Chapter 184: Chapter 184: Joining the Game
Fu Shinian’s morning meeting did not go smoothly. What was supposed to be a two-hour session dragged on for four hours, and he was forced to rebook his flight. Now at 8:30 pm, with only 15 minutes until boarding, Fu Shinian sat in the VIP lounge trying to call Su Mu. Unexpectedly, he encountered her phone’s off signal.
His brows furrowed slightly, suddenly a bad premonition crept in. Although they rarely contacted each other by phone before, this was the first time he could not reach Su Mu.
He called the old house, and Auntie Wang answered:
"The lady left in the afternoon. It seems Miss Jiang ran into some trouble, and she probably stayed to accompany her. She called back earlier and said she would come back later."
Fu Shinian acknowledged and hung up but remained somewhat uneasy. Nevertheless, if she was with Jiang Bei, nothing should go wrong.
Song Yi, who sat nearby, noticed Fu Shinian’s expression and asked:
"Mr. Fu, what’s wrong?"
Fu Shinian shook his head, "Check the lady’s current location."
Despite the urgency, Song Yi immediately set to work, but unfortunately, with Su Mu’s phone off, they couldn’t pinpoint her location in time. They had to call Shen City’s people to check. Before boarding, there was no reply. Hearing the announcement, Song Yi spoke:
"Mr. Fu, would you like to book a flight back to Shen City, or shall we board the plane now?"
Fu Shinian fell silent for a few seconds before rising from his seat:
"To New York."
——
When Su Mu awoke, it was to a burst of exclamations. The voice was somewhat familiar, but her head throbbed so badly that she struggled to open her eyes and look for the source. Yet, what she saw was Wen Shaoyuan standing dumbstruck at the door, like a statue.
Su Mu’s response was sluggish. She couldn’t recall when Wen Shaoyuan had come back with her, nor could she remember how she had fallen asleep the night before. But since Wen Shaoyuan was standing in front of her, she must have brought him back with her.
She smiled and got up, intending to greet Wen Shaoyuan, but suddenly felt something across her waist. In an instant, she realized something was wrong. Looking again at Wen Shaoyuan, she noticed not just his expression was amiss, but also the entire setting was unfamiliar, and she...
Su Mu glanced down. While there was still some covering on her lower body, it was virtually ineffective.
"Sister Su, how... how are you here?"
Wen Shaoyuan’s words struck Su Mu like a slap, jolting her awake. She didn’t even need to check who the person was beside her; the last fragments of memory from yesterday flooded back. She had been attacked from behind, then lost consciousness.
So, what about him? Was he attacked too? There was no sensation of anything out of the ordinary on her body, so seemingly nothing had happened. Yet even so, Su Mu’s heart couldn’t accept it. No matter how absurd the truth was, the priority now was to leave before the man behind her woke up.
As she tried to send Wen Shaoyuan away so she could dress, the person behind her suddenly moved. Su Mu’s breathing stopped completely, unsure how to react.
"Su Mu?"
Wen Han’s surprise was no less than Su Mu’s, he almost sat up the moment he opened his eyes, full of incredulity. He processed what had happened at lightning speed, naturally was shocked, but he didn’t allow himself any time to react. He looked at Wen Shaoyuan:
"Shaoyuan, go out first."
Even though Wen Shaoyuan was very puzzled as to why Sister Su and his father were sleeping in the same bed, at this moment, from the looks his sister and father exchanged, he also understood that this was likely not a simple matter. Suppressing all his questions, he left the room and thoughtfully closed the door behind him.
After Wen Shaoyuan left, Wen Han quickly got out of bed to dress; then he turned his back to Su Mu, repeatedly struggling to find his voice. His fists were clenched so tightly he wished he could punch himself, but he knew that wasn’t what Su Mu needed right now.
"I... I’ll go out first, you get dressed."
Wen Han stepped out. Without any delay, Su Mu quickly found her clothes from yesterday on the sofa at the foot of the bed and dressed rapidly. Her bag was beside her, and she took out her cell phone to realize it had been turned off. She pressed the power button for a long time, lacking the courage to turn it on.
If Fu Shinian called at this time, what would she say? With what attitude should she confront him?
She and Wen Han could now completely separate as if nothing had happened, but what about the person who orchestrated all this? To toy with her and Wen Han like pawns, was it just for a fool’s laugh? Su Mu felt it certainly wouldn’t be that simple; everything was just beginning.
Eventually, she turned on her phone, not knowing whether to feel relieved or lost—there were no unread messages.
When Su Mu left the room, Wen Han was standing at the door. Hearing the sound of the door, he almost reflexively stood at attention. Although he didn’t say a word, Su Mu could see his nervousness. She stayed silent for a few seconds before speaking:
"Yesterday, I came here to see Shaoyuan. After he fell asleep, I planned to leave. At that time, Auntie Li had gone out to buy things, and Grandma was downstairs. Because I was worried, I chose to wait for Auntie Li to return. Later, I heard a noise upstairs and worried it was Shaoyuan feeling unwell, so I came up to check. As I was leaving Shaoyuan’s room, someone attacked me from behind, and after that, I don’t know what happened."
Su Mu never looked at Wen Han:
"Yesterday, Grandma’s attitude towards me changed dramatically. I have enough reason to suspect that this matter is related to her, but I know I can’t find anything out on my own, but you can. I hope you can find out the reason and give me an explanation."
Wen Han looked at the calm, coherent Su Mu in front of him, silent for a few seconds:
"Okay."
"I think they wouldn’t do these things without reason. The other party must have their motives. Perhaps they even took photos and might use them to threaten someone at an appropriate time in the future to get what they want. I can’t think of anyone who would want to harm me at the moment. If I find anything else, I’ll tell you."
"Okay."
"There’s something else," Su Mu said, "I’m sure you understand that nothing happened between us, but even so, I still feel it’s not appropriate for us to continue our acquaintance. Although I find it regrettable and know it’s not proper, I think I’m no longer suitable for the tutor position at Shaoyuan’s, and I hope you can understand."
Wen Han looked deeply at her, expecting the sadness, conflict, breakdown, fragility, and bewilderment that he thought would appear in Su Mu, none of them did. She calmly, like an outsider, told him everything she could think of, and if Wen Han hadn’t noticed her tightly clenched fists, he might really have thought she didn’t care about anything that happened last night.
