Chapter 17: Chapter 17: You Are Not Allowed to Associate with Qin Nianwan Anymore
Fu Shinian smiled and took a seat on the sofa opposite the old lady. Before he even had a chance to speak, the old lady scolded him:
"Who told you to sit down? Speak while standing."
Fu Shinian: "..."
Not daring to go against the old lady’s wishes, Fu Shinian obediently stood up from the sofa, his expression as forlorn as a wronged child. Although Su Mu felt a bit sorry for him, she was more inclined to laugh. In this state, he seemed very down-to-earth and approachable, unlike his usual cold demeanor.
"Old lady, Qin Nianwan just returned from abroad a few days ago. As a friend, I’ve been showing her around these past few days. The media took photos and I didn’t handle it in time, causing you worry."
"You still want to handle it?" The old lady glared at him. "If you hadn’t done those things, how would the media have caught wind of it? She came back from abroad to visit her birthplace, what concern is it of yours? Aren’t you overstepping your bounds as a friend? Why haven’t I seen you accompanying Susu around like this?"
Fu Shinian glanced at Su Mu, who was submissively holding on to the old lady’s hand, her lips lightly pursed, her expression looking somewhat...wronged?
"From now on, you’re not allowed to associate with Qin Nianwan!"
"Grandma..."
"If you still want to acknowledge me as your grandma, then do as I say. Otherwise, don’t bother coming through my door." For the first time, the grandmother spoke such harsh words to Fu Shinian, and even Su Mu was taken aback:
"Grandma, Shinian he..."
The grandmother glared at Su Mu:
"You naive blockhead, still defending him at this point. Don’t you know what’s going on between him and Qin Nianwan? Yet you’re so permissive about his wild behavior outside. I don’t understand you young people’s talk about respecting each other’s private spaces, but your grandfather and I have lived a life with no secrets. Susu, I’m not trying to scare you, but if you keep indulging him like this, you’ll end up crying sooner or later!"
Su Mu couldn’t help but smile bitterly at these words:
"Grandma, I’m not indulging him; I just believe that what’s mine can’t be taken by others, and what’s not mine, won’t stay even if forced."
Fu Shinian watched Su Mu, thinking that she really did have a talent for acting. At least at this moment, even he almost believed what she said.
The old lady was probably also tired, having said what she needed to say to Fu Shinian, trusting that he would not do anything inappropriate in the future. She then waved her hand:
"You’re not going anywhere today. Take Susu to the mall for a stroll. I’ve noticed that it’s been a long time since she wore anything new; she’s been too frugal. On your way back, stop by the supermarket and get some groceries. Have Auntie Wang cook something nice for dinner."
"Grandma, I have a meeting waiting for me at the company, I really don’t have time today."
The old lady rose from the sofa, and Su Mu also stood up, intending to help her back to her room to rest. But the old lady didn’t seem ready to leave right away. She looked at Fu Shinian with dissatisfaction:
"Would the company collapse if you didn’t chair a single meeting? You have time to accompany that woman Qin Nianwan, but when it comes to your own wife, you say you’re busy with the company. If your grandfather knew about your conduct now, he wouldn’t be as easygoing as I am! I’ve made myself clear today; whether you follow through is for you to decide."
Fu Shinian had never seen his grandma truly angry with him before. Worried about her health, he had no choice but to give in:
"I’ll listen to you, I’ll listen to everything you say. I will call Song Yi right away and won’t return to the office today."
The old lady didn’t say any more and turned to walk towards her room. Su Mu followed:
"Grandma, let me escort you."
Helping the grandmother sit down on the bed, Su Mu crouched down to take off her shoes and said softly:
"Grandma, there’s no need for you to be angry."
"It’s Shinian who is behaving inappropriately. You’ve always indulged him, so I have to step in. You married into the Fu family without asking for anything, which was already a grievance. I can’t just watch that boy bully you and pretend nothing is happening. I know it’s hard for you, and I haven’t been too harsh, but if my granddaughter were to suffer like this, it would break my heart."
Su Mu fell silent for a moment before slowly saying, "Actually, Miss Qin and Shinian were a loving couple back in the day. It was my appearance that..."
"Even if it hadn’t been for you, I would never have let Qin Nianwan step through the Fu family’s doors."
Surprised, Su Mu looked up at the old lady. The old lady gently stroked her hair and smiled slightly:
"I’m not lying or deceiving you, grandma."
"Why?"
The old lady simply smiled, not saying anything more, and patted her hand: "Go shop with Shinian. Don’t save for him, buy whatever you like."
Knowing that the old lady didn’t want to talk about it, Su Mu didn’t press further, and just smiled: "Then I’ll come back later to keep you company, grandma."
When she left the room, Fu Shinian was nowhere to be seen. Su Mu searched around and finally, it was Auntie Wang who told her with a smile, "Young master is out on the lawn playing with the dog."
After thanking her, Su Mu stepped outside. From a distance, she saw Fu Shinian with his back to her, on the phone, and An Le joyfully running around him, wagging its tail. When Auntie Wang had picked up the barely alive An Le from the streets, she gave it the name, hoping that while it brought peace and joy, it would also bless the Fu family residence.
In the distance, Su Mu could faintly hear him issuing work instructions. As she hesitated about whether approaching him would be disruptive, An Le spotted her and bolted towards her with delight, drawing Shinian’s gaze as well. He watched her playfully tangle with An Le and then ended the call softly:
"Let’s leave it at that for now; we’ll stay in touch if there’s anything."
Su Mu squatted halfway down, and An Le approached her face, licking her face incessantly with its tongue. Su Mu was so amused that she laughed until she noticed Fu Shinian approaching, watching her intently; only then did she slightly restrain herself and stood up.
She gathered the stray hair by her ear that An Le had tousled:
"If there’s business at the company, you should go. I won’t let Grandma find out, and I will prepare the goods for you. As long as we come back and have dinner together in the evening, that will be fine."
Fu Shinian stared at her and snorted lightly:
"Do you think I would believe you?"
With that one sentence, Su Mu understood. She looked up at Fu Shinian:
"You think I told Grandma about today’s matter?"
"The old lady never reads entertainment newspapers. If not you, who else would have the heart to do it? Su Mu, if you have any complaints, you can tell me directly. The old lady is in poor health. Is it necessary to bring these troubles before her and let her worry?" Fu Shinian’s voice grew colder, "I used to think that, at the very least, you were somewhat sincere towards Grandma, but now it seems, the entire Fu family is just a tool you can use."
"I didn’t do it, the matter with you and Qin Nianwan wasn’t told to Grandma by me."
"Is that so? Then can you tell me how the old lady learned about these things?"
Su Mu closed her eyes weakly:
"I don’t know."
These past few days she had always been busy with work, and it had been a very long time since she had visited the old mansion to see Grandma. How could she have known about these things? But in any case, shouldn’t these issues not be blamed on her? Who exactly was the real culprit? Didn’t he truly not understand?
"If you don’t want Grandma to know about your affairs outside, then let the company’s public relations handle your news well. As long as the media doesn’t release it, who would know what you did outside?"
Fu Shinian narrowed his eyes slightly:
"Are you complaining?"
Su Mu let out a light laugh: "No, I just think that if you really care about Grandma, instead of hoping for others to manage, you’d be better off doing fewer things that cause her to worry."
After saying this, Su Mu walked towards the entrance of the old mansion. Fu Shinian quickly walked a few steps to block her path:
"If you leave now, will you complain to Grandma in the next second, saying that I disobeyed her instructions and left you alone? Su Mu, I won’t let you have your way."
Su Mu could not remember how long it had been since she and Fu Shinian had gone out together; it seemed like it had never happened at all. She was the Mrs. Fu who need not be known by the public, nor did she need to accompany him to any events. They only interacted at home, on that one bed, but even those rare interactions had not taken place for quite some time.
The interior of the car was so quiet it felt almost eerie, neither of them thinking to speak.
Su Mu sat in the passenger seat, her head leaning against the car window, watching the scenery flash by and tried to make herself as invisible as possible.
The moment the ringtone of the mobile phone rang, Su Mu blinked, realizing it wasn’t her phone, she didn’t move. Fu Shinian glanced at the caller ID and took the call directly through the car’s Bluetooth. The moment the other party’s voice echoed inside the car, Su Mu couldn’t help but shiver:
"Ah Nian, what are you doing?"
"Driving, what’s up?"
"Will I disturb you? Should I call you back later?"
"No need." Fu Shinian responded indifferently, "Speak."
"Actually, it’s nothing important. I was just wondering if you are free at noon. You’ve taken me to so many places we used to go together these past few days; I want to treat you to a meal to show my gratitude."
At the red light, Fu Shinian stopped the car at the intersection:
"We don’t need to talk about these things between us."
Su Mu lowered the car window, and the rolling heat from outside surged in, making her feel like she could finally breathe a little. Fu Shinian glanced at her with a heavy gaze.
"So do you have time at noon or not?"
"Fine, I’ll have Song Yi arrange the place."
The phone call finally ended, but Su Mu did not feel that her breathing had become any easier. She felt like a pair of hands were grasping her heart tightly, suffocatingly, painfully, as if at any moment they could stop its beating. She wanted to escape this space, but the traffic light changed, and Fu Shinian had already restarted the engine.
Su Mu looked ahead and spoke, "Just drop me off at the intersection ahead."
"The old lady asked me to accompany you well today, and I’ve agreed to it."
Upon hearing this, Su Mu laughed and looked at the ever-calm Fu Shinian as if he had no idea how the phone call just now had made her feel:
"Having both of your women accompany you for a meal, does that whet your appetite?"
