Chapter 157: Chapter 157: Lip Wound, Proof of Good Relationship
Both of their clothes were wet, and in front of the old lady, Su Mu could not say that she wouldn’t change or that she wouldn’t allow Fu Shinian to go upstairs. She prayed that Fu Shinian would speak up, after all, that would have seemed more normal, but he didn’t say a word from beginning to end, standing there composed, as if he was waiting for Su Mu to make a move.
If they stayed any longer, the old lady might start to suspect something. Su Mu had no choice but to ascend the stairs. When she heard Fu Shinian’s footsteps behind her, her heartbeat inexplicably began to quicken. However, she then thought to herself that she actually had nothing to be nervous about.
In the master bedroom, Su Mu first entered the walk-in closet. She had thought that Fu Shinian would conscientiously wait for her in the bedroom, but as it turned out, he had no such intention and followed her right in. Su Mu couldn’t really say anything, after all, this was his territory.
Just as she was about to turn around and leave the walk-in closet to him, Fu Shinian slowly spoke up. He said their first words in more than twenty days,
"If you don’t want to see me, why bother coming back?"
Su Mu stopped in her tracks, her back to Fu Shinian, and she didn’t speak for a long time, until Fu Shinian gave up on choosing clothes, walked over, and stood in front of Su Mu. Seeing her head bowed and gaze lowered, he couldn’t help but reach out and gently lift her chin, forcing her to look at him.
The moment their eyes met, Su Mu slightly tilted her head to avoid his fingertips, but she still refused to speak and tried to get around him. Unexpectedly, she was directly caught by Fu Shinian and pinned between the wardrobe and his chest. She tried to push him away but didn’t have the strength to do so; he was nearly immovable.
Su Mu gave up struggling and didn’t look at him, speaking indifferently,
"You know why I came back. Do you have to make things even uglier?"
"For the old lady?" Fu Shinian looked at her, so close he could even see the capillaries beneath her skin. He wanted to reach out and touch her, but he knew she wouldn’t like it, "If it’s to avoid raising the old lady’s suspicions, then when you’re pretending, do it more convincingly. Not saying a word to me, not even daring to glance at me, do you think the old lady is blind?"
Su Mu knew what he said was true, so she didn’t retort.
Just now downstairs, she indeed had the attitude Fu Shinian described. Before coming, she thought she could do it, just like every other time, no matter what conflict she had with Fu Shinian, in front of Grandmother, they always seemed harmonious.
But this time, she could feel the poor quality of her own acting.
Su Mu looked up to meet Fu Shinian’s gaze,
"So, you’re saying I shouldn’t have come back, right?"
"If you’re going to act like this, then you really might as well not have come back."
Su Mu curled the corners of her lips, although it was only a slight movement, for her at that moment, it was very difficult, "Then I will find an excuse to leave later."
Fu Shinian clenched his teeth,
"Are you relying on the old lady liking you, so you want to make things difficult for me? What does it count for if you leave now? Did I bully you?"
Upon hearing this, Su Mu let out a light laugh:
"Perhaps to Mr. Fu, everything that happened half a month ago can be treated as if it never happened?"
Fu Shinian frowned slightly, but his grip on Su Mu loosened a great deal. After all, he still felt guilty.
Seizing the opportunity, Su Mu freed herself from his hold and headed for the door.
When Fu Shinian came out of the walk-in closet after changing his clothes, Su Mu was nowhere to be found in the room. However, it was impossible for her to have left straight down the stairs. That left only one possibility: she was hiding in the bathroom. He felt an urge to burst in and drag her out, but he ultimately gave up and left the room directly.
The sound of the room door opening and closing reached Su Mu standing in the bathroom. She let out a quiet sigh of relief and looked at her reflection in the mirror, feeling inexplicably disheartened.
She wasn’t the one who had done anything wrong, so why was she the one hiding? Why couldn’t she face him directly? After all, she had never done anything to wrong him—it should be him feeling guilty.
But the truth was, she couldn’t stay as calm as she wanted to.
After changing clothes and preparing to go downstairs, she opened the door only to find that Fu Shinian had never left. He was casually leaning against the opposite wall, smoking. Hearing her, he glanced up slightly. His expression, amidst the swirling smoke, was rebelliously cool.
Caught off guard by this situation, the mental preparation she had done inside the room did help, to some extent. At least now, seeing him again, she didn’t feel the same urge to flee. However, she still didn’t want to speak to him.
As she moved towards the stairs, he stopped her just as he had done earlier in the walk-in closet, trapping her between the wall and himself. The smell of nicotine was even stronger, causing Su Mu to frown in displeasure. Just as she opened her mouth to speak, he didn’t give her the chance and leaned down abruptly.
What was their status at this moment?
Su Mu never expected him to make such a move. Before she could react, he had already stood up and left. The pain on her lips made her frown slightly, and she glared at the culprit, but he showed no signs of remorse. Instead, there was a trace of smugness in his eyes and he said:
"It took us so long to change, don’t you think Grandma might suspect that we were fighting in the room? This wound proves otherwise—that our relationship is very good."
He made a logical point, but Su Mu’s chest burned with an unnamed anger.
Why? Why could he be so nonchalant about everything that happened? It was as if she was the only one overreacting, as if from the beginning to the end, only she was fussing over things. And he, the one controlling everything, looked like an outsider—who watched her cry, watched her laugh, watched her walk away helplessly, watched her act out her difficulties.
He must be very pleased, right? To have someone who willingly let herself be manipulated by him.
Some fires can’t be quenched once ignited, and this is especially true for someone as stubborn yet compliant as Su Mu. When she doesn’t flare up, she’s still as dead water. But when she does, it’s as if the sky were falling and the earth splitting, like at this very moment. Almost reflexively, she slapped Fu Shinian with a loud smack.
He turned his head from the impact, seemingly caught off guard. A few seconds later, he slowly turned back, his tongue touching the cheek that had been hit, his gaze becoming sharp. But Su Mu wasn’t afraid, perhaps because after going through what she had feared before, Fu Shinian now seemed insignificant by comparison.
Meeting Fu Shinian’s gaze, she smiled softly:
"Fu Shinian, just who do you think you are?!"
