Zhan Mingyan looked down at the necklace in her palm, her gaze shifting to the ring on his finger. Her resolve seemed to waver a little.

If it had been before, when she confessed her love to him, she might have accepted the necklace and his feelings without hesitation. Now, it seemed too late.

Meanwhile, Lu Hui’s gaze flitted between the two, a smirk creeping onto her lips.

“Alright, you didn’t sleep well last night either. Don’t open the shop today, go back and rest. I’ll be off, and eat your breakfast while it’s still hot,” he said, unable to bear her discomfort. Bai Jue stood up, gently rubbed her head, and spoke in a soft voice.

“Aunt Lu, I’ll be leaving now.”

Lu Hui nodded, “Be careful on your way.”

“Mm,” Bai Jue hooked up a smile, lowering his gaze to Zhan Mingyan for a moment before stepping away.

Hearing the sound of the door, Zhan Mingyan’s eyes darkened, and she gripped the necklace tightly, then stood up and hurriedly chased after him.

“Ah, young people!” Lu Hui rested her chin on her hand, watching through the glass door as her daughter chased after him and couldn’t help but sigh.

In the early morning, the streets were still deserted, with only the occasional sanitation worker sweeping the ground.

“Bai Jue, wait up!”

Zhan Mingyan chased after him, running with hurried footsteps.

Bai Jue was on a phone call when he heard her voice. He turned around, and she had already run up to him. “What’s the matter, can’t bear to let me go?” he joked.

Zhan Mingyan’s eyes dodged, opening her hand with the necklace lying steadily in her palm. “Take this back, I can’t accept it.”

Ever since she first saw him on the island, she had noticed the necklace he always wore around his neck. She could tell that the necklace meant something extraordinary to him. Now that anything between them was impossible, the promise that the necklace represented was too heavy for her to bear.

The morning breeze blew, messing up her long hair, cleverly hiding the emotions in her eyes.

Bai Jue lowered his hand, his gaze locked on her face, the smile on his lips gradually fading, “The things I, Bai Jue, give away are never taken back. If you don’t want to keep it, then just throw it away.”

“Bai Jue, don’t be like this, I know the necklace is important to you. Take it back, please. Just pretend I didn’t hear what you said before, and that you didn’t say it. We… We simply cannot be,” she managed with all the strength she could muster, her pain had numbed her.

“Cheep-cheep,”

The fledgling birds cried delicately from the branches. A gentle breeze passed, carrying two or three falling leaves spiraling in the air before landing on his shoulder.

Bai Jue’s presence turned cold, the laughter in his eyes gone. He stepped forward, stretched out his arm, and pulled her into an embrace, holding her tightly.

“Don’t move, let me hug you for a bit.”

His low, husky voice rang in her ear, causing Zhan Mingyan to freeze with her hands in mid-air, unsure of how to react.

“Zhan Mingyan, no matter how many times you reject me, I won’t give up,” he murmured into the crook of her neck. The faint scent of her hair made it hard for him to let go.

“Whether you drive me away or say the harshest words, I’m not going to give up. The next time you go on a blind date, I’ll definitely be there first thing.”

As he spoke, the warmth of his breath brushed against her neck, causing Zhan Mingyan’s face to flush, paralyzed.

Bai Jue reluctantly let go, stood up straight, and looked down at the necklace in her hand. He took it from her, “If you don’t want to keep this necklace, then it has no reason to exist.”

After saying that, his eyes narrowed, and he casually tossed it away.

“Bai Jue, you’re insane,” Zhan Mingyan captured his hand, her eyes wide with shock.

“I’ll be going now, see you tomorrow.” He gently pinched her cheek, the corners of his mouth tugging into a mischievously charming smile.

He turned and left, his tall figure appearing somewhat forlorn.

Not until his silhouette disappeared at the street corner did Zhan Mingyan come back to her senses and remembered the necklace she had thrown away. She bent over and started searching for it on the ground.

“Necklace, necklace…”

She muttered to herself, anxiety tinting her eyes.

Where could it have been thrown to?

“Yanyan, what are you looking for?” Lu Hui, who had come out to look for someone, saw her crouched under a tree sorting through the fallen leaves and couldn’t help but frown.

“Mom, it’s nothing, go back inside. I’m looking for something,” Zhan Mingyan said without turning her head, speeding up her search through a pile of leaves beside the big tree.

“What are you looking for? Let me help you,” Lu Hui said.

“A necklace.”

Lu Hui paused, “Are you talking about the necklace Bai Jue just gave you?”

Zhan Mingyan nodded, her face turning red with urgency, her hands getting dirty with mud, and she murmured to herself, “It was clearly thrown this way, why can’t I find it?”

Lu Hui walked down the steps, her gaze attracted by a glimmer of silver near the stairs. In a patch of soft green Grass Cluster, the silver sparkled.

She walked over for a closer look and saw that it was indeed Bai Jue’s necklace.

“Yan…”

About to speak, she stopped herself as if she thought of something, picked up the necklace quietly, and slipped it into her pocket.

“How can it not be found, how can it not be found?”

Sweat formed on Zhan Mingyan’s forehead, and her eyes gradually reddened.

Seeing that she was about to cry, Lu Hui walked over, crouched down, and looked at her, “Yanyan, you said you didn’t like him. So why do you care so much about his necklace, hmm?”

Zhan Mingyan’s hand brushing the leaves paused, and she hung her head even lower, “That necklace is very important to him, he shouldn’t have thrown it away in anger.”

“You already said you don’t like him; why do you care whether the necklace is important to him?” Lu Hui didn’t let her off the hook, speaking bluntly.

“But he threw the necklace away because of me, and I won’t feel right until I find it and give it back to him,” Zhan Mingyan replied evasively.

“Is that so?” Lu Hui smiled faintly.

“Yanyan, you can lie to me, but you can’t lie to your own heart. Even if you find the necklace and return it to him, if he throws it away again, won’t it be the same?”

“Mom, what are you talking about? I’m not lying to my own heart,” Zhan Mingyan stubbornly denied.

“If that’s not the case, why do you look like you’re about to cry over his necklace? Yanyan, life is neither too long nor too short. Don’t always grip onto the past; you should look forward. You clearly love each other, yet you torture each other. It hurts him and doesn’t it hurt you too?” Lu Hui said softly, trying to console her.

“Mom, please go back. I’ll find the necklace myself,” Zhan Mingyan changed the subject.

Lu Hui reluctantly took her hand, “Alright, stop looking. Let’s go back.”

“No, I have to find the necklace,” Zhan Mingyan pulled away from her grasp and ran to another spot to continue searching.

Lu Hui stood up, “Stop looking; the necklace is with me.”

At these words, Zhan Mingyan spun around, and as Lu Hui took out the necklace from her pocket, joy spread across her face, and she quickly ran towards her.
