Chapter 183: Sneak Attack
Chapter 183: Chapter 183: Sneak Attack
After talking for a while, Wen Shaoyuan fell into a drowsy sleep again. In fact, Su Mu was somewhat worried about how Wen Shaoyuan was sleeping so much now and what to do at night, but seeing him so overwhelmingly sleepy, she didn’t have the heart to keep him awake and stood by his side for a while. Seeing that he was sleeping soundly reassured her, and she prepared to leave.
Downstairs was very quiet, as the usually busy Auntie Li was nowhere to be seen. Just as Su Mu hesitated whether to go look for her, Chen Huifang came out of the kitchen and smiled faintly at Su Mu:
"Oh, Teacher Su is here too."
Su Mu nodded lightly in greeting: "Where is Auntie Li?"
"She went out to buy some things for the house."
The desire Su Mu had to leave was abruptly put on hold, leaving the ailing Wen Shaoyuan alone with Chen Huifang was something she could not bring herself to do.
She took a seat on the living room sofa to wait for Auntie Li to return, when Chen Huifang came over and placed a cup of water in front of Su Mu, her smile beaming, "Teacher Su, you’ve come to visit Shaoyuan despite the cold, you must be tired. Have some water."
Su Mu’s gaze lingered on the cup for a few seconds, and she smiled slightly:
"Thank you, but I’m not thirsty."
Chen Huifang’s expression stiffened momentarily, but it quickly returned to normal, so quickly that it seemed like an illusion.
Chen Huifang was unusually warm today, alarmingly so, making Su Mu feel as if she was dealing with a completely different person. She didn’t believe someone could shift their attitude so radically in just a couple of days toward someone they weren’t too fond of, Su Mu couldn’t see anything about herself that would warrant such diligence from Chen Huifang, but anomalies often signaled deception, Su Mu although unclear about her intent, became guarded nonetheless.
If Su Mu’s guess was right, there was something wrong with the cup of water before her.
About fifteen minutes later, there seemed to be a noise coming from upstairs. Worried that Wen Shaoyuan might have woken up with a problem, Su Mu got up and went upstairs, but it turned out to be a false alarm—Wen Shaoyuan was still sleeping soundly with no signs of awakening. Carefully, she closed the door behind her and did not look back, only realizing too late that there were footsteps behind her.
A heavy blow struck her from behind; she didn’t even get a chance to see who it was before she lost consciousness.
When Wen Han returned, Auntie Li was just bringing the dishes to the table and greeted him with a radiant smile:
"Back already? Get ready to wash up and have dinner."
Wen Han took off his coat and hung it up, then entered the living room and saw Chen Huifang sitting on the sofa. He showed no particular surprise, and looked directly at Auntie Li:
"Is Shaoyuan still sleeping?"
Auntie Li nodded:
"Who knows why, he sleeps so much. He wasn’t like this even when he was previously ill. But he did wake up and talked for quite a while when Teacher Su was here earlier."
Wen Han paused slightly as he headed towards the bathroom, then turned back to look at Auntie Li:
"Did Su Mu come over?"
"Yes, she stayed for a while and left after Shaoyuan fell asleep," Auntie Li said, not noticing the expression on Wen Han’s face as she smiled. "Teacher Su really cares about the young master; no wonder he likes her so much."
Wen Han was silent for several seconds before he softly responded, then resumed his walk to the restroom.
At the dinner table, Chen Huifang revisited old matters:
"Wen Han, have you really not considered what I said before? You don’t trust me with the kids at home, thinking I will harm them and even disrupt your work. Why not just give me the money and let me be gone for good? If you don’t trust me, I can draw up a written promise, guaranteeing that I will never bother you and Shaoyuan again."
It sounded good, indeed a permanent solution. If this were the first time Wen Han had heard these words from Chen Huifang’s mouth, he might have believed them and acted accordingly, but he had lost count of how many times he had heard them before.
And he no longer believed her.
Even with a written agreement, even with her repeated assurances, the moment she brought up Zhuo Qing’s name, Wen Han could not completely ignore her. After all, she was Zhuo Qing’s biological mother, she had borne Zhuo Qing, and he had promised her before Zhuo Qing’s death.
"As long as you live normally, stay away from gambling, I don’t think you need so much money," Wen Han looked up at her. "All the money I’ve given to you over the years should amount to that figure, right? But how quickly did you use it all? I’m not an ATM for you. I promised Zhuo Qing I would take good care of you, but I don’t think endlessly giving you money is really taking care of you."
Chen Huifang’s expression darkened:
"What do you mean?"
"Nothing specific. I’ve thought it over these past few days. From now on, if you want alimony, you must quit gambling and also find a legitimate job. I know it’s not easy to find a job at your age, but I can’t think of a better solution. I’ve already found you a job. You can volunteer at nursing homes and welfare institutions. Each month, you can exchange your attendance certificate for the alimony from me; otherwise, you’re on your own. I won’t give you another cent."
Wen Han watched Chen Huifang’s face grow increasingly sullen, and he smiled faintly:
"Moreover, when I’m not home, you will no longer be allowed to enter the Military Region Compound. You show no semblance of kinship towards Shaoyuan, so he doesn’t need you in his life, even if you are his grandmother."
"You..." Chen Huifang suddenly stood up from her seat, knocking her tableware to the floor. Auntie Li hurried over upon hearing the noise, but seeing Wen Han sitting calmly as if nothing happened, she figured it wasn’t anything serious.
"Wen Han, how can you justify this to Zhuo Qing? Zhuo Qing died giving birth to your child, and now you’re even driving me away. Aren’t you afraid that Zhuo Qing will come looking for you in your dreams at night?"
Wen Han slightly curled his lips:
"To be honest, Zhuo Qing never appeared in my dreams since she passed away. I wonder if it’s because the man she originally wanted to marry wasn’t me at all, so she decided not to have any ties with me even after death."
Chen Huifang’s face turned to shock. She wanted to say something but ultimately couldn’t utter a word. Wen Han quietly watched her for a few seconds, then slowly began eating. Chen Huifang watched him eat quite a bit, and her anxious heart gradually calmed down.
After dinner, as usual, Wen Han had the security guard escort Chen Huifang away. He then went upstairs to check on Wen Shaoyuan in his room, noticing that the boy’s temperature had significantly dropped and he was sleeping soundly. Although Shaoyuan hadn’t eaten much, food was always ready downstairs, so he could eat immediately when he woke up.
Wen Han then went to the gym for an hour of exercise before showering and returning to his room. While lying in bed reading, drowsiness began to set in. He glanced at the time; it was an hour earlier than his normal bedtime, but Wen Han didn’t mind. He got out of bed to check on Wen Shaoyuan again before returning to his room to rest.
