Chapter 148: Coming For Dinner?
Chapter 148: Chapter 148: Coming For Dinner?
Meanwhile, Ruby had convinced Roman to let her join the live broadcast tomorrow night, so she was staying home tonight.
She called James while Roman was in the shower.
Lately, James had gotten used to her affection and flirtation. So when she said she wanted to stay at the Bently home, he quietly rented a service apartment in the same building.
He only texted her after he moved in.
Ruby frowned when she read the message.
James had been getting out of hand. She told him to stay where he was, but he didn’t listen.
If Roman found out about James, it would be a disaster.
Back when the Bentlys still had power, her title as Mrs. Bently gave her status. She wasn’t going to throw all that away for one man.
She decided to call him.
"Chantelle is back, James. The Bentlys might turn things around. We can’t afford any mistakes. Please, just go back."
She said gently, trying to persuade him down with soft words.
"Are you pushing me away, Ruby? Do you still have to keep serving Roman at night?"
"What are you talking about? He hasn’t touched me in ages. How could he ever compare to you? I’m just telling you to go home for now. I’ll come see you in two days when things calm down."
She spoke in a playful, scolding tone.
"But I’ve already prepared everything. Come over after he falls asleep. I’ll be waiting."
He hung up before she could say no.
"James... Hello?"
Ruby still had more to say, but before she could continue, her phone was suddenly taken from her.
"Who were you talking to? Isn’t it a bit cold to be standing out here on the balcony so late?" Roman came out of the shower with just a towel around his waist. His damp body leaned against hers as he pushed her down onto the soft sofa.
"R-Roman..." Ruby shyly tried to pull away and looked for a chance to stand, but Roman pushed her back onto the sofa.
He ignored her protests and didn’t hold back.
He had been powerless for a long time, but now that things were finally getting better, his body became vigorous. It was the perfect time to prove himself.
He tossed her phone aside. In the process, he stepped on it and accidentally called James.
James assumed Ruby was calling to sweet-talk him, but as soon as he picked up, he heard something else—two people in the middle of something intimate.
His face twisted angrily.
Impotent? He didn’t sound like it at all.
Disgusting.
James was fuming. Furious, he jumped in his car and sped to Roman’s apartment. He pounded on the door with everything he had.
Inside, Roman was in the middle of enjoying himself when the loud banging startled him.
"Who the fuck is knocking at my door in the middle of the night?" he shouted.
No one replied.
He tried to go back to what he was doing, but another loud knock followed. Now he was pissed. Wrapping a towel around himself, he stormed to the door and flung it open—only to find no one there.
"You coward! Just wait till I catch you!" he yelled before slamming the door shut.
Before Roman could return to what he was doing, the knocking came back but this time it was louder and more aggressive than before.
His mood was ruined. Frustrated, he gave up and went back to shower.
Ruby found the knocks strange, but her worry quickly shifted to guilt. Fear crept in at the thought of James showing up and confronting Roman directly.
The whole incident made one thing clear to her. James was getting out of control.
She couldn’t keep him around any longer.
She quickly got up, grabbed her phone, and sent James a message.
"Was that you at the door, James? Perfect timing. Roman almost got me. Thanks for saving me! I’ll come to your place soon."
James had been destroying everything around him in anger. Her message finally calmed him down.
"He didn’t do anything to you?"
"He’s not in the mood anymore!"
"That’s good. You’re mine, Ruby. No one else can touch you!"
"I know. Just make sure Roman doesn’t catch you."
"Got it."
"By the way, any news about Kate? Did you look into that number?"
That was the answer Ruby wanted most.
Once her daughter was found, James would no longer be of use to her.
"I’m still looking into it. I’ll tell you if I find anything."
"You’re the only one I can count on for this, James. Don’t fail me."
"I’ll take care of it. It’s late—get some rest. I’m heading back now."
James finally stopped pressuring Ruby to join him. He checked out of the service apartment and returned to his mansion.
Feeling satisfied, Ruby put her phone away. Since it was still early and she had no plans to deal with Roman, she got dressed and drove to Chantelle’s place.
Western Hill Villa. Why did that name sound so familiar?
Had Kate mentioned it before?
To think that foolish woman, Chantelle, would live outside the Wilson estate even after being officially acknowledged.
Did that mean Daniel’s care for her was just for show?
Ruby smoothed out her dress and rang the doorbell.
"Mrs. Lowe? What a surprise. What brings you here?" Thea had just pulled up on her electric scooter and walked over, a mischievous look on her face.
She didn’t need to be told why Ruby was there. It was obvious—now that Chantelle was back, her mother had come to take advantage.
Ruby’s face fell instantly.
"Mrs. Lowe? I think you mistook me for someone else." She gave Thea a quick glance, clearly not recognizing her.
She hadn’t expected the famous designer from the upscale dress shop to show up in casual sportswear on a scooter.
"Huh? No, I remember you! You and your husband came to our store to pick out a gown. I even gave you a free gift, Ma’am! Your husband’s name is James Lowe, right?" Thea grinned, happily trying to jog her memory while pressing the doorbell.
"Y-You’re the designer from that dress shop? Do I know you?" Ruby finally recognized her but had no plan to talk with her longer.
"Oh, we keep a customer database. Are you here as Chantelle’s guest too? Coming for dinner?"
"Us?"
