacha address as Oolong. At that moment, Chacha brought over a cold drink and set it in front of Su Mu:

"You’ve worked hard."

"Thank you."

Su Mu heard a familiar voice and, following the sound, spotted Fu Shiyue. She wasn’t alone; several young men and women of similar age were with her, looking like they were out for fun. Su Mu didn’t want Shiyue to see her, fearing what kind of humiliating words she might say, so she quietly moved behind a potted plant.

Su Mu originally thought it would be enough to just hide and become invisible, but then she overheard a truth she had never considered possible.

"Shiyue, how is your sister-in-law doing?"

Fu Shiyue indifferently replied, "Why bring her up? It’s a buzzkill."

"Didn’t you have someone assault her a few days ago? What’s the situation now? Has your brother divorced her yet? My sister is eagerly waiting to have a fling with your brother."

Fu Shiyue let out a light sneer:

"With that plastic surgery face of your sister? Perhaps in the next life! I fear my brother will vomit at the sight of her!"

The words were rude and showed a lack of upbringing, but with the Fu family’s status, even if there were many grievances inside, one would still plaster on a flattering smile: "I’m just speaking off the cuff, you know? After all, Shinian is Shen City’s most eligible bachelor for a one-night stand, as voted by the socialites."

Fu Shiyue was silent for a few seconds before speaking again with a voice full of venom:

"The person I hired last time didn’t succeed and even got discovered by my brother. He has already warned me not to lay a finger on that cheap woman. I shouldn’t act rashly these few days. She had damn good luck last time, but once the opportunity arises, I’ll make sure she gets taken by ten or eight men!"

A jolt went through Su Mu’s heart. She had never thought that the attack she experienced outside Bishui Yuntian was no accident but was orchestrated, and laughably by her husband’s sister.

She hated Su Mu to such an extent.

Hearing Shiyue’s words, it was clear that Shinian knew, yet he had said nothing. Was he worried that she would cause trouble for Shiyue?

Ever since the two were summoned to the old mansion by their grandmother, Shinian actually did start coming home every night, which caused Su Mu a bit of trouble, as it limited the number of driving jobs she could take. She couldn’t take orders after ten o’clock anymore.

That day, Su Mu came back at half-past ten, never expecting that Shinian would also return early. As she walked toward the master bedroom at the second-floor landing, the sound of a door opening made her turn her head, and she saw Shinian, wearing home clothes, coming out of the study, his gaze lightly sweeping over her:

"One would think Mrs. Fu is some VIP, coming home even later than I do, the head of the Fu Corporation."

"Recently, it’s the important period for hotel star evaluations."

Shinian approached:

"It’s been more than a month since you plied Director Sun with drinks, hasn’t it? Su Mu, have you forgotten that the Fu Corporation also covers the hotel industry?"

"I..."

"You don’t have to explain to me." Shinian cut off her explanation: "I’ve said it before, do whatever you want outside, but you’d best not let me find out you’re cheating on me. Otherwise, no one’s face will be spared!"

In the master bedroom, as Shinian went into the bathroom to shower, he noticed Su Mu was still following him, a bit like An Le in the old mansion. He turned to look at her:

"Want to join?"

Su Mu immediately shook her head in denial:

"I just want to ask you about something."

"Go on."

"About the robbery last time, I never asked you, did Ji Nanfeng catch the perpetrator? Who was it? How did the police deal with it?"

Shinian looked up at her:

"What are you trying to say?"

"It was Shiyue, right?"

Fu Shinian didn’t speak; he just looked at her quietly, and within that gaze, Su Mu found her answer.

"Why would she do this? I’ve been with the Fu family for two years, and even though she may not like me, I’ve never hurt her. I’ve even been cautiously trying to please her. Even if she doesn’t care for that, there’s absolutely no need to use such underhanded methods to ruin me!"

Fu Shinian chuckled lightly, playing with a lighter as he spoke softly:

"Ruin you? Perhaps in Shiyue’s eyes, you have also ruined her."

Su Mu frowned.

"Shiyue and Qin Nianwan are like sisters. In her heart, she was the natural choice for sister-in-law. Yet you, by despicable means, shattered Shiyue’s dream of having a sister-in-law. Isn’t that also a form of destruction?"

"So you’re saying, you approve of what Shiyue did?"

Fu Shinian stopped fiddling with the lighter and looked up at her:

"Approve? Su Mu, if I approved of Fu Shiyue’s actions, then I wouldn’t have caught that man and crippled his hands, nor would I have gone up to Fu Shiyue’s face and slapped her. In your heart, do I, Fu Shinian, really seem like someone who can’t distinguish right from wrong?"

Su Mu was clearly stunned:

"No, I just... I just never thought you would stand up for me."

Fu Shinian stepped closer to her:

"You’re right, I really had no intention of standing up for you. But you are, after all, Mrs. Fu now. If something truly happened, it would be my, Fu Shinian’s, face that is lost."

"Just because of that?"

"What else?" Fu Shinian sized her up, chuckling lightly: "Could it be that you’re fantasizing that I feel heartache for you? Not having fallen asleep, you’re already dreaming. Su Mu, your imagination is truly nothing short of rich."

After saying this, Fu Shinian no longer paid attention to Su Mu and went straight into the bathroom, leaving her standing alone in the vast master bedroom, silent and still, for a very, very long time...

When Su Mu went to the milk tea shop the next day, business was good; Chacha and Oolong were bustling about busily. However, Su Mu could tell that Chacha was in a bad mood, but since they weren’t close, it wasn’t her place to ask.

Just as she was about to come out of the storeroom dressed in a bulky mascot costume, she happened to see Chacha desperately trying to suppress her emotions, her eyes rimmed red, while Oolong, busy serving customers with his back to her, saw none of it. It seemed Oolong hadn’t seen her bring over the drinks, and when he turned around to look for her, he noticed something was off.

"What’s wrong?"

Chacha’s tears started to fall: "Do you have any idea how tired I am today?"

Oolong froze for a second, then apologized softly:

"Sorry."

Then he turned away, and just when Su Mu thought he was going to serve the customers, he retrieved the money he just took from the cash register and returned it to the customers, apologizing:

"I’m really sorry, but something urgent has come up, and we’re closing for the day."

Amidst the customers’ complaints, he seemed not to hear, untied his apron, and returned to Chacha’s side, smiling: "Let’s go home."

Standing to the side, Su Mu suddenly felt this was the most beautiful declaration of love she had ever heard.

Naturally, Su Mu was no longer needed to work either. Chacha gave her the day off with pay. After thanking her, Su Mu left the milk tea shop. Although her day’s plans were disrupted, seeing Oolong’s care and consideration for Chacha made her ultimately happy. Unable to go home and with no other jobs to do, Su Mu decided to visit her mother at the sanatorium after leaving the pedestrian street.

However, it seemed Su Mu hadn’t checked her fortunes before leaving home that day, habitually unable to stick to plans. As she stood at the bus stop after leaving the sanatorium, a black business car slowly stopped in front of her, and before she could react, two men in black quickly got out, grabbed her from both sides, and stuffed her into the car. The entire action was swift as flowing water; she didn’t even get the chance to scream.

Only when the car started moving did Su Mu gradually become aware of the danger: Was she... being kidnapped?

Having previously been robbed, Su Mu was always on guard. Although she was well aware that she could never resist the two men in front of her by force, they hadn’t troubled her during the ride and only forbade her from calling for help. Her intuition told her that this time, it might not be Fu Shiyue’s doing.

After nearly an hour, the car finally stopped. Su Mu got out and realized they were at a private farm, a beautiful place in a remote location – perfect for murder and disposal of a body.

She turned to flee but heard a familiar voice:

"Do you think you can run faster than my people, that you can outrun my car? Without my order, not even a fly could get out of here."

Su Mu turned around and immediately saw Wei Shaoqin standing not far away.

"Wei Shaoqin, what do you mean by this? Why have you brought me here?"

Wei Shaoqin walked over to Su Mu, reaching out to lift her chin, only to be rejected as she slapped his hand away. Undeterred, he quickly caught her chin with his other hand, holding it firmly as he said:

"What am I doing? Su Mu, my patience is completely spent on you. I’m tired of playing cat and mouse with you, and today, I will make you my woman!"
