Chapter 51: Pawn

"What do you mean Tristan isn’t here?" Damien asked angrily. When Jacob had come to his office, he was surprised to see Hailey there too, and he felt they had something bad to tell him, but to think that it was this!

"Only Aria came, and she said that Tristan might be here before the wedding ends." Hailey softly said.

Hearing that name again made his heart soften. To be honest, after finding out Tristan’s wife bears the same name as his childhood friend, he has been more curious to meet her than Tristan.

Damien sighed and said, "I wish to speak to this Aria."

"Of course you can," Jacob said with a laugh.

Hailey looked at her father and coldly replied, "After the wedding."

Damien let out a dark chuckle. "Wedding? What exactly did I say to you, Hailey? I told you that this wedding won’t happen unless Alpha Tristan attends it."

"And he has sent his wife to act as a representative to him. If you ignore her and refuse to continue, then forget about ever meeting Tristan. And you can’t overthrow a man you know nothing about."

Damien looked at Hailey with surprise in his eyes, and then he let out a short laugh. "You try to hide it, but you really are no different from your father."

Hailey ignored his taunt and stood in front of him as she said, "Your only connection right now to fulfill your obsession with Tristan is through Aria, and she is my best friend. You need me. I can get you information on Tristan through Aria; I am the only one who can help you find out Tristan’s weakness."

Damien smiled and held her cheek, using his thumb to caress her lips as he whispered, "I guess being married to you won’t be as boring as I thought."

Hailey felt goosebumps as he used his thumb to rub her lips. It would be a lie if she were to say she felt no attraction to Damien; after all, he was handsome, rich, and had all the qualities she had always hoped her mate would have.

Hailey wondered if he felt the same attraction to her, but to her immense disappointment, she watched as he removed his hand from her lips and took out his handkerchief from his pocket to clean his hand, as if he had just touched something dirty.

Damien dropped his handkerchief on the floor and said, "I want to speak to Aria before this wedding takes place, and if you refuse me, then I will convince the council to perform the Alpha ceremony on James, and when he becomes the Alpha, I have no doubt he will replace your father as his Beta, and your family will be no different from slaves. You have ten minutes to bring this girl to me, or I leave."

Hailey clenched her fist tightly as she watched him walk out.

Jacob forcefully turned to his daughter and shouted, "What is wrong with you?"

"Let go of me!" Hailey said, pushing her father away from her with all her strength.

Not expecting his daughter to push him away, Jacob stumbled backward in surprise.

Ignoring her father’s surprised look that immediately changed into anger, Hailey said, "This is all your fault; your greed has led me to this point where I feel like a terrible person. Is being a substitute Alpha a big achievement to you? All I wanted was to finish college, find my mate, and have a family, but you ruined it all, and now I am getting married to a man whom I have to prove my worth to. I have stabbed my friend in the back so many times to ensure I never lose my worth to you and him."

"Hailey..."

"When you promised my mother that you were going to look after me, is this what you meant? That you will take away everything that matters to me. School, my friend, and my hope. Was me being lonely so much the point where I will wither and start thinking of ending it all your definition of looking after me?" Hailey asked with sadness in her eyes.

"Stop your nonsense and get Aria to come here."

"I have dreamt about the day I will get married since I was a child; it was supposed to be a day of joy and happiness for me, but ever since this day began, I have seen no reason to smile genuinely. I regret it; I really regret the day I told you that I was glad that you were my father. If I could take back those words, I would do so in a heartbeat, and I hope she torments you in your dream for failing your promise."

"Stop it!"

Hailey flinched when her dad shouted with his wolf voice.

"Everything I have done is for you and your brother! Do you think the reason I wanted this position was because of greed? The Alpha position was my father’s, your grandfather’s birthright, and on his deathbed, I promise to regain back what the Milton family took for mine. He offered me the beta position as if he was doing me a favor." Jacob sighed and held his daughter gently as he said.

"Hailey, if this marriage does not go through and James becomes the Alpha, then he will strip our family of our right and prestige, and we will be no different from slaves. Damien is our only way of living; can you now see that I am doing this for you? With Damien, you will be a Luna, a respected one. Your child will be an Alpha, and the lineage will continue like that. This is the exact future I promised your mother for you, and it may not have started as a rosy one, but if you give it time, you will come to realize that I have made the best decision for you."

Hailey bit her lips as she finally released the tears she had been holding for a long time.

Jacob pulled her into his embrace and said, "You can make many more friends, Hailey. You have always been a social butterfly."

"But Aria...."

"Is nothing but your pawn. You have to stop seeing her as your friend and start seeing her as what she really means to you, and what exactly is that, Hailey?"

Hailey pulled away from her father’s embrace and cleaned her eyes as she answered, "My pawn."
