Chapter 158: Chapter 158: I’ve Been in Love with You for a Full Seven Years
In my world, people come and go, never caring about the feelings of others. When you were happy, you dangled hope for our marriage in front of me like teasing a pet. When you were unhappy, you could torture me at will, mentally and physically. As long as you wished, there was nothing you couldn’t do.
But I too am human, all I hoped for was for my unrequited love to bloom and bear fruit. You just took advantage of my feelings for you.
But what if I don’t love you anymore?
Who do you think you are?
Fu Shinian had been staring at Su Mu without speaking, and Su Mu met his gaze without flinching. It was as if time had frozen in that moment—neither backing down, nor calling a halt—until the ringtone of Su Mu’s phone broke the standoff, and she was the first to exit the confrontation.
Jiang Bei’s voice came through the phone:
"Susu, how is it going? Have you met? Did he bully you?"
With exhaustion, Su Mu let out a sigh:
"Don’t worry, I’m fine."
"Really? But your voice doesn’t sound very happy?"
Su Mu was about to say something when Jiang Bei’s phone was snatched away by Wei Shaoqin, the two of them had gotten together again at some point:
"Su Mu, are you unhappy? Do you want me to come pick you up? It’s just a family banquet, and you’ve made an appearance. Mrs. Fu’s suspicions should be clear by now, right? Why don’t you find an excuse to come out, and I’ll take you for some good food? Don’t you love that barbecue place? I’ll go with Jiang Bei to pick you up, how about we have a good drink?"
Jiang Bei cursed him on the other end: "Are you out of your mind? With Su Mu in such a condition, what’s with drinking? Do you want her to die?"
This quarrel was all borne out of concern for Su Mu, making it hard for her not to feel the warmth enveloping her; she smiled slightly:
"I’ll be back in the afternoon, and we can go eat together in the evening."
"Can’t you really come back now?" Wei Shaoqin was worried: "I feel Fu Shinian has no good intentions towards you."
Before Su Mu could utter words of reassurance, her phone was snatched away by Fu Shinian. With a cold, emotionless voice, he spoke into the phone:
"Junior President Wei, even if I have no good intentions towards Su Mu, she is still my wife. This is a family matter, and it’s none of your business to interject."
After he said that, without caring about what kind of roaring might be coming from Wei Shaoqin on the other end, he hung up the phone. Facing Su Mu’s dissatisfied look, he returned the phone to her, but just as Su Mu thought he was going to say something to her, he turned and left, heading straight to the study.
Su Mu watched his back for a few seconds, put away her phone, and walked downstairs. To the queries of the elderly Mrs. Fu, Su Mu merely said that he had to deal with some sudden work matters. Mrs. Fu didn’t pay it much mind, focusing all her attention on Su Mu’s injured and swollen lips, her gaze growing ambiguous.
Su Mu was at a loss for words.
At lunchtime, there was no sign of Fu Shinian coming down. Su Shiyue looked at Su Mu with a gentle smile:
"Sister-in-law, won’t you go check on my brother?"
Su Mu looked at Su Shiyue, feeling a sense of estrangement—not because of not seeing each other for a long time, but because of her change. The old her, even if only to consider Mrs. Fu, would speak to Su Mu with hidden barbs. Now, even if her attitude was impeccable to a fault, making anyone believe they got along harmoniously, Su Mu felt a chilling sensation creeping up her spine.
Looking at Su Shiyue, then at Mrs. Fu who seemed to share the same sentiment, Su Mu had no choice but to head upstairs.
The study door was tightly closed. Su Mu stood at the door without hesitation and knocked firmly. She only entered after a deep voice from inside beckoned her in.
Fu Shinian sat behind the desk, an ice pack in his hand pressed against the marks on his face. Hearing the sound, he lifted his gaze and saw Su Mu, letting out a light chuckle:
"Here to check on the fruit of your labor?"
Su Mu couldn’t be bothered with his mockery, "Time to eat."
"Does Mrs. Fu think I can show this face in front of the old lady right now?"
Su Mu hadn’t thought about all this when she slapped him. All she felt was that he deserved it and simply raised her hand. Yet she completely ignored the place and even more so, today was the old lady’s birthday. He had to face the old lady eventually. But what’s done is done, and bringing it up now was entirely pointless.
If given another chance, Su Mu thought she would still hit him.
Because he truly deserved it.
"Then I’ll just tell grandma you’re busy," she said.
"Too busy to even come downstairs for grandma’s birthday? Su Shiyue has rushed back from England, and I can’t even go downstairs?" Fu Shinian stared at her coldly, "Su Mu, are you doing this on purpose?"
Su Mu stood at the door, didn’t enter, didn’t speak, and didn’t avoid Fu Shinian’s gaze. She looked at him with eyes so calm they held no concerns:
"Fu Shinian, shouldn’t we consider ending this?"
Fu Shinian hadn’t been as angry when he was slapped as he was at this moment. Upon hearing Su Mu’s words, he got up from his seat and strode toward Su Mu. He thought she would flee, but she just stood there, not dodging at all, letting him bear down on her:
"Su Mu, what right do you have to talk about ending it?"
Su Mu looked at him:
"If it hurts your male ego to hear those words from my mouth, you can pretend I never said them and let it be you who says it."
"You’re the one who wanted to get married, and now you’re telling me it’s over? What makes you think you can control my marriage like this?"
Su Mu pressed her lips together, realizing some issues probably shouldn’t be discussed today. But there never seemed to be a right time between her and Fu Shinian. With that thought, she didn’t care much anymore, and with a slight smile, she began:
"Fu Shinian, you never liked me, did you?"
Fu Shinian opened his mouth as if to say something, but ultimately, no sound came out.
"But I liked you." Su Mu gazed at him, "Whether you believe it or not, I have been fond of you since 7 years ago."
Seven years ago? Something important flashed through Fu Shinian’s mind, but he couldn’t grasp it clearly. He could only look at Su Mu, letting her speak.
"On August 21st, 7 years ago, I was hit by a car on my way home from school. The driver didn’t take me to the hospital, but out of fear I would become a lifelong burden to him, he reversed the car, intending to repeatedly roll over me until I died. It was you, driving from the other end of the crossroad, who fiercely crashed into that car, saving my life."
"From that day on, I’ve liked you, right up until now."
The impact of Su Mu’s words was too great for Fu Shinian, not because it was unbelievable, but because he could find no memory related to the accident, no matter how much he searched his brain. He was certain he had not saved anyone 7 years ago.
So why did Su Mu say it was himself? She took the initiative to approach him, willing to donate a kidney to grandma, to marry him; was her purpose really just to repay a debt?
