Chapter 154 Conspiracy
Chapter 154: Chapter 154 Conspiracy
Su Mu had returned to the old house; she hadn’t been back for a while because she was worried about running into Fu Shinian. Now that she knew he was in the hospital, she wanted to come back and check in, mainly because she feared that her grandmother would worry if she was away for too long.
Winter had arrived, and the old lady had become sluggish and reluctant to move. She spent all day indoors. When she saw Su Mu enter the room, her eyes crinkled into a smile. It wasn’t until Su Mu approached and took her hand that she sobered up:
"How many days has it been since I’ve seen you? Why have you lost so much weight? Is it that boy Shinian bullying you again? Don’t be afraid, tell Grandma, and I’ll take care of it for you."
Su Mu shook her head with a smile and helped her grandmother sit down on the wicker chair in the sunroom:
"No, I’ve been having some discomfort in my stomach recently, so I haven’t been able to eat much. The doctor has prescribed some medicine, and I’m being treated. It’s nothing serious."
"What are we going to do? You and Shinian are so young; how come you both have gastric problems?" The old lady remembered something as she spoke: "Why hasn’t Shinian come with you? He said the other day when he was here that you weren’t feeling well and didn’t want to go out. I thought he was lying to me, but now it seems to be true."
"He’s on a business trip."
The old lady looked at Su Mu, "Really?"
Su Mu felt a bit guilty, but fortunately, at that moment, the telephone rang and interrupted their conversation. Auntie Wang brought over the cordless phone and handed it to the old lady:
"It’s Mr. Fu’s call."
The old lady took the phone with a beaming smile and held it to her ear:
"How come you thought to call Grandma... On a business trip? Are you really? ... Susu is here. I thought you were bullying her again... I won’t speak for you, you’ll have to tell Susu yourself."
After saying this, the old lady handed the phone to Su Mu. Su Mu looked at the phone, caught in a dilemma, but eventually took it. After all, the old lady’s penetrating gaze made it easy to read the truth in her expression. As she was getting older, she really shouldn’t have to worry about the younger generation’s troubles any longer.
Su Mu stood quietly by the window with the phone, calm on the outside, but only she knew the turmoil beneath that serene facade.
Turns out, she still couldn’t calm down.
There was silence on the other end of the line with Fu Shinian as well, but he didn’t hang up. Su Mu didn’t know if he truly had something to say, so she just waited in silence. After a while, she found the wait overly long. She looked at the phone, which was still connected, and pressed the end call button a few seconds later.
In the end, they hadn’t exchanged a single word.
——
Before leaving work, Qiao Yu went to see Fu Shinian and found him sitting up in bed, staring blankly at his phone:
"What’s wrong?"
Hearing Qiao Yu, Fu Shinian snapped back to reality, and his gaze fell on him, "Have you been to see Su Mu?"
Qiao Yu paused briefly in his action of sitting down because of what Fu Shinian had said. He hadn’t told anyone about his visit, after all, not wanting to hurt a man’s fragile ego; now, although he didn’t know how Fu Shinian had found out, there wasn’t a reason to deny it.
He nodded and sat down, "Yes, I did go. I went yesterday. How did you know?"
"Su Mu is at the old house."
Upon hearing this, Qiao Yu understood as well. One of the hardest parts about their argument was probably how to keep it from Grandma. Su Mu probably had been avoiding going back to the old house for fear of bumping into Fu Shinian. Now going back there probably meant she was sure Fu Shinian would not appear.
Although Jiang Bei knew about his hospitalization, Fu Shinian thought she wouldn’t tell Su Mu. She would probably be delighted if Su Mu divorced him, and the people around him, apart from Song Yi who might be a possibility, was Qiao Yu. But Song Yi had been busy with company affairs these past days, being open and honest in front of him, so it probably wasn’t him.
The only one left was Qiao Yu.
Qiao Yu looked at Fu Shinian and smiled faintly:
"Based on what I know about you, you should be throwing a tantrum right now. What is it? Too sick to have the energy?"
Fu Shinian snorted lightly:
"Maybe you should try again when I am better."
"Then you’d better get well soon." Qiao Yu glanced at the IV in Fu Shinian’s hand, and after a few seconds of silence, "Don’t you want to ask about Su Mu’s situation?"
"I can guess. If things were bad, I wouldn’t have been able to leave the emergency department and come to the ward unharmed."
Qiao Yu nodded in agreement, "Indeed, Jiang Bei’s few words scared Song Yi into sweating bullets."
Fu Shinian said nothing more, but Qiao Yu knew he didn’t want to bring up Su Mu, not because he didn’t care, but because he didn’t know what to say. He sighed softly:
"No matter what, Su Mu’s feelings for Grandma are beyond words. Theoretically, it’s your grandmother, and you’ve been so harsh to Su Mu. Even if she never returned to the family mansion to visit, it would be understandable, but she insists on going back. Why do you think that is?"
Fu Shinian looked at him calmly:
"What are you trying to say?"
"I’m asking you, do you think Su Mu is genuinely filial to this extent to any elder? Or is it because of someone?"
——
After visiting her grandmother, Su Mu started venturing out of the Glass House frequently. It wasn’t for anything else; she began scouting locations for her studio. However, after several days, she hadn’t found a suitable place. Soon it was New Year’s Day, which also marked the grandmother’s birthday.
The grandmother, perhaps worried Su Mu wouldn’t return, had called two days in advance, asking her to come back one day early and stay a few more days at home. Through Jiang Bei, Su Mu knew that Fu Shinian had been discharged, so she could anticipate running into him. But she couldn’t miss the grandmother’s birthday, so she could only plan to leave early and not stay overnight at the family mansion.
Jiang Bei frowned slightly when she heard about this:
"Why do I feel like this thing seems like a conspiracy?"
"Conspiracy?" Su Mu looked at her puzzled, "What conspiracy?"
"I can’t put my finger on it, but it just feels odd, didn’t you say the old lady always told you young people should live your own lives? No matter how much she likes you, she never actively asked you to stay at the family mansion. Yet this time, she’s saying to stay for a few days."
Su Mu didn’t think much of it, perhaps as people age, they feel increasingly lonely, especially now in winter, and the old lady not willing to move around indoors, she probably just wanted some company,
"It shouldn’t be."
Based on Su Mu’s understanding of Fu Shinian, he wouldn’t stoop to such actions. He wasn’t that concerned about her, nor did he want to worry the grandmother.
"Even if I’m overthinking it, you’ll have to meet Fu Shinian that day. Do you want me to accompany you? I’m worried he will bully you again."
Su Mu shook her head:
"It won’t happen, the grandmother doesn’t like to make a fuss on her birthday, she prefers simplicity. Plus, with Grandma there, he won’t do anything to me. He cares about this more than I do."
Jiang Bei was still worried:
"Then I’ll call you in the evening saying there is something urgent, to get you out of there."
"Okay."
