Chapter 182: Chapter 182 First Hearing of Rong Shen

Jiang Bei was clearly not convinced, snorting lightly:

"Sorry, but the education I received taught me that the first thing to do when encountering such a situation is to save people, and then to immediately call the police. Brother, that was a gunshot wound; what should I do if I don’t call the police? Are you suggesting that I should just watch someone die? I’m a doctor; that’s impossible. As for the consequences you mentioned, even if I end up being pursued and killed, what does that have to do with you? Who are you to me?"

The back-and-forth dialogue between the two made Su Mu seem to understand the reason behind it. It was all because of the patient they encountered last night. She looked at Ji Nanfeng:

"Is it really that serious? Even if I weren’t a doctor, I would know that you have to call the police in such situations. Xiaobei didn’t do anything wrong, did she?"

Ji Nanfeng snorted lightly:

"She didn’t do anything wrong, but do you know who the other person is? He’s involved in every shady business in Shen City. In other words, he’s a mobster, a big boss in the underworld. Even though I have some clout in the underworld, I still can’t match him."

Qiao Yu sighed on hearing this:

"If you were focused solely on the underworld, maybe your methods could be more ruthless than his, but now’s not the time to talk about that. Rong Shen indeed got set up by the other party over a business dealing this time, but luckily, Jiang Bei stumbled upon it and called the police. The police were frustrated with no breakthrough, and now, they’ve run straight into one. Rong Shen is probably going to take a big fall this time. His men are all fiercely loyal. If they find out that it was Jiang Bei who got him arrested, I guess..."

"What should we do?" Su Mu anxiously stood up from her seat. "Can’t we apply for police protection?"

Jiang Bei took Su Mu’s hand, comforting her:

"Susu, don’t listen to them trying to scare you. It’s not that serious; it’s just..."

"Am I scaring you?" Ji Nanfeng nearly laughed in frustration. "You won’t realize how serious it is until mobsters block your doorway and stand right in front of you, will you?"

Qiao Yu also spoke up:

"Jiang Bei, Nanfeng knows much more about this matter than we do. He wouldn’t scare you for no reason."

"Who knows if he’s saying all this just as a tactic to pursue me, having tired of using the wounded-in-action trick, and now he’s switching it up with new tactics?"

Ji Nanfeng licked his lips and looked at Jiang Bei with a smile:

"Jiang Bei, you should know, if I wanted to get you, I wouldn’t care whether you were willing or not. The reason I’ve used those tactics is simply out of respect for you. If you think it’s too slow, I can have you right now."

Su Mu frowned, but Jiang Bei just scoffed twice:

"The hell with thinking you can have me whenever you want. Even if I end up dismembered on the streets one day, I’d still owe nothing to anyone, nor would it have anything to do with you. You’d better get over the idea that I’ll ever be your woman as soon as possible. If I’d known accepting you would bring me so much trouble, I really should’ve made you impotent."

"Impotent?" Ji Nanfeng snorted. "You’d cry yourself to death then, wondering how you’d manage afterward?"

As Su Mu felt the conversation was going off topic and was about to interject, Qiao Yu already frowned and cut in:

"Enough, stop talking about these useless things. What should Jiang Bei do now?"

Qiao Yu looked toward Ji Nanfeng: "Can you arrange protection for her?"

"I can."

"No need."

The two spoke simultaneously, instantly confusing everyone. However, Jiang Bei clearly ran out of patience to stay any longer and, taking Su Mu’s hand, left Qiao Yu’s office.

Leaving Qiao Yu’s office, Su Mu’s heart still hung heavy; although Ji Nanfeng had arranged protection for her despite Jiang Bei’s wishes, if Rong Shen were really as formidable as Ji Nanfeng claimed, Su Mu did not think Ji Nanfeng’s protection would be very effective.

Seeing Su Mu’s worry, Jiang Bei comforted her:

"Don’t worry, I won’t let anything happen to myself; moreover, you might not realize who I am. I have the Wen Family backing me up; shouldn’t they think twice before making a move? Loyalty is important, but life is even more crucial, isn’t it?"

It seemed there was some truth to that, but from what Su Mu knew of Jiang Bei, she was not someone to take advantage of her connections.

"Alright, you go do your thing? I need to run to the dean’s office."

Although Su Mu wanted to accompany her, time did not allow, as it was almost time for Wen Shaoyuan to finish school. Moreover, she could not always be by Jiang Bei’s side, and even if she were, it seemed her own strength would not be of much help.

"Okay, just remember to call me if you need anything."

"Don’t worry."

Su Mu took a taxi directly to the kindergarten, but Wen Shaoyuan was not there. After asking the teacher, she found out that Wen Shaoyuan had not come to school today. Su Mu thanked her and left the kindergarten, quite puzzled. She had not received any message from Wen Han that day and had thought it was going to be a regular tutoring day, only to find out that it was not.

Su Mu called Wen Han, but the phone was switched off; she then phoned the Wen Family’s number. Auntie Li answered, informing her that Wen Shaoyuan had a fever today and hadn’t gone to kindergarten, and that Wen Han had not returned to the military but was at a meeting in the city bureau and had yet to return.

"What about grandma?" Su Mu asked. "Is she still there?"

"She hasn’t come over today."

Su Mu: "Alright, I’ll go over and check on Shaoyuan."

Upon arriving at the Wen Family’s, the guard recognized her and let her through; Auntie Li opened the door for her with a smile, "Young master was just mentioning you, hoping you would come over early. However, his dad said it wasn’t right to trouble you and mentioned that he would be back soon, so there was no need for you to come over in this cold weather to tutor."

Su Mu smiled slightly:

"It’s okay, I was idle at home anyway. Is Shaoyuan upstairs? I’ll go see him first."

"He’s there, but he might be sleeping right now."

In Wen Shaoyuan’s room, he was still sleeping heavily. Su Mu walked over and gently touched his forehead, finding it still warm. There was children’s fever medicine on the table, indicating he had taken something. Remembering the last time Wen Shaoyuan had a fever, Su Mu took off her coat and went to the bathroom, returning with a basin of water, and began to carefully cool him down physically.

When the towel touched Wen Shaoyuan’s forehead, he woke up in a daze, smiling faintly when he saw Su Mu:

"Susu..."

"Awake? Still feeling unwell?" Su Mu smiled at him: "How come just one night apart and you’re sick? Did you kick off your covers while sleeping?"

"No, I was well-behaved."

Su Mu nodded in approval:

"Then make sure to get well soon; only then can we go out and build snowmen together when it snows."

"Has it snowed?" Wen Shaoyuan suddenly sat up in bed, so excited he looked like he might run out the next second; Su Mu quickly pushed him back down, smiling, "Not yet, and even if it had, you couldn’t go out sick. So get better quickly, alright?"
