Chapter 208: Stay Away From Him
Chapter 208: Chapter 208: Stay Away From Him
Meanwhile, Chantelle was already on her way back to the city in Daniel’s car.
She quickly told Calvin to pull back and she sat in the cold, tense atmosphere inside the car.
Since Daniel had led her out through the secret passage, he hadn’t said a word.
Even though he was still holding her hand tightly, Chantelle could feel he was upset.
The awkward silence made her uncomfortable.
"Daniel, why were you at the castle?" she finally asked.
"To find you," he answered.
"Erm, I just thought the castle looked interesting, so I went there to check it," Chantelle said, trying to lighten the mood.
"You think I’ll believe that?" Daniel asked coldly.
"Well, I actually suspected Joseph had something to do with Grandpa’s death. So I went to check it out. But it looks like Joseph found out about my plan early. My effort was wasted."
The castle was empty, and Kate was full of lies trying to protect Joseph.
It was clear the whole thing was set up to trap her.
"Chantie, I know you want to find the truth about Grandpa’s death but Joseph is a dangerous man. Please stay away from him." Daniel said with his voice still gentle even though he was upset.
"Daniel, why aren’t you surprised?" Chantelle furrowed her eyebrow.
"Hmm?" Daniel briefly gave a light hum.
"I said I suspect Joseph is connected to Grandpa’s death. Why do you look like it’s not news to you? Like..."
"You already knew, didn’t you?" Chantelle’s eyes widened as she quickly realized it.
It made sense. With Daniel’s skills, he would have investigated Joseph the moment he arrived in Easthan.
Daniel’s expression was hard to read. He fell silent for a while before speaking.
"I have my suspicions too, but I haven’t found any solid proof yet. I’ll keep looking into it."
"Then I’m going with you!" Chantelle said without a second thought.
"No. Like I said, he’s too dangerous. I don’t want you to get hurt."
"Well, I don’t want you to get hurt either. Two people are better than one!" she argued immediately.
Chantelle was determined to prove she meant it.
She worried Daniel was hiding the investigation from her just to protect her.
Her small face turned red as a heavy anxiety filled her heart.
Daniel was stunned for a moment when he heard her words.
He then looked at her and suddenly laughed.
His eyes, which were gloomy before, now sparkled like stars.
He reached out and gently pinched her flushed cheeks.
"So, you actually care about me, huh?" He was obviously teasing her.
"No, I didn’t. You’re seeing it wrong."
After a moment, Chantelle realized what happened. Her cheeks turned even redder, and she quickly looked away from him.
"Yes, you did. I heard it."
"No, I didn’t."
"Alright, alright. You didn’t."
"I did!" Chantelle kept arguing but then noticed something felt off.
"Well, my wife said it herself. Noted on that," Daniel said, looking pleased.
"Ah, that was embarrassing," Chantelle muttered.
Ashton, who was driving, felt the same awkwardness.
It seemed like Mr. and Mrs. Wilson’s relationship was getting better. But their brains didn’t seem as sharp as their kids’... Oops, did I just spill a secret?
Yeah, he really shouldn’t be in the car, ruining their romantic moment.
"Just admit you’re worried about me. We agreed before that if you’re going after Grandpa’s enemies, I’m coming with you!" Chantelle said seriously.
"Fine, but I have one condition."
"What is it?"
"You can’t do anything dangerous."
"...."
"If you can’t agree, Chantie, then let’s just drop it," Daniel insisted.
"Deal!" She quickly agreed to his proposal.
"Joseph is extremely dangerous. Can you promise to stay away from him from now on?"
"Well..." How did their conversation end up back at this topic?
It seemed like there was more to the story between them.
Chantelle became curious.
"Of course, I’ll stay away from him. But I should know why, right? Why don’t you tell me what happened between you two?"
"You really want to know?"
"Yes."
"I can’t explain it clearly right now. How about I tell you a bedtime story tonight?" Daniel said as he suddenly pulled Chantelle into his arms.
"Huh?" Chantelle blinked, a little confused as Daniel suddenly pulled her into his arms.
But she quickly realized Daniel was teasing her.
"Since it’s a family secret, it’s best to talk about it in bed," he added with a grin.
"Daniel."
"I’m serious."
"Don’t be such a shameless guy."
Ashton silently agreed in his heart.
Right now, he wished he were deaf.
Why did he have to suffer hearing all these conversations?

Roman’s Apartment.
Roman had just been released from the police station. He looked messy.
His clothes were ripped and stained. His hair had thinned out from stress.
Kingsley helped him sit on the couch and tried to get him some water. But there was no clean drinking water left in the house.
Roman hadn’t said a word since he got back. He just stared into space, like he wasn’t even there. Kingsley found it alarming.
"Sir, you can’t go on like this. The Bently Family still needs you," Kingsley said, trying to encourage Roman.
"It’s over. Everything’s over. The Bently Family is done," Roman said with a blank face like he felt nothing at all.
"Sir, it’s not the end yet. There’s still time. Let’s try to find another way."
"What way? Just the first phase of the Shallow Bay project needs at least five hundred million. Where am I supposed to get that kind of money?" Roman leaned back on the couch, feeling like everything was falling apart.
"Kingsley, leave me. Go find someone else to serve."
He knew deep down that Kingsley was more loyal than his own wife and kids. That’s why he didn’t want to drag him down too.
The Bently Family’s problem had nothing to do with Kingsley.
As a trained butler, he could easily find another job.
That was what Roman really thought. Maybe he didn’t even realize he still had a kind heart deep down.
"Sir, I’m not leaving. I’ve been with you through everything for so many years. We’ll find a way!" Kingsley said as he dropped to his knees, tears in his eyes.
He had grown up with no home. It was the Bently Family who accepted him.
He had served Roman since they were kids. His whole life was about repaying him.
That’s why he wasn’t leaving.
He had to help Roman.
