Chapter 15: Chapter 15 Who is the woman by your side?

In the restroom, Qiao Yu leaned against the door watching Ji Nanfeng use the toilet. Ji Nanfeng had the urge to shove his head into the urinal, but out of the many years of camaraderie, he ultimately refrained from doing so.

"Tell me honestly, after all these years of not having a girlfriend, do you have a thing for me?"

Qiao Yu: "...Am I sick?"

"Then why are you staring at me so intently while I’m taking a piss?"

Qiao Yu gave him a fierce glare, then turned around and left.

By the sink, Ji Nanfeng glanced thoughtfully at Qiao Yu and began to wash his hands leisurely, "What were you up to before you came here? What’s got you so absent-minded?"

"I went to see off Su Mu."

Ji Nanfeng: "..."

"Nanfeng, you’ve always had a sharp eye for people, so tell me, what’s the deal with those two inside?"

"What do you mean ’what’s the deal’?"

"I mean Shinian and Qin Nianwan. Do they still have a chance?"

After washing his hands, Ji Nanfeng casually grabbed a piece of paper towel and dried his hands, still not responding to Qiao Yu’s question. Qiao Yu thought he was contemplating, but upon lifting his eyes and noticing his expression, he realized Ji Nanfeng hadn’t taken his words seriously at all, prompting Qiao Yu to click his tongue:

"Did you even hear what I said."

"I heard you. I’m not deaf." After tossing the tissue into the nearby trashcan, Ji Nanfeng lit a cigarette for himself and looked up at Qiao Yu, "Do you really fancy Su Mu?"

Caught off guard, Qiao Yu: "What kind of thought process is that?"

"If it’s not because you fancy Su Mu, why else would you, who usually couldn’t care less about worldly affairs, be so concerned about Shinian’s love life? According to your past behavior, no matter who Shinian chooses, you would appear indifferent, because after all, it’s not your wife."

Unable to help it, Qiao Yu rolled his eyes:

"Even if I’m not human, I know that’s my brother’s wife, and I wouldn’t think of it. In fact, I know whether it’s Su Mu or Qin Nianwan, that’s Shinian’s own business. Maybe because I’ve dealt more with Su Mu these past two years, I feel that compared to Qin Nianwan, Su Mu is more suitable for Shinian."

"Only the person wearing the shoes knows if they fit. Why do you bother meddling?" Ji Nanfeng exhaled a puff of smoke, "Stop dithering like a woman, just go back."

"Ji Nanfeng, you asshole!"

Before even sitting down after returning to the private room, Fu Shinian’s phone started to ring. It was placed on the table, so Qin Nianwan, sitting next to him, saw the name flashing on the screen—Su Mu.

After glancing over, Fu Shinian picked it up and pressed the answer button:

"Hello?"

Su Mu hadn’t expected Fu Shinian to pick up her call, much less with such swiftness. She was taken aback for a moment, and the words she intended to say seemed to vanish, leaving only an awkward silence.

Hearing no response from Su Mu, Fu Shinian pulled the phone away from his ear for a look, then said:

"Speak."

Snapping back to reality, Su Mu’s voice still contained a hint of panic:

"I was just wondering, what time will you be home?"

"I won’t be coming home tonight, no need to wait for me."

What Su Mu said on the other end was unknown to Qin Nianwan, but she heard Fu Shinian’s response loud and clear. Perhaps it was his lukewarm attitude towards Su Mu that gave Qin Nianwan confidence. She stood up to serve a bowl of soup for Fu Shinian and placed it in front of him:

"Ah Nian, this soup is really delicious, give it a try."

Although Su Mu knew who Fu Shinian was dining with today, knowing was one thing, and hearing Qin Nianwan’s voice was another. She knew very well that asking would only humiliate herself, yet she still asked:

"I hear a woman’s voice beside you, who is it?"

This was the most righteous inquiry a wife could make, yet Su Mu’s question was tinged with caution. In contrast, Fu Shinian seemed hardly moved, replying indifferently:

"I have other matters to attend to, hanging up now."

Having ended the call, Fu Shinian stated outright:

"I’ve just discussed with Nianwan, and she’s interested in a career in the entertainment industry."

"That’s easy enough," Ji Nanfeng chimed in, "My company is one of the top film and television companies in the country. Let Nianwan join my company, and I’ll assign her the best agent to ensure overnight fame."

Qin Nianwan was just about to thank Ji Nanfeng when Fu Shinian beat her to it, but no one expected his response to be a rejection:

"No need."

Ji Nanfeng was somewhat confused and looked at him, "What do you mean by that?"

"Your company is indeed not bad, and you have a lot of artists. Even if you assign the best agent to Nianwan, there will still be some competition for resources. Besides, if you give all the best to a newcomer like her, you are undoubtedly inviting jealousy for her, so don’t bother arranging these things."

Qin Nianwan had originally wanted to join Ji Nanfeng’s company, which after all, is the entertainment kingdom that everyone in the industry dreams of. However, she didn’t expect Fu Shinian would refuse on her behalf. In that moment, she didn’t quite understand what Fu Shinian really meant.

Fu Shinian glanced at her and offered a comforting smile,

"I am going to set up an agency just for you, responsible only for you."

Upon hearing this, not only Qin Nianwan but also Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu were startled, especially Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu, who exchanged glances. However, neither could understand what Fu Shinian truly meant.

After the meal, Fu Shinian drove Qin Nianwan back to the hotel. However, at the hotel entrance, Fu Shinian showed no intention of getting out of the car. Qin Nianwan turned to look at him,

"Won’t you come up for a while?"

Fu Shinian looked at her and chuckled lightly, "Is that the same thing I’m thinking?"

"I just saw you drank quite a bit tonight and wanted you to come up for some tea." Although she put it that way, Qin Nianwan’s eyes were conveying a different meaning as she looked at Fu Shinian.

Seeing that Fu Shinian didn’t speak, only looking at her, she became more direct,

"You just said on the phone that you wouldn’t be going home, and I thought you were going to stay."

Fu Shinian chuckled softly,

"I may not consider myself a good man, but I can’t let you be mistreated as ’the other woman.’ Take it easy, there will be a day when I’ll stay."

Her words were undoubtedly an implicit promise, and Qin Nianwan didn’t insist any further, smiling faintly,

"What about tomorrow..."

"I have time these next few days. There have been some notable changes in Shen City since you left, and I’ll take you to see."

Su Mu almost didn’t sleep all night, and the next day her mental state was pretty bad. But she was well aware that it had nothing to do with rest, it was completely because her whole mentality was focused on Fu Shinian and Qin Nianwan. He hadn’t come back all night; they probably were together, right?

Who knows?

Su Mu hadn’t forgotten about the sanatorium. She called Jiang Bei first thing in the morning, stating her purpose. Jiang Bei was silent on the other end of the phone for a few seconds,

"Su Mu, I really hate to call you my friend. How did I even get to know someone as dense as you? You’re rightfully Mrs. Fu, and even if you haven’t given Fu Shinian much, the fact that he’s holding on to your husband’s title means you have every right to spend his money. Why are you trying to save it for him?"

"You know I’m not trying to save this money."

"Of course, I know. But have Shinian’s actions over the past two years not crushed your pride and self-esteem thoroughly enough? Does he care? All he did was save your life once, and you were so grateful that you wanted to donate a kidney for his grandmother—although in the end, it wasn’t necessary, your intention was genuine, wasn’t it? Even if he wasn’t touched, he should at least remember that favor. But look at what he’s done to you these past two years!"

Su Mu didn’t speak; Jiang Bei’s words made her recall that cold, hopeless rainy night when she was hit by a car, unable to move, and instead of helping her, the driver was trying to overrun her to death. In her fearful desperation, she begged for mercy, and at last, heaven took pity on her—a car rushed from another end of the crossroad and knocked the other car away just in time.

The person who saved her was Fu Shinian; she saw his signature on the hospital billing statement and had kept that receipt to this day.

Only, he never knew about it; the incident that night was just a good deed done in passing for him, but in Su Mu’s life, it was a stroke laid in thick, vivid ink.

"Xiaobei," Su Mu said softly, "If he hadn’t saved me that year, I wouldn’t be alive today."

"I’d rather you had died back then than live now without any sense of self!"

Jiang Bei knew she had spoken too harshly and regretted it as soon as the words came out. After a few seconds, she finally compromised, "I’ll transfer the money to you later."

To avoid being late, Su Mu went to the sanatorium without breakfast, and after paying the fees, she hurried to the company without even a glimpse of her mother. Before she could enter her office, her assistant intercepted her,

"Sister Mu, you’re finally here; I was about to worry myself to death."

"What happened?"

"Since last night, we’ve had non-stop complaints from guests, and it hasn’t stopped yet."

Su Mu furrowed her brows, "For what reason?"

"Noise."

"Noise? Where is it coming from?"

The assistant didn’t quite know how to put it, "You better go take a look for yourself."

Not wanting to delay, Su Mu went straight to the floor mentioned by her assistant. Before she even entered the problematic room, deafening music reached her ears. The hotel had chosen premium soundproofing materials during renovation to enhance guests’ stay, but even so, Su Mu could still feel the ground vibrating beneath her feet.

Approaching room 1717, Su Mu used her card to enter the room directly. She had a reason not to knock; she figured that with such noise, if the people inside could hear her knocking, they would be no ordinary humans but divine creatures with exceptional hearing.

As she expected, the room was as ridiculous as she had imagined, a whirlwind of colors and lights like a nightclub, and amidst the blaring music, men and women were dancing chaotically. Wei Shaoqin was sitting on the living room sofa like the most honored emperor, seemingly anticipating her arrival and was now holding a glass of wine, looking at her with a smirk.
