Chapter 169: Chapter 169: You Said You’d Repay Me
"What do you mean you can’t go? And... why are you wearing my bracelet?" Chantelle’s heart sank the moment she saw it on his wrist.
"Lone Wolf changed the bracelet. It’s now the timer for the bomb. Chantelle, please listen... we don’t have much time," Daniel spoke gently, trying to calm her down. He explained everything with patience, hoping she would understand.
But as soon as she heard his words, anger rose inside her.
"No way! Why do you always have to play the hero? It’s just a bomb. I’ll handle it!"
Stupid Daniel. Does he think it’s cool to strap a bomb to himself?
That thing is real. It could kill both of us in minutes!
"Chantelle..."
"Shut up! I’m going to take care of this bomb, and we’re both going to live. If not, then we die together. What’s wrong with you? Do you think you have to save everyone? I’m not letting you risk your life for me!" Chantelle shut him down and began examining the bomb on his body.
She was panicking. Her hands were shaking as she tried to defuse the bomb.
Time was almost running out.
"Chantelle, Lone Wolf is after me. I just want you to live," Daniel said as he watched her busy hands. His chest felt warm seeing how hard she was trying.
But the seconds kept slipping away.
If Chantelle didn’t leave now, it would be too late.
He reached out and held Chantelle’s trembling hands, trying to get her to leave.
"Daniel, don’t you know I want you to live too?"
Before he could say anything, she looked up at him with teary eyes.
"You said you’d repay me. Then why are you doing this? You liar! I never should’ve trusted you!"
She yelled at him and her voice was full of pain, but her hands didn’t stop working on the bomb.
When she lived abroad, she trained with Little Thirteen on how to defuse bombs.
But she had never done it for real. And this one was even trickier—it had been altered with her bracelet. She didn’t know how to handle it, and that made her even more nervous.
Daniel was stunned by her words. It took him a moment to respond.
"Chantelle, do you forgive me?"
"That depends. If we die here, I’m going to haunt you as a ghost!"
"Alright then, I’ll take that as a yes," Daniel said with a grin.
Chantelle ignored him and reached for the black gauze wrapped around his body with her unsteady hands.
The gauze wasn’t large, but it clearly held explosives.
They didn’t know how powerful the blast could be.
Chantelle couldn’t figure out how to stop it. She was already thinking of how to weaken the explosion to keep him alive.
Lone Wolf was unpredictable.
She knew better than to take the bomb lightly, even if it looked small.
What should I do?
She was on the verge of breaking down.
Three minutes left...
"Daniel, doesn’t your family have lots of agents and bodyguards? Weren’t they trained to handle bombs?"
"Yes, of course."
"Hurry up and tell me what you know!"
"This bomb looks messy, but it’s actually the latest txt850 from the dark market. It’s small and easy to hide, but the blast is ten times stronger than a regular one. When the timer hits zero, this whole building will be gone."
Daniel sat on the floor and explained the plain-looking bomb.
It was built to be flexible and could be set off by a timer. Once it started, there was no way to stop it.
But he didn’t tell her that part.
This bomb even had a name called "Regretless."
Chantelle felt a chill run down her spine.
"Why would you wear it if you knew how dangerous it was? Are you an idiot?"
"I know, right? I really do look like an idiot in front of you."
"Chantelle, please. Just go. Get out while there’s still time. Live for the children, okay?"
"Then you listen to me too. We still have two minutes. Don’t give up now. You haven’t even met Stephanie yet. She’s got a terrible temper. Even the Little Devil, Kane, is scared of her. If she finds out I died, she’d probably dig up my body just to make me finish her bedtime story..."
"Stephanie?"
"Yes, don’t you know you have a daughter?"
"Daughter? What? You said I have a daughter? What else are you hiding from me?"
Daniel was completely stunned by what she said.
Chantelle Bently, this sneaky woman! If I weren’t about to die, who knows how long she would’ve kept this from me?
"Want to know how much I’ve really kept from you?"
"Of course."
"If we escape here alive, I’ll tell you everything."
"Promise?"
"Yes, I promise!" Chantelle nodded desperately.
Daniel looked at her and smiled.
Two minutes left.
It was clear Chantelle wasn’t going to leave him behind.
"Chantelle, do you trust me?"
"No, I don’t trust men," she replied with a sharp tone.
She kept her head down. Her body shook uncontrollably.
Even though she kept telling Daniel not to give up, deep down, she knew the bomb couldn’t be stopped.
"I’ll take that as a yes!" Daniel suddenly shoved Chantelle aside and sprinted toward the exit.
Chantelle froze for a moment, then realized what he was trying to do. "Daniel, damn it!"
How could he leave her behind to die alone?
"Beep, beep beep..."
The timer on the digital bracelet started beeping. One minute left.
Daniel ran as fast as he could toward the staircase and the exit.
Chantelle refused to leave, so he took the bomb away from her.
He wanted her to live, even if she ended up hating him forever.
"Daniel Wilson!"
Chantelle struggled to get up and ran after him.
Just before she reached the staircase, a loud bang echoed through the air. The building shook violently.
The shock knocked her off balance, and she tumbled down the stairs.
When everything stopped, she stayed still. Her heart felt like it had shattered.
The bomb had already exploded.
Is he... dead?
Chantelle lay on the floor. The light in her eyes faded.
No words could describe how broken she felt.
The ceiling lights flickered, then went out—just like her world.
As she sank deeper into the darkness, drowning in hopelessness, a soft and sweet voice echoed in her ears.
"Mommy, mommy, I’m here to save you!"
Her eyes flew open.
