Chapter 246: Chapter 246: I Think Daddy Has Fallen For You

Chantelle’s eyes narrowed as she glanced at Daniel, who was now focused on driving.

"What happened to him?" she quickly replied.

"I think Daddy has fallen for you!" Kane typed quickly.

"Why do you think that?" Chantelle replied.

"He got really scared when I said I’d go back to Carcosa. He even shouted at me."

Chantelle shook her head and sent back a message, "Don’t run off like that again. Your daddy gets worried, and it’ll only make him more upset."

"Don’t worry, Mommy. I won’t make Daddy sad. Because when he’s sad... you end up getting hurt too."

Chantelle couldn’t hold back her laughter. Kane really was the sweetest kid.

Daniel kept glancing at her. She was smiling at her phone, typing happily. He felt a strange feelings of jealousy.

Every time she was on her phone, he couldn’t help but think she was talking to another man.

"Daniel, if you want to die so badly, do it alone!"

Chantelle shouted as she noticed a car speeding toward them from the right. Daniel wasn’t even paying attention. He stared blankly ahead, like he wasn’t there.

She quickly grabbed the steering wheel and turned it just in time to avoid the crash.

Daniel felt cold sweat form on his forehead. He swore to himself he wouldn’t lose focus like that again.

"If something’s bothering you, just talk to me," Chantelle said. "And if you can’t, talk to Philip instead. Don’t bottle things up. You’ll scare my son like that."

"I’m not hiding anything from you..." Daniel started, but he didn’t know how to explain it.

Chantelle brushed him off with a wave. "We’ve never been the kind of couple who share things deeply. It’s fine if you don’t want to open up. Don’t force yourself."

Suddenly, Daniel jerked the steering wheel to the side and stopped the car by the road. Then, he turned to her and stared at her with cold, piercing eyes.

"If we’re not an intimate couple, does that mean you’re close with someone else?" Daniel said coldly.

"I’m close with a lot of people, actually," Chantelle shot back, clearly offended by his tone.

"Oh yeah? So how many dads does Kane have, then?"

"You bastard!" Chantelle shouted. She threw the door open and stepped out of the car, slamming it shut behind her.

Her anger surged. She stood on the side of the road, fists clenched. Then, her tears began to fall.

She had really believed Daniel meant it when he confessed his feelings to her. She thought he had changed.

But now, it felt like he still saw her as the same woman from six years ago and someone without pride. Someone he could insult whenever he wanted.

It felt like all his sweet words were just empty lines for Kane’s sake, not hers.

When Daniel saw Chantelle step out of the car, panic hit him. He rushed after her.

"Chantelle, that’s not what I meant. Please, believe me!"

"I don’t care what you meant," she hissed. "Don’t ever say things like that to me again." She shook off his hand and walked over to wait for a taxi by the side of the road.

"I was just jealous," Daniel admitted in a small voice. "I hate myself for not being there these past six years. I hate that someone else was by your side when I wasn’t."

He looked at her, eyes filled with pain.

"I can’t stand the thought of you smiling at another man. It drives me crazy. But I didn’t dare ask who it was... because I was scared he might really be real."

"I know I don’t have the right to ask about what happened these past six years. But my mind won’t stop. I can’t stop feeling jealous. Chantelle, I’m scared I’ll lose you."

Daniel stared at her. His eyes burned with emotion like she was the only thing that mattered. It was the kind of look that could melt any woman’s heart.

Chantelle had always been tough and distant. But now, she felt herself starting to soften. Still, she couldn’t bring herself to return his love.

Every time she tried to let her guard down, worry and fear would take over. It happened whenever Daniel tried to get close and show her how much he loved her.

Maybe she was just too scared of being hurt. That fear always pushed her to pull away. It made her want to run from him every single time.

Daniel felt a distance between them that he couldn’t explain. It tore at him inside. Still, he knew he couldn’t force her.

This was the result of what he had done before. He needed to make things right, step by step.

"I’m not saying all this to pressure you or make you feel like you have to respond. I just don’t want you to get the wrong idea."

"I understand."

They both went silent. Just then, Chantelle caught a light, sweet scent coming from Daniel. It smelled like milk.

Chantelle leaned in a bit, trying to figure out the scent. Then she looked up and saw Daniel’s eyes. Her heart beat faster as she said, "You smell like something familiar."

She let out a small cough and took a step back.

Daniel sniffed his sleeve and realized the light, milky scent must’ve come from Stephanie.

He thought about telling Chantelle that Stephanie was back, but suddenly remembered Stephanie told him to keep it a secret at the hotel.

After thinking it through, he decided to surprise Chantelle in two days instead.

"Calling for Daddy!"

A familiar ringtone cut through the silence. Daniel and Chantelle were both stunned.

They both gasped, then rushed back to the car. Daniel quickly started the engine.

He connected his phone to the car’s Bluetooth, and the call came through.

A child’s voice came through the line.

"Daddy, you’ll lose your precious son in the next three hours."

"Kane, don’t loiter."

"Tell Mommy that her precious son is mad. Big consequences are coming."

Kane ended the call, clearly proud of himself.

Chantelle looked at her phone, which was now flooded with messages. She quickly sent Kane a string of apologetic emojis.

A moment later, he replied: "Your son is very angry. He won’t be answering messages for the next three hours. Try again later."

"I beg you, tell me where you’re going, my handsome Kane."

"That’s top secret."
