Chapter 52: Aria And Damien Reunion

Chapter 52: Aria And Damien Reunion

Aria was hesitant when Hailey asked her to speak to Damien before the wedding, but her friend’s persistence made her say yes.

Hailey led Aria to her father’s study and said, "I will go get him."

"But why does he want to see me?" Aria asked before Hailey could leave.

Hailey sighed and said, "Didn’t you say you are Tristan’s representative? If you can convince him that you can set up a meeting between him and Tristan, then he will be happy."

"But...."

"Please, Aria."

Aria sighed and nodded, "I will do it."

Hailey smiled and said, "Stay here while I call him."

After Hailey left, Aria’s eyes roamed round the study. It was actually no different from a normal office. Her eyes landed on the photo frame on the desk.

Aria picked up the frame and saw that it was a picture of young Hailey in her father’s arms and her brother standing beside her.

Young Hailey looked so happy in the picture that Aria wondered how it feels to have a father who loves you. Her own father had abandoned her the moment she was born.

The door to the study was opened, making Aria quickly return the picture to its place.

Damien stood frozen when he entered the study. Even though the girl’s back was facing him, he knew for certain that the woman before him was his Aria.

"Aria," he called out softly.

Aria, who was preparing what she was going to say to Hailey’s fiancé in her mind, immediately turned when she heard her name being called by a very familiar voice.

"Damien?" Aria’s eyes widened in surprise. So Hailey’s fiancé is actually her childhood friend!

Beautiful. That was the first word that Damien thought the moment Aria turned to him. She still had her adorable baby cheeks, but she was so beautiful that he couldn’t take his eyes off her. But hold on! His Aria is Tristan’s wife? That can’t be possible.

"So you are marrying Hailey? Why? What about your mate?" Aria asked; she could still remember his eyes lighting up when he talked about his mate, but now, at the mention of her, his expression darkened.

"Let’s talk about that later. Instead, tell me that you are not actually married to Tristan." Damien said. Even though they hadn’t seen each other for two years, he still knew each of her expressions, and judging from the way she was looking at him, he knew that her marriage with Tristan was very real. But why? How did Aria get involved with Tristan? How did they even meet?

"You are wondering how I got married to Tristan, right?" Aria asked with a forced smile.

Damien sighed and said, "I’ve forgotten that you are the only one who could read my thoughts."

Aria shook her head and said, "If I could really read your thoughts, then I would have known that you were planning to abandon me for two years."

"Aria..."

"No phone calls, no reply to messages. I spent most nights crying because I thought it was my fault; perhaps I did something to drive you away. And then suddenly you called, asking me to come stay with you, which I found ridiculous."

"It wasn’t your fault." Damien felt an aching in his heart as he heard the sadness in her voice. "I... I was in a really bad place, Aria, and if I didn’t want you to share that darkness, I didn’t want to corrupt your pure soul, but in trying to protect you, you had fallen into the hands of another man who is known to be a terrifying monster."

"Tristan isn’t a monster. Those are just rumors people made up because they couldn’t defeat or outsmart him." Aria said, tired of hearing bad things about the man who has always been kind to her.

"You are defending him as if you are in love with him." Damien said, and then his eyes became cold as he asked, "Do you love him?"

"That does not matter."

"It matters to me!" Damien shouted. "When I asked you to come live with me, you rejected. Is he the reason? How did you even get married to him?"

"Let’s talk about all that later. I, on the other hand, want to know why you are marrying my friend when you already have a mate."

"She is dead."

"What?"

"Killed by a rogue. She died in my arms, and I was too weak to save her." Damien said there was a glimpse of sadness in his eyes, but it quickly disappeared as he said, "But never again. I will never again be known as a weak man."

Aria could see the sadness in Damien’s eyes, even as he tried to hide it. She couldn’t believe that he had gone through the pain of losing his mate all alone. Why didn’t he call her? She would have rushed to wherever he was and comforted him, "I’m so sorry, Damien. I didn’t know such a thing happened to you."

"When we talked, why didn’t you ever tell me that you were married?" Damien asked.

"I... I don’t know. Maybe it was because I was still mad at you for abandoning me."

"And I’m sorry for that, for making you feel abandoned. I never wanted our friendship to end that way, but now that I am back, I will protect you."

Aria frowned and asked, "Protect me from what?"

"There is no way the Aria I knew would have married a man like Tristan just like that. Did he threaten you?"

"What, no! I will tell you everything, but we don’t have time for this. Your wedding with Hailey is supposed to start in less than twenty minutes. Guests are outside already waiting, and Hailey is anxious because she thinks you will call off the wedding. Why do you badly need Tristan to attend your wedding anyway?"

"Forget the wedding; my only priority at this moment is you."

"Why am I your priority, Damien? For two years, I was never a priority to you, so why have I suddenly become your priority? Hailey was there for me when I needed a friend. When my grandmother got poisoned and I didn’t know what to do, it was Hailey who stood by me and helped me to find a way for my grandmother to be saved."

"Hold on, Grandma got poisoned?" Damien asked with a frown.

Aria ignored his question and said, "If you call off this wedding, then I will no longer wish to have anything to do with you."

Damien looked at her and asked, "You care for your friend that much?"

"Yes, I do."

"Then leave Tristan."

"What?"

"It doesn’t matter how you married him, but if you want me to get married to Hailey right here, you have to give me your word that you will leave Tristan because such a man does not deserve you."
