Chapter 426: Chapter 300: Suicide Potion (First Update)_1

She thought about it and decided to drop the matter, figuring the individuals were targeting her specifically and likely uninterested in anybody else.

Mu Lin casually took a pill from the small porcelain bottle and placed it in front of everyone.

"This is your final test on whether or not you get to stay." Mu Lin spoke softly to the crowd. "Let’s see how many of you can figure out what it’s made of." The corners of her lips turned up slightly. "Remember, don’t taste it. It’s lethal." She didn’t want to waste the antidote.

Having said that, she got up and walked in the direction of Jing Chen and Hong Mingsheng.

Jing Chen pulled Mu Lin to his side and looked at the people struggling with the tiny pill. He grinned, "Are you trying to trouble them, my lady?" He was skeptical that any of the individuals present could determine the elements of the poison made by Mu Lin.

Upon hearing Jing Chen’s comment, Mu Lin looked up at him and retorted, "Are you feeling sorry for them?" His puzzled expression and Hong Mingsheng’s choke on his own saliva were induced by her remark.

Whenever Dr. Mu spoke, her sudden fierceness always seemed to catch people off-guard.

After some time together, Hong Mingsheng had begun to understand Mu Lin. Despite her odd personality as the rumors had suggested, she was generally pleasant, especially towards Hong Boyuan.

The only thing that made Hong Mingsheng particularly pleased about Hong Boyuan was the relationship between the Hong family and Mu Lin. They were practically intertwined now, and if any of the Hong family met with health issues in the future, he believed Mu Lin would not ignore them.

The people of great families most fear ageing, sickness, and mortality. Or rather, anyone in power fears these things.

Despite possessing everything, they only had one chance at life.

"Dr. Mu, do you truly believe they can..." Not only did Jing Chen doubt them, Hong Mingsheng, too, was skeptical they could figure out the composition of Mu Lin’s creation.

Hopefully, not everyone would be sent away today.

Mu Lin laughed, "They don’t need to fully unravel it. I just want to see how many of them can identify a few of the components — see what they’re made of." She admitted that besides her master, Mu Jue, hardly anyone else could completely break it down.

"Besides, what I’ve given them is essentially my earliest research. It shouldn’t be too difficult." Maybe.

Mu Lin’s gaze was deep and unknowable, as if she were lost in thought.

Hong Mingsheng thoughtfully nodded his head, a light smile on his face. Despite Mu Lin’s claim of it being not difficult, he knew it was anything but simple.

"Linlin, do you fancy anyone?" By this, Jing Chen meant whether or not there was anyone among the ten to twenty people assembled who Mu Lin found agreeable – someone she wished to keep.

Mu Lin nodded, "There are a few." She lightly laughed, her calm gaze resting on a few old Chinese medicine doctors. "What do you think, don’t the elderly love to flaunt their age and experience?" Mu Lin turned her head towards Jing Chen.

She felt that among them were several older practitioners who were quite arrogant — they were probably quite confident in their own abilities, despite the fact she would be their future boss.

However, what she did best was dealing blows to one’s self-esteem.

Upon hearing Mu Lin’s comment, Jing Chen smirked. "Not necessarily, have you forgotten how our family elder and the likes of Mr. Zhou never flaunted their age upon meeting with you?" The truly powerful are humble. Only those unable to concede superiority would be most arrogant and vain.

"That’s true." Mu Lin smiled gently. "I was recruited by Mr. Zhou into the Military Hospital, despite all my unreasonable demands, Mr. Zhou never displayed any dissatisfaction. He was genuinely kind-hearted." She wondered whether her actions back then had challenged Mr. Zhou’s authority, considering he was after all the director of a major hospital.

"Mr. Zhou is forthright." This was Jing Chen’s assessment of Zhou Jiansheng, who truly was a self-effacing and strict person, except when it came to Mu Lin. "I suppose he must have recognised your potential back then, there’s no reason he would’ve been unhappy with you." Jiang Chen knew Mr. Zhou among others had taken a special liking to his future wife.

As for Dr. Mei, since Mu Lin was a Chinese medicine practitioner, she was in the same craft. Besides, her medical skills truly made others regard her highly.

Mu Lin herself didn’t think she could understand medical science more profoundly than Dr. Mei. After all, her specialisation was poison and a penchant for reading far too many bizarre and ancient texts.

Mu Lin possessed a potential that was hard to ignore. Despite her arrogance, she stayed true to who she was. Her wilfulness was balanced with her kindness. Jing Chen knew Mu Lin was unbothered by all this, yet in his eyes, Mu Lin’s authenticity was what made her truly loveable.

This might be the reason so many people were attracted to her. Even the most troublesome youngster in their Jing family, behaved himself in her presence. He heard that the kid was doing quite well in the army nowadays.

"Linlin." Jing Chen gently embraced her, his smile enigmatic. "Our family elder has been nagging me, asking when I’m bringing his granddaughter-in-law home." Despite it being his wedding, he felt as though the elder was more excited about it than him.

Mu Lin gave him a dismissive glance. "Are you sure that’s what family elder actually said?" She didn’t believe it.

It must be said, Mu Lin really didn’t understand Mr. Jing too well. However, Mr. Jing had never brought up such words in front of Jing Chen, mostly just pondering to himself at most, then dropping hints. Unfortunately, sometimes even if one is anxious, there isn’t much that can be done.

Regardless, the meaning was basically the same.

Jing Chen just kept his own counsel, simply gripped Mu Lin’s hand tighter.

Hong Mingsheng had no particular feelings towards the display of their affection. After all, he himself was a married man. However, from their conversation it wasn’t hard to discern that Mr. Jing, Elder Mei, and Elder Zhou, mentioned by Jing Chen, were all big shots in B City. Ordinary folks wouldn’t usually get to see them.

Mr. Jing, one of the elders from the China military area, hardly anyone in China dared not to respect him. However, it was said, Mr. Jing didn’t seem to favor going out, nor did he care much about current affairs.

Meanwhile, Elder Zhou was in charge of the Military Hospital; and Elder Mei, must be the great Chinese medicine practitioner of B City’s Military Hospital, right? He was like an authority in their field of Chinese medicine. However, they all held Mu Lin in such high regard.

The backing of young doctor Mu was dopey beyond belief.

What made Hong Mingsheng even more envious, however, were not these aspects, but that the Jing family had a person of Mu Lin’s caliber at their disposal. That was the greatest fortune.

He had heard that Mr. Jing’s health was not very good; it must be much better now.

Soon, half an hour had passed and Mu Lin returned to her original position and looked indifferently at the people in front of her, who were straining their minds and immersed in their own thoughts. "How’s it going? Any progress?"

Regrettably, no one spoke. Even the elder practitioners of Chinese medicine wore the same expression.

At that moment, they weren’t sure if they were reflecting on their shortcomings or deep in thought, or perhaps, introspecting.

"I have a question to ask." At that time, one of the elder practitioners of Chinese medicine looked at Mu Lin and began speaking.

Mu Lin: "Ask away."

"This is a toxic herb, right?" The specialist had identified several highly toxic herbal medicines, but he couldn’t even guess any others.

The elder’s face reddened a bit. They say that Chinese medicine is subject to lifelong learning. Little had he expected that he would be stumped this time.

"Yes." Mu Lin nodded and unhesitatingly explained, "This thing is called Biluo. Biluo implies a passage to the afterlife. The interpretation behind this phrase should be clear to all of you. Upon taking this poison, one will first experience Biluo, and then enter the underworld. It is the best medication for suicide, so one won’t experience any pain. The composition procedure is not complex and the ingredients are also not complicated."

"Who is the owner of this thing?" Suddenly, the elder practitioner remembered a name, which he had been pondering from the moment he saw the plaque outside until now. But is that possible?

"Poison Doctor." Mu Lin responded calmly, the corner of her mouth still maintained its calm curve.

Just as he thought! There was a flicker of shock in the elder’s eyes. He was usually calm, but at that moment, he appeared extremely excited, "you know the Poison Doctor, too?" Or to be more precise, had she met the legendary Poison Doctor?

Mu Lin raised her eyebrows, "in this world, I presume no one knows her better than I do." Who could know her better than herself?

Mu Lin: ...

"That is truly wonderful" The elder looked at Mu Lin with a reminiscing expression. Mu Lin looked at him, slightly perplexed, "So, do you know her too?" She didn’t recall him at all.

The elder shook his head in haste, "No, how could I possibly get a chance to know her? I had merely heard about the Poison Doctor’s feats." This was something he had heard about several years ago. Without today’s events, this matter might’ve stayed buried in his heart forever.

"I see." Heard.

Mu Lin nodded.

The elder looked at Mu Lin with a smile, "You won’t believe it, but three years ago, I visited the forest where she resides. Initially, I was hoping to get a chance to meet her, to learn something about medicine. However, I almost lost my life there." The danger level of that place is not something an ordinary person could withstand.

The elder smiled awkwardly, "I remember that at that time, a person named East Blue Sea guided me to make my way out of that jungle safely."

However, upon hearing the elder’s words, a young guy nearby suddenly contradicted him, "Why do I feel there’s something not quite right about your story?"
