Chapter 16: Chapter 16 Resignation

Su Mu saw such a careless boss for the first time, who clearly owned the business, yet insisted on sabotaging it.

She avoided Wei Shaoqin’s gaze and walked passed him to turn off the stereo. In that moment, she felt as if the whole world had quieted down, and she had never before felt such comfort in silence.

The frenzied crowd, due to the abrupt halt of the music, gradually stopped and started complaining at the culprit, Su Mu:

"Who are you to turn off our music?"

"Exactly, who do you think you are? You don’t even look around to see whose turf this is..."

"Junior President Wei, is this one of your romantic debts from outsider?"

...

Su Mu ignored their teasing and walked directly to Wei Shaoqin:

"Does Junior President Wei think he has earned enough money?"

"There are troubles of that nature, unfortunately, someone has to spend the money, and that someone is reluctant."

"Maybe it’s not that the money is bad, but the person who has the money is uncomfortable to look at."

Wei Shaoqin slightly narrowed his eyes:

"This is my private party, Manager Su is not on my guest list, please do not disturb us."

"I wouldn’t normally comment on Junior President Wei socializing with friends, but I am standing here hoping you would consider the hotel guests a bit. If you feel you no longer need to earn money, then I will go inform the reception to cancel all bookings and not accept any guests. However, for those who have already checked in, we cannot just kick them out. We still need to prioritize the guests’ needs and requests."

Wei Shaoqin downed the red wine in his glass, then stood up and walked towards Su Mu:

"When guests have complaints during their stay, isn’t it the duty of the housekeeping department to address and soothe them?"

Su Mu met his gaze: "I am dealing with it."

"You are in the wrong room, I am not dissatisfied, and you shouldn’t be soothing me."

"How can I satisfy the guests if I don’t deal with you, the source of the problem?"

"A housekeeping manager who can’t even meet the guests’ most basic demands seems unfit for her position."

At this moment, Su Mu somewhat understood. It wasn’t because he had too much money, but because he wanted her to compromise and become his woman. Wei Shaoqin was vastly underestimating her if he thought a mere job could blackmail her, considering the years she had struggled in society.

"I understand what Junior President Wei means."

Wei Shaoqin slightly raised his eyebrows: "Not too late."

Su Mu lowered her eyes and took off her work badge from her chest, handing it to Wei Shaoqin: "With a boss like you, my career won’t have much of a future. Rather than regret not changing jobs sooner, it’s better to leave on good terms now."

Wei Shaoqin glanced at the badge bearing Su Mu’s name and smiled faintly:

"Are you suggesting you could have a better future at another company?"

"Junior President Wei wouldn’t do something low as to prevent me from finding a job, right?"

"Forgot to tell you." Wei Shaoqin took her badge and casually threw it into a nearby trash can: "I’ve never been a good man. I don’t mind using any means necessary to achieve my goals."

Su Mu never expected to end over a year’s work in this manner. She returned to her office to pack up her personal items, then wrote a resignation letter. She intended to personally deliver it to Li Cong’s office, but unexpectedly, he came to find her first.

"Manager Su, isn’t your decision a bit too impulsive?"

"President Li, I have no other choice." Even if she didn’t resign today, Wei Shaoqin would find another way to force her to leave tomorrow. Rather than let this hotel become bedlam, it was better to leave sooner and enjoy some peace.

Li Cong hesitated to speak, but seeing Su Mu’s resolute demeanor, he couldn’t help but speak up:

"I can see Junior President Wei’s intentions toward you, but aren’t all rich people like that? You don’t have to go against him like this. Just humble yourself a little, please him in appearance, and it will pass. Why go to this extent? Do you think it’s just about quitting Junyue Hotel? What if Junior President Wei uses some means when you try to find another job? Have you thought about your mother?"

Su Mu paused for a moment, but her decision remained unchanged:

"I’ll find other ways. I don’t believe he can cover the sky with one hand in Shen City."

"He doesn’t need to cover the entire sky, just enough to cover yours. In business circles, it is better to have one more friend than to make an enemy. Who would want to offend Junior President Wei just to hire you? You are being naive."

As they spoke, Su Mu had finished packing her things. She looked at Li Cong and smiled faintly:

"President Li, everyone has different bottom lines. If Junior President Wei simply admired me and wanted to be friends, I would be happy to. But you know very well, he wants more than that."

"Su Su, even if you don’t consider yourself, think about..."

"President Li," Su Mu interrupted him, "If my mother knew I sold myself for her sake, she would hate herself deeply."

Su Mu did not go home, but went directly to the internet cafe next to the office to start submitting resumes. Her education was quite impressive, and she had a good major, so as long as Wei Shaoqin did not create trouble, finding a suitable job soon would not be difficult, although she faintly felt that it might not go so smoothly.

At 6 p.m., Su Mu returned home, and while Auntie Lin was busy in the kitchen, she placed the items she had brought home from the office into her bedroom. She did not want Auntie Lin to see them because then Fu Shinian would quickly learn about it.

Su Mu went downstairs for dinner, Auntie Lin had already set the table, and Su Mu sat down:

"Is Sir not coming back?"

Auntie Lin smiled awkwardly, "I called Sir earlier, and he said he would not be coming back recently and also told me to take good care of you."

Su Mu believed the first half but not the latter. It was probably Auntie Lin’s way of comforting her, but did she already look so pitiful that even the maid had to fabricate lies to make her feel better?

Fu Shinian had been absent for several days, Su Mu had called him, but he did not answer. She called Song Yi, who only mentioned he was busy, but what he was busy with, he did not say. Eventually, Su Mu stopped asking because the news media would inform her eventually.

Fu Shinian, never before mentioned on the entertainment pages, became a constant feature on the front page headlines these days. Su Mu couldn’t help but notice. She tried her best to ignore everything and focus on job-hunting, but after a week, the resumes she sent out seemed to have sunk to the bottom of the sea without a trace.

Because she was prepared, Su Mu was not too disappointed, nor did she give up, but that day, as she was about to leave the house to look for work, she suddenly received a call from her grandmother asking her to return to the old house.

When Su Mu arrived at the old house, a familiar car was parked in the yard; it had only been a week since she last saw it, yet it seemed like ages had passed.

In the living room, her grandmother looked unwell, while Fu Shinian stood to one side, his face eager to please, resembling a child who had made a mistake and was seeking forgiveness from a parent.

Seeing Su Mu, her grandmother smiled, quickly beckoning her to sit down by her side:

"How come you’ve lost so much weight in just a few days? And you’ve gotten quite a tan too."

Su Mu smiled, taking her grandmother’s arm:

"Grandma, I haven’t lost weight, it’s just that this black dress makes me look slimmer than usual."

This was the first time Fu Shinian had looked at her since she entered, and grandma was right; she had indeed lost some weight. Her usually slim waist appeared even more slender, and her skin tone had darkened several shades. He wondered what she had been doing these past days, coming here to pretend to be pitiful?

Her grandmother admonished her a few times, forbidding her from dieting to lose weight, to which Su Mu responded each time, and only then did her grandmother smile contentedly. However, her expression turned gloomy again as she looked at Fu Shinian, who could not help feeling wronged:

"Old lady, since I entered, you haven’t smiled at me once."

"If I had the strength, I would have already hit you, and you expect me to smile at you? How shameless can you be?"

Fu Shinian: "..."

Su Mu glanced at Fu Shinian, who only showed this pitiful look in front of his grandmother, making one unable to resist the urge to pat his head.

"Grandma." Su Mu spoke up, "Shinian rarely comes back. Please don’t be so harsh on him."

Grandma snorted coldly:

"You know he rarely comes back, but is the reason for his rarity due to being too busy at work, or because of some other trivial matters?"

Su Mu understood; her grandmother had called them both back today because of the recent scandals about Fu Shinian. She wanted to speak up for Fu Shinian but was immediately interrupted by her grandmother:

"Don’t cover for him. I have already asked the small Lin at Bishui Yuntian, and she said that this boy hasn’t been home for a week. Why didn’t you tell me? Just letting him mess around outside!"

"Grandma, it’s not like that," Su Mu looked somewhat anxious, "It’s not like that. Shinian has been very busy with work recently, coming home very late and leaving early in the morning when it’s still dark, so Auntie Lin doesn’t know."

Grandmother looked at Su Mu uncertainly:

"Are you not lying to grandma?"

"No, how could I lie to grandma?"

Grandma looked at Fu Shinian, "You tell me, is it as Su Su said?"

Fu Shinian smiled:

"Old lady, Su Mu and I sleep in the same bed. She said that there’s someone with her every night. If it’s not me, who else could it be?"

The old lady was clearly reluctant to believe it, but since Su Mu had said so, she didn’t want to expose her lie and make her feel embarrassed, but she meant to take a good look into matters outside Bishui Yuntian:

"What’s the deal with Qin Nianwan? When did she come back? How did you get involved with her again?!"
