Chapter 897: 883, What’s wrong with being single for life (3) Chapter 897: 883, What’s wrong with being single for life (3) Zhan Mingyan turned around and was met with the concern in the man’s eyes, the angry words she wanted to say suddenly choked in her throat and she couldn’t spit them out.
She threw the shopping bag at him, “It’s all your fault, my mom has noticed. Hurry up and put on the clothes.”
“Your mom knows I’m here?” He caught the shopping bag, his eyebrows slightly raised, a quiet smile forming on his lips.
“My mom doesn’t know it’s you, sigh, just put on the clothes first, I’ll go out and explain things to my mom.” She rubbed her temples and said.
Bai Jue stepped forward and grabbed her wrist, “I’ll change my clothes, and we’ll go out together. I’ll explain things to your mom.”
Zhan Mingyan looked down at the large hand on her wrist and gracefully withdrew her hand, “No need, I can explain things to my mom myself.”
If he went to explain, he’d probably make things even less clear.
“Hurry up and change, stop dawdling.”
After speaking, she pulled open the door and walked out quickly.
Outside, Lu Hui craned her neck continuously looking toward the inside room. Seeing Zhan Mingyan coming out, she quickly withdrew her gaze and picked up the cup to drink some water.
“Mom, you have to listen to me later, don’t get agitated, and don’t jump to conclusions.” Zhan Mingyan said seriously as she sat down.
“Is the person inside Lin Yi?” Lu Hui wildly speculated.
Zhan Mingyan, “…”
Seeing that she didn’t object, Lu Hui pressed on, “Really, Lin Yi? Did you two hit it off so quickly? Were you together last night?”
By the end of her questioning, Lu Hui felt her heart couldn’t quite take it.
Zhan Mingyan felt as if thunder was rolling over her head and she cried out, “Mom, what are you talking about? Lin Yi and I are just friends who have just met. Where is your mind going?”
“Then who is the person inside?” Lu Hui urged.
“It is, is…” Zhan Mingyan scratched her head, not knowing where to start.
Suddenly, the door to the inner room opened.
Lu Hui’s head snapped up, squinting her eyes. When she clearly saw the person walking out, she froze on the spot, her face filled with astonishment.
Then, she turned her gaze back to Zhan Mingyan, “Yanyan, how did you explain things to me yesterday? Now, the two of you”
Turns out her daughter had been leading her on.
They were living together already, yet she claimed there was nothing between them.
“Mom, mom, don’t get excited, it’s not what you think.” Zhan Mingyan, seeing her mother’s face darken, moved desperately close to her, patting her back to help her relax, “Listen to me, it’s a misunderstanding.”
“Auntie!” Bai Jue walked over, the black casual clothes made him appear more solemn and aloof.
“Bai Jue, did you stay here last night?” Lu Hui asked with a stern face.
Bai Jue looked at Zhan Mingyan, seeing her hidden hand behind her making gestures towards him, his eyes slightly downcast, “Mmm, I stayed here last night.”
“…”
Zhan Mingyan covered her face, not daring to look at her mother’s expression anymore.
“So, you’re saying that you and Yanyan stayed here together for the night?” Lu Hui looked at him steadily and asked again.
Bai Jue nodded, “Mmm.”
Lu Hui turned her head to look at her daughter, a look that was both smiling and not, “Zhan Mingyan, do you have anything else to add?”
Mom, with you smiling like that, my heart’s in flutters.
Zhan Mingyan inwardly groaned, her speech fast-paced but steady, “Mom, it really is just a misunderstanding. He came to see me last night, then he got caught in the rain and came down with a fever, his car broke down, so I found some pills for him to take. He slept in there; I slept on this sofa. Aside from that, nothing happened.”
“What a coincidence?” Lu Hui clearly didn’t believe it.
“Yeah, it was just that coincidental. If you don’t believe me, go feel his forehead; he still has a slight fever.” Zhan Mingyan nodded rapidly like a pecking chicken.
Lu Hui asked, “Then why didn’t you take him to the hospital?”
Zhan Mingyan choked on her words, and Bai Jue spoke for her, “Auntie, it was late at night. I fainted at the doorstep, and with the rain, it wasn’t convenient for Mingyan to send me to the hospital, so she sheltered me for the night.”
“Late at night?” Lu Hui looked at him. “What were you doing coming to see my Yanyan in the middle of the night?”
“Nothing, just he brought me something.” Afraid that Bai Jue would say something he shouldn’t, Zhan Mingyan spoke up first.
“I didn’t ask you,” said Lu Hui.
Pfft—
That hurts, Mom.
Zhan Mingyan cast a significant glance at Bai Jue, signaling him not to speak rashly.
After pondering for a moment, Bai Jue’s expression suddenly turned severe, his usual frivolous demeanor nowhere to be seen, “Auntie, I like Mingyan. I did some foolish things in the past, so I’m now trying hard to earn her forgiveness.”
Silence pervaded the room, punctuated only by the tinkling of the wind chimes.
Zhan Mingyan looked at him in surprise, her lips parting slightly.
From the corner of her eye, Lu Hui saw her daughter’s astonished expression and her gaze shifted back and forth between the two, “Bai Jue, you like Yanyan?”
“Yes, I like her,” Bai Jue affirmed resolutely.
Lu Hui’s smile was barely visible, “Yanyan, what about you?”
“Don’t like him,” Zhan Mingyan mumbled with her head down.
She had liked him, and it hurt. She didn’t want to go through that pain again.
Upon hearing her answer, Bai Jue’s spirits plummeted into a deep abyss.
“Bai Jue, whatever issues or misunderstandings you two have, I won’t interfere, but Yanyan is my only daughter, and I don’t want her to be hurt. If you can’t guarantee that you’ll love her for life, then I’m sorry, I do not support your being together,” Lu Hui said slowly, holding Zhan Mingyan’s hand.
Bai Jue stood up straight, bowed deeply to her, and said in a low voice, “Auntie, in this lifetime, I only have eyes for Zhan Mingyan. Even if she marries someone else, I won’t marry another.”
Promises aren’t given lightly; once made, they are for a lifetime.
Zhan Mingyan and Lu Hui were both startled by his words, and Zhan Mingyan couldn’t hide the shock in her eyes, rendered speechless.
Bai Jue lifted his hand to remove the necklace around his neck and took off the ring hanging from it, slipping it onto the little finger of his left hand.
“Zhan Mingyan, this is my promise to you. If you don’t marry me, then I’ll remain single for life.” He raised his left hand, showing her the ring on his little finger clearly.
Without her, remaining single was no issue.
Moreover, it was he who had erred first; it could serve as punishment for having rejected her confessions twice.
“Bai Jue, you…” The simplicity and luxury of the ring imprinted in her eyes, and Zhan Mingyan was shocked by his words.
Bai Jue’s lips curled into a roguish smile, and he walked over to squat in front of her, then took her hand and stuffed the necklace into it.
“This is for you. Whenever you’re ready to forgive me, this ring will be waiting for you.” He looked up at her, the corners of his mouth holding that familiar mischievous grin.
