Chapter 18: Chapter 18 Don’t Die in Front of Me!
In Fu Shinian’s eyes, Su Mu at this moment seemed like a little hedgehog. He had never seen her this way before, no, actually he had seen it once, when she was on leave at home with a foot injury, talking to Junior President Wei of the Junyue Hotel.
In two years’ time, she had never revealed her true self in front of him, and now this facade was finally about to crack.
"I’ve been thinking, as the days go by, I will inevitably encounter Qin Nianwan more and more often, and it’s impossible for us to act like strangers. The only plausible way to put the old lady’s mind at ease is for you to be present as well. That way, even if the media makes a big fuss, the old lady won’t think much of it."
Su Mu looked at him incredulously:
"Fu Shinian, you can’t humiliate me like this!"
"You caused this issue, so isn’t it only right for you to step forward and solve it? How is that humiliating? Perhaps Mrs. Fu misunderstands the meaning of these words?"
"In what capacity am I supposed to appear before you? As Mrs. Fu? Could you bear to see Qin Nianwan feel wronged?"
Fu Shinian chuckled lightly:
"Of course not. If I recall, your monthly salary at Junyue Hotel is 30,000. Have you ever considered a job change? Fu Corporation just established a new ten-year film and television division, and Qin Nianwan is the only artist. How about coming over to work as an assistant? I’ll give you 100,000."
Could there be a more humiliating method than this? Even if she wasn’t regarded highly by him, she was still rightfully Mrs. Fu. To ask her to assist Fu Shinian’s ex-girlfriend, wasn’t this indirectly telling everyone he never took her seriously?
"I told you, it wasn’t me who informed the grandmother. Why won’t you believe me?"
Fu Shinian chuckled lightly, not saying a word, as if the question Su Mu asked was something he couldn’t be bothered to answer.
Su Mu knew clearly that Fu Shinian didn’t believe her, just as he didn’t believe she chose to marry him out of pure affection.
"Even if I did tell, what’s wrong with that? Even if you’re reluctant, I am still Mrs. Fu now. You’re cozying up to your ex-girlfriend outside, don’t I, as a wife, even have the right to ask?"
"Of course, Mrs. Fu can exercise the rights of a wife, but why does Qin Nianwan have the status of an ex-girlfriend? Isn’t Mrs. Fu clear about that?"
"Ultimately, you were the one who gave her up. If you had insisted on not marrying me, she wouldn’t have become an ex-girlfriend. Now you’re pushing all the blame onto me. Don’t you find it somewhat laughable?"
Fu Shinian suddenly slammed on the brakes. Su Mu, caught off guard, was thrown forward, although she didn’t hit anything, she was still quite dazed. Before she could recover, she was fiercely flung back against the seat by Fu Shinian. Glancing to the side, she saw his cold, piercing gaze:
"Back then, you blackmailed me with the old lady’s life. Did I have any other choice? Or did you expect me to just watch the old lady die? If I remember correctly, I promised to give you half of Fu Corporation’s assets, but what about you? You only had to get married. I agreed to your terms, and now you’re saying Qin Nianwan being left behind is my fault? Su Mu, you truly sit comfortably as Mrs. Fu."
Su Mu had the urge to tell him that even if he had ultimately refused her deal, she would have donated her kidney to save the grandmother at the last moment, even if it was to repay him for saving her life. But Su Mu didn’t speak, because she knew he would never believe her.
"Since you feel indebted to Qin Nianwan, why didn’t you divorce me after finding a new kidney source?"
This question plagued Su Mu. If he truly cared that much about Qin Nianwan, then why didn’t he bring up divorce after finding a new kidney source besides her? Why did he keep living with her for two years?
Fu Shinian clearly didn’t want to continue the topic and restarted the car.
The atmosphere following the conversation dropped to an icy point. Su Mu was also utterly exhausted. As the car approached an intersection, she asked to get out, but Fu Shinian turned a deaf ear. Perhaps Su Mu was pushed to her limit, or she wouldn’t have considered jumping from the car. Fu Shinian never thought she would do such a thing, so he hadn’t locked the car centrally. Noticing her action, he immediately braked, regardless of the danger, followed by a series of screeching brakes behind him.
But perhaps because Fu Shinian’s car was too expensive and the license plate too conspicuous, no one bothered to get out and curse but instead steered around.
"Are you insane! If you want to die, don’t do it in front of me!"
Su Mu scoffed coldly:
"Would you feel relieved if I died? That way, you’d be able to be with Qin Nianwan rightfully, without worrying about the grandmother’s wishes?"
Fu Shinian watched her without speaking. The next second, Su Mu got out of the car and slammed the door shut with force.
Song Yi was startled when he saw Fu Shinian appear at the company:
"Mr. Fu, weren’t you not coming in today?"
"So? Is that a problem?"
With those simple four words, Song Yi immediately sensed their boss, Mr. Fu, was in a very bad mood. Watching Fu Shinian walk into the office, he was about to return to his own post but was unexpectedly summoned by Fu Shinian into his office and told directly:
"In the next two days, don’t let any media report anything about Qin Nianwan and me."
Although Song Yi didn’t understand, he still agreed:
"Yes."
Fu Shinian wanted to say something else, but his phone rang at that moment. He looked at it with a faint sense of irritation, tossed it onto the desk, and had no intention of answering. Song Yi saw the name on the incoming call and, despite feeling uneasy, still reminded him:
"Mr. Fu..."
At this stage, it was better not to make Qin Nianwan wary.
Fu Shinian understood what Song Yi meant and, closing his eyes, he still picked up the phone. Seeing this, Song Yi silently left the office.
"Ah Nian, I’m ready. Have you booked a place?"
"There’s an emergency meeting at the company, I can’t get away, sorry."
Qin Nianwan was clearly disappointed, but she still expressed her understanding graciously:
"It’s okay, work is important. How about tonight?"
"Tonight, grandmother called and asked me to come back to the old house. I’m afraid I won’t be able to leave for a while. Just take a stroll on your own today, OK?"
"Speaking of which, I haven’t visited grandmother since after I got back."
Fu Shinian rubbed his temples tiredly: "There will always be a chance in the future."
After ending the call with Qin Nianwan, he had just settled back into his seat when the phone rang again. However, it wasn’t his own phone. He then remembered seeing Su Mu’s phone left on the passenger seat when he exited the car, which he had carelessly picked up. The name displayed on the phone was: Junior President Wei.
Fu Shinian pressed decline and then turned off the phone.
Su Mu walked aimlessly alone until her legs began to tremble and she slowly came to a stop. Her mind gradually cleared, and looking around, she realized that she had unwittingly ended up in a park. The watch on her wrist showed it was almost 1 p.m. There were few people in the park, and she sat hungrily on a bench.
Since getting married, she had never been as angry as she was today. She knew Fu Shinian had married her unwillingly, so she didn’t take his sarcastic remarks to heart on a normal day, and tried to understand things from his perspective. She thought that even if Qin Nianwan was always his first love, after two years of companionship, he couldn’t completely ignore her like a mosquito stain on the wall.
But she was wrong. Perhaps she was even less than a mosquito stain in Fu Shinian’s heart; he simply didn’t want her to appear before his eyes.
She was the one at fault. There were many ways to repay a debt, so why did she choose this self-tormenting method that made them both unhappy?
Nevertheless, Su Mu had not completely lost her reason. Remembering her grandmother’s advice, she had a simple lunch and went to the nearest shopping mall to buy herself some clothes. She then went to the supermarket and bought lots of groceries. She meant to call Fu Shinian but couldn’t find her phone anywhere, unsure if it was lost or forgotten somewhere.
In the end, having no other choice, Su Mu took a taxi to a spot about a kilometer from the old house and quietly sat on the curb, waiting.
At 4 p.m., Fu Shinian left the office and drove directly back to the old house. He didn’t entertain the thought that Su Mu wouldn’t return to the old house. When he realized he had such a thought, he was startled. What did this mean? Did he subconsciously believe that Su Mu truly cared about grandmother?
Approaching the old house, Fu Shinian saw from a distance the person sitting at the roadside, hugging one knee and drawing something with a small stone. He slowly decelerated and finally stopped in front of her. Su Mu looked up, meeting his gaze from inside the car.
Perhaps she had sat for too long, as Su Mu felt some numbness in her legs when she stood up. But she didn’t ask Fu Shinian to get out and help, instead she slowly moved the groceries to the back seat and finally sat in the passenger seat.
Once she was seated, Fu Shinian handed her the phone:
"Next time, take care of your things. I’m not always in the mood to pick up your trash for you!"
He was puzzled—despite the generous allowance he gave her each month, why her phone was still an old model from two years ago. If it weren’t for grandmother mentioning it, he wouldn’t have noticed that she wore the same few pieces of clothing over and over. Yet she always managed to combine these repetitive outfits with her own style, impressing those who saw her.
Su Mu turned on her phone, saw the missed call from Wei Shaoqin, and showed no expression before putting the phone back in her bag.
As the car entered the old house, Su Mu rubbed her cheeks with both hands and then spoke the first words after getting in the car:
"Take the things in the back seat later, otherwise grandmother will scold you again."
Fu Shinian glanced at her sideways, but the words he uttered had nothing to do with what Su Mu said:
"Why were you writing my name on the roadside?"
