Mercenary’s War
Chapter 1154 - 1154 One Thousand One Hundred Thirty-Seven Breakthrough

1154: Chapter One Thousand One Hundred Thirty-Seven: Breakthrough 1154: Chapter One Thousand One Hundred Thirty-Seven: Breakthrough Gao Yang looked at the mushroom cloud in the sky, then at the dust-covered faces around him, swallowed hard, and then said into the intercom: “Worker Bee, Big Bird, Little Fly, how are you all?”

“I’m fine, just a ringing in my ears.”

“I’m okay.”

“No problem, Boss.”

After the three men reported back one by one, Gao Yang finally breathed a sigh of relief.

They were so close, yet they had somehow made it through, all thanks to a hero whose name he still didn’t know, who had saved everyone.

At this moment, Saidev was still staring blankly at the west gate.

The force of the explosion was so massive that the wall, stretching out from the west gate to both sides, collapsed over a long section, directly brought down by the blast wave.

After looking for a while, Saidev shouted with a hoarse voice, “Muhad, answer me, Muhad!”

Saidev called out twice but got no response, then Rafael quietly said, “It doesn’t matter who did it, they must be dead.

At such a close distance, there’s no way they could have survived.”

There were people on the wall, holding their ground, but with the blast wave having destroyed the thick walls of the prison, there was no need to elaborate on the fate of those on top.

Saidev seemed not to have heard Rafael’s words, continuing to shout, “Muhad, answer me, over.”

Still, no one responded, until someone said in a heavy voice over the intercom, “Sir, Rajeben destroyed that truck, I saw it clearly.

He crawled out from the west gate and took out the truck.”

Saidev took a deep breath and then sighed, “The enemy can’t attack us right now.

Send a few people to check on Rajeben and Muhad’s situation.”

The dust was settling, and the Rebel Army infantry was already swarming in.

That tank, the one that provided cover for the infantry charging over, didn’t need to be considered anymore.

The people behind the tank were wiped out, and the crew inside the tank were also dead; they were killed by the shock of the explosion from the truck that was too close.

As for the remaining two armored vehicles, they were not rushing over at the moment.

They were waiting for a large number of infantry to enter the prison together.

The current situation in Aleppo Prison was that the gates were wide open, as a very long section of the surrounding wall had collapsed.

The previous obstacles that had a significant impact on the Rebel Army no longer existed.

Gao Yang didn’t understand why the tank was stationed so close to the self-destructing truck; he truly didn’t know what the enemy was thinking.

He didn’t know if the enemy had noticed that the self-destructing truck was still quite far from the main prison building, but as the dust settled and the collapsed wall could be seen, the Rebel Army rushed over impatiently.

Gao Yang didn’t have night vision devices, so when the dust was thick, he couldn’t see through it to observe and shoot distant targets, but as the dust cleared, he could begin shooting.

Gao Yang set up his gun but didn’t shoot immediately.

He wanted to wait for the enemy to come closer before firing.

Gao Yang had a long-range, but the main firepower inside the prison still consisted of automatic rifles, and the range of those was not great.

Premature firing by Gao Yang wouldn’t significantly affect the enemy’s offensive, and firing too soon would only draw in suppressive fire from the enemy.

Therefore, he needed to wait until the enemy approached within range of the automatic rifles before opening fire, so as to inflict maximum casualties on the enemy.

Saidev had already called the reserves back into action.

The enemy no longer had self-destructing trucks.

Now, it was time to fight against the enemy infantry, and deploying reserves into combat was necessary to ensure sufficient defensive firepower on all fronts.

Saidev was busily redeploying troops in a tense manner, while Gao Yang was focused on watching the enemy’s lines.

Finally, feeling it was the right moment, Gao Yang said in a deep voice, “Fire!”

Once Gao Yang started shooting, it was an unstoppable rhythm.

The enemy was very close this time, and there were many of them, making the difficulty of shooting almost zero for him.

However, while shooting, Gao Yang felt something was wrong.

Glolov’s machine gun would fire a couple of shots then stop, and after firing again, it would cease shooting.

Gao Yang turned his head to look and saw Glolov with an anxious expression on his face.

After a few more shots, barely firing more than a dozen bullets, Glolov stopped firing and then had to pull the gun’s action before firing a few more rounds and having to stop again to pull the action.

“What’s wrong?”

“It’s jamming, keeps on jamming!”

Glolov shouted helplessly, then once again pulled the action.

Gao Yang grew anxious; it was crucial for suppressing the enemy’s direct fire capabilities, and machine gun malfunctions at this time could be deadly.

Glolov’s heavy machine gun had been damaged, and the one he was using now had been transferred from somewhere else.

Although the gun had been working quite normally until recently, it was unclear why it started jamming continuously now.

It’s a hassle to move heavy machine guns, so when the self-destructing truck arrived, Glolov had no choice but to drop the gun and run for his life, not knowing if the jamming was caused by damage from the shock or lack of maintenance.

“Can the malfunction be fixed?

I’ll suppress the enemy; you deal with the malfunction!”

By this time, gunfire had already erupted everywhere, but Gao Yang had shifted his main shooting targets from the infantry to the enemy’s suppressive firepower, such as anti-aircraft guns and machine guns.

This task should have been Glolov’s, if not for the machine gun breakdown.

After firing a few shots and experiencing another jam, Glolov opened the machine gun cover, took a quick look, fiddled with it for a bit, closed the cover and fired a few more shots, only to have it jam again.

“No good!

Can’t fix it for the moment, bring me my light machine gun!”

The roles of Glolov and Gao Yang were switched, now it was Gao Yang and Cui Bo suppressing the enemy’s heavy firepower, while Glolov was shooting at the advancing infantry with a light machine gun.

The enemy was rapidly closing in.

The terrain outside Aleppo Prison was quite complicated too, offering the Rebel Army plenty of cover, but the key factor was that the rebels had blown up a section of the wall.

The Rebel Army launched attacks from four directions simultaneously; once they got close to the wall, they would avoid the high-positioned firepower from inside the prison.

As long as the guards on the wall could not shoot directly downwards, it was safe for the rebels to run along the wall, right up until they reached the gap and could enter the prison.

The safest approach was to prevent the Rebel Army from getting near the wall, but there were too many rebels, and their suppressive firepower was fierce, pinning down the guards on the wall so they could hardly raise their heads.

Glolov got his light machine gun and immediately began firing at the rebels surging towards the west gate, when Gao Yang shouted loudly, “Worker Bee!

Target two, large dispersal pattern, three rounds rapid fire!”

Gao Yang had memorized the coordinate map drawn by Worker Bee, and of course, Tommy, who had drawn the map, knew what Gao Yang was talking about.

He adjusted the mortar tube and fired three rounds in quick succession.

The shells exploded amidst the dense crowd, and Gao Yang, while firing, still kept an eye on the battlefield and roared, “Target one, cut off firing!”

Tommy started to fire the mortar slowly but continuously towards the position facing the west gate, and after four or five shots, Gao Yang shouted, “Stop!”

The rebels making a direct push towards the west gate position couldn’t get close; Satan’s numerous rifles were accurate enough to nearly blockade that side, making a direct assault on the west gate nearly impossible for the rebels.

But the infantry coming from the east managed to get close to the wall.

“We can’t hold the east side!

The enemy is at the wall; we need to prevent them from breaking through!”

After shouting to Gao Yang, Saidev yelled, “No matter what, we can’t let the enemy in!”

The armored vehicle moved closer to the west gate again, raking the position with heavy fire, and Gao Yang bellowed, “Little Fly!”

Right after Gao Yang finished calling out, a rocket flew out from a building, hitting the armored vehicle and turning it into a fireball.

“Understood!”

After acknowledging Gao Yang, Frey fired another rocket, which missed the armored vehicle.

However, after waiting just a few seconds and realizing he had not hit the target, he immediately fired another rocket, which finally blew up the last armored vehicle.

With the first breach in the prison wall, the Rebel Army’s morale and momentum were stronger than in previous attacks, and despite heavy casualties, they continued their assault with no intention of retreating.

“The enemy is flanking us!”

Saidev roared again.

The rebels who had breached the eastern side and got to the base of the wall took a wide path around from both the south and north sides, and gathered directly at the gap at the wall’s base.

A few rebel soldiers clambered over the collapsed wall, but they were immediately killed before they could descend from the rubble; yet, more rebels were already flanking from both sides, taking advantage of the fallen wall to use the rubble as cover, and began close-quarters firing with the defenders inside the prison buildings.

The prison wall, made of large stone blocks, offered strong protection, and the piles of stones formed by the collapsed wall also offered substantial defense.

Although Satan’s men could still shoot their enemies one by one with efficiency, the targets taking cover at the breach needed to expose themselves to be hit, and most of the rebels were not exposing themselves but hiding behind the stone heaps.

More and more rebels were reaching the breach, and although they couldn’t immediately enter the prison, they were able to secure a foothold at the prison’s entrance, especially the more hidden rebels behind the uncollapsed part of the wall near the breach.

Saidev picked up his SVD – the Dragunov sniper rifle – but he had yet to fire, instead constantly observing the situation and directing combat.

After making a judgment, Saidev shouted, “Let the enemy in!

Reduce the fire, let the rebels at the breach come in, then hit them once they’re inside!”

Gao Yang did not oppose; in fact, if Saidev hadn’t suggested it, he would have proposed the same strategy.

The enemies at the breach had cover and couldn’t be easily eliminated, but once they came in and entered the prison, they would lose their cover, making it easy for the guards inside the building to eliminate them.

Of course, the number of enemies let in at a time couldn’t be too many, as that might lead to chaos.

Yet with Satan’s men present, the number of rebels entering the prison could be controlled, ensuring that the situation wouldn’t spiral out of control with too many enemies getting inside.
