Chapter 156: Su Shiyue Returns to the Country
Chapter 156: Chapter 156: Su Shiyue Returns to the Country
Just as he reached the entrance hall, the sounds of laughter and cheerful conversations from inside the house reached his ears. Su Mu paused for a moment, and so did Fu Shinian, but neither said anything. They changed their shoes and stepped inside, and, as expected, they saw Su Shiyue, who should have been overseas, sitting in a wicker chair by the floor-to-ceiling window.
Seeing Fu Shinian may have made her feel somewhat guilty, as Su Shiyue’s smile instantly stiffened. She stood behind her grandmother, meekly saying in a low voice:
"Brother, sister-in-law."
Fu Shinian frowned; he didn’t want to see Su Shiyue at this time at all, but now that she had returned, it wasn’t a good time to say anything. He simply glanced indifferently at Song Yi, who realized his own neglect. Someone from England was always supposed to keep an eye on Su Shiyue and Song Yi was to be informed of any updates immediately. But now that he thought about it, there hadn’t been any news for a week, and he had overlooked it.
He bowed his head slightly to acknowledge his fault:
"It was my oversight."
Fu Shinian responded lightly, rare for him not to be angry:
"Book her a ticket for the day after tomorrow."
"There’s no need." Song Yi was about to agree when he was cut off by Su Shiyue, who had overheard the conversation and spoke softly to Fu Shinian: "I’ve already booked my own ticket, for the morning the day after tomorrow. I really came back just to celebrate Grandma’s birthday, nothing else."
The old lady’s happiness was more important than anything else. Even if Fu Shinian wanted to be angry, now was not the time. He looked at Su Shiyue without saying anything more and, alongside Su Mu, walked over to sit opposite the old lady.
Su Mu handed over the paper bag she was holding, her face full of smiles:
"Grandma, I know you lack nothing and don’t need our gifts, but since it’s your birthday, a present is needed to make it festive. So, I knitted a scarf myself, choosing only the finest materials, it’s warm and cozy. Do you like it?"
Fu Shinian glanced at her upon hearing this; he had no idea that Su Mu could engage in such handicrafts.
The old lady apparently didn’t expect it either, as she almost immediately took the scarf out of the paper bag and held it in her hands carefully, not wanting to let go:
"I had no idea Susu was so skillful with her hands, even able to knit?"
Su Mu was shy from the praise:
"I learned from my mom when I was little, and haven’t knitted in a long time. Grandma, I hope you won’t find it lacking."
"What are you talking about, I like it so much there’s no time to do anything but appreciate it. The color and the material are to my liking, it’s thoughtful of you. You never ask me what I like, but every time the gifts you give me hit me right in the feels. You truly are considerate."
Su Shiyue seemed much more behaved than usual, typically at this time she would surely have some sarcastic or undermining comment, but this time she quietly sat beside the old lady without saying a word, looking obedient and compliant throughout.
There was still some time before dinner, so Su Mu kept the old lady company with conversation. Fu Shinian took a work-related call and stood at a distance, watching this scene unfold, feeling an inexplicable sense of peace in his heart.
It had been a long time since he had seen Su Mu, nearly 20 days now. Qiao Yu hadn’t lied; she indeed seemed to be recovering well. Although she hadn’t regained the weight she lost, her complexion appeared much better.
If it weren’t for the old lady’s birthday, Fu Shinian wasn’t sure when he would have been able to see her again. Qiao Yu had gone to see her and had told her about his gastric bleeding, yet she hadn’t shown up. She seemed to have changed from before, at least she used to prioritize anything related to him.
The sound of the mobile phone ringing interrupted Fu Shinian’s thoughts. He looked down at it, his brow slightly furrowing, and after a moment he answered:
"What’s the matter?"
Qin Nianwan was silent for a few seconds on the other end of the phone:
"I heard that today is Grandma’s birthday, and I wanted to come by to wish her well."
If it had been according to the original plan, Fu Shinian would certainly have brought Qin Nianwan over for the old lady’s birthday, but after everything that happened, Fu Shinian would not do so. With Su Shiyue already being an unexpected turn of events, he could not bring another complication by involving Qin Nianwan.
"There’s no need, I will convey the message for you."
"But..." Qin Nianwan seemed troubled: "I am already outside."
Fu Shinian, however, did not soften his heart:
"Go back. Grandmother is in a good mood today, I don’t want to dampen her spirits."
Having said that, he did not give Qin Nianwan a chance to explain and hung up the phone directly.
Su Shiyue, who had just finished washing the fruit, was passing by the kitchen and caught these words, pausing slightly:
"Brother, was it Sister Nianwan?"
Fu Shinian turned around to look at her, his gaze carrying a subtle inquisitiveness:
"Did you notify her?"
Fu Shinian did not believe that Qin Nianwan would remember Grandmother’s birthday.
Su Shiyue nodded slightly:
"Before I came back, I made a call to Sister Nianwan and told her why I was returning, but I didn’t ask her to come. Maybe, she really just wanted to express her birthday wishes to Grandma?"
Fu Shinian did not speak, and Su Shiyue noted that his expression seemed unchanged. She cautiously suggested, "Since she has already come, even if we don’t let her join the birthday banquet, we should at least go out to meet her, shouldn’t we? If it’s inconvenient for you, I can do it. It would at least be courteous."
Su Shiyue was indeed different from before. In the past, how could she have understood these nuances, let alone consider others’ feelings? Most likely she would have brought Qin Nianwan back without permission, but this time, she actually knew to think from the perspective of others.
Had she truly grown up, or had someone helped her?
Fu Shinian really could not make a definite judgment.
"Brother?" Seeing that Fu Shinian had not responded, Su Shiyue gently reminded him, "If you don’t agree, I’ll just go and deliver the fruit to Grandma and Sister-in-law."
Fu Shinian faintly smiled:
"There’s nothing to disagree with. Since you think it’s necessary, then go ahead."
Su Shiyue smiled and nodded:
"Alright, I’ll deliver the fruit first."
Fu Shinian stopped her:
"I can take it over."
Su Shiyue handed the fruit to Fu Shinian and then left the room.
As Fu Shinian came to Grandmother and Su Mu’s side and placed the fruit on the round table, Su Mu happened to be reaching for a teacup. Their hands naturally touched, a completely normal occurrence, but Su Mu instinctively flinched, and soon a cup of water dropped to the floor, shattering, soaking most of their pants.
Grandmother hurriedly pulled Su Mu away, looking at her anxiously:
"Did you get scalded? How could you be so careless?"
Su Mu forced a smile, "It’s nothing. I just lost my grip, I’m sorry, Grandmother."
Lost her grip? Fu Shinian stood aside, scoffing inwardly, but he, of course, could not expose her.
"What’s there to apologize for? It’s just a cup. Today’s New Year’s Day, it’s symbolic of year-round safety. Don’t stand around here, go upstairs and change your clothes." Turning to Fu Shinian, she said: "Yours are wet too, go with Susu."
