Chapter 25: A Love Story Doomed For Failure.

"Alpha Tristan, are you alright?" Celphias asked when he noticed the deep frown on Tristan’s face.

Tristan could feel everyone’s gaze on him, but despite the pain he was feeling, he didn’t succumb to it. He took in a deep breath before standing up. "I will have to take my leave. I have urgent matters to attend to."

Alpha Carter sneered. "So, the rest of us here have nothing urgent to deal with?"

Tristan smirked and said, "I don’t think killing a human and then taking over his entire company is considered urgent."

"You....." Alpha Carter’s face was flushed in anger. Only a few people knew what he had done, and unfortunately, Tristan was one of them.

Alpha Richard stood up as well and said, "If Tristan is leaving them, I’m out too."

"The both of you, sit down. Now," Celphias ordered, his voice laced with authority.

Tristan paused for a brief moment, then turned away, ignoring the demand as he began finding his way out with the aid of his cane.

Richard’s grin widened, wild and daring. He lunged, his fist flying toward Tristan.

In one swift motion, Tristan caught Richard’s fist midair, holding it firmly.

Richard’s smile grew into a twisted one as he asked, "When are you finally going to accept my duel?"

Tristan withdrew his hand from Richard’s fist as he coldly replied, "When you become worth my time."

"I have not given you the permission to leave, Tristan! Do not walk out on me!" Celphias shouted.

"Then I dare you to stop me." Tristan replied and continued walking until he left the building.

Cole, who was already waiting for him outside, could notice the change in his Alpha’s aura the moment he saw him.

"Are you alright?" Cole asked.

Tristan did not reply; instead, he said, "Walk me to the car."

Cole obeyed, and the moment Tristan entered the car, he started gasping for breath.

"Alp..."

"Drive!" Tristan shouted.

Cole obeyed, gripping the steering wheel tightly as the car sped away.

In the backseat, Tristan rolled up his sleeves, unbuttoned his shirt collar, and removed his glasses. His golden eyes glowed fiercely in the dim light. Slowly, his breathing steadied.

"Stop," Tristan commanded abruptly.

Cole braked immediately. He watched through the mirror as Tristan got out of the car.

Cole also removed his seatbelt and came out, but Tristan was nowhere to be seen.

"Where did he go?" Cole asked himself, looking around. How can a man who just left the car a few seconds ago disappear just like that?

Cole sighed, pulling a cigarette from his pocket. As he lit it, he heard a voice.

"You lost him, didn’t you?"

Cole turned to see Alpha Elywnn and scoffed, "So you were the one following us?"

Elywnn smiled and said, "You can’t blame me. I was just curious what a man like Tristan would call urgent."

Cole crushed his cigarette underfoot and turned to get back in the car.

"I’m curious. How is a blind man stronger, faster, and, I would dare say, more intelligent than us? You are his Beta, so you must know, right?" Elwynne asked, and when he received no answer from Cole, he let out a playful smile. "Unless you don’t know. What a Beta you are!"

Cole didn’t respond. He slammed the car door and drove off, leaving Elwynn standing alone with his smirk.

.....

Aria stumbled and fell on the floor as the man ran to her, revealing his sharp teeth and claws. She quickly closed her eyes in fear, waiting for the pain of being torn apart to come, but it never did.

When she opened her eyes, the werewolf was snarling, his claws inches away but unable to touch her. He struck at the air as if stopped by an invisible force.

The wolf’s eyes burned in confusion. "Do you have some sort of secret powers? I thought wolves from the Yalk clans were powerless." His gaze moved to the black gemstone on her neck that was glowing faintly, and his eyes lit up. Could it be the reason he couldn’t touch her was because of this pendant?

Aria’s gaze moved from the wolf to the pendant, which was now visible. Tristan had told her that this pendant would be capable of protecting her, and he would be able to feel when she was in danger.

Is he currently able to feel that she is in danger? Will he come to save her? Aria asked herself.

Seeing that this werewolf could not harm her, Aria stood up from the floor and took several steps back before turning back to run away.

The wolf looked at Aria’s back as she ran away, and there was a sadness in his eyes as he whispered to himself, "Why is she running away? Does she not want me to?"

The sadness in his eyes disappeared, replaced by a crazy glint as he ran after her.

Aria kept running until her legs could no longer take it, and she ended up falling to the ground and twisting her ankle.

She cried out but forced herself to stand, limping forward. The quiet street she found herself on was dimly lit by a single flickering streetlight, the silence pressing in around her.

Aria’s eyes became teary. She was so scared and didn’t even know where she was. At least Fred was safe, and hopefully that monster was no longer pursuing her.

"My phone." Aria whispered as she searched her pockets, but her phone wasn’t there. She then remembered dropping it in the alley.

"Looking for this?" A malicious voice that sent chills down Aria’s spine spoke.

Aria turned and saw him, looking at her with a smile on her face and with her phone in his hand.

"Why are you doing this to me? I don’t even know you." Aria cried. She was already feeling exhausted and could no longer run.

The werewolf dropped her phone and then crushed it underfoot. "I hold no grudges, babygirl; just blame it on your fate or, better still, blame it on your mother, who..."

Before he could finish, his eyes widened, blood dripping from his mouth. A sickening squelch echoed as his heart fell to the ground.

Aria stared in shock as the wolf’s body collapsed. Before she could process what had happened, familiar arms wrapped around her.

"Tristan?" Aria called out softly.

"I’m here." Tristan replied, hugging her body tightly.

Her tears fell freely as she clung to him. "What took you so long? I was so scared."

"You did well waiting for me," he murmured.

He pulled back slightly, cupping her face before pressing his lips to hers.

Aria stiffened, the kiss catching her off guard. The presence of the dead body nearby made her stomach churn. She tried to pull away, but Tristan held her tighter, his lips moving hungrily against hers.

Tristan’s lips trailed to her neck. He felt like he couldn’t think or breathe properly; her scent wasn’t enough to calm him down, and a voice in his head just kept pushing him to take more from her. As he brushed his fangs against her neck to mark her, he suddenly froze as a memory crashed into him.

"Devin, stop!" Aitana shouted as she tried to push her jealous mate away, but Devin’s grip only became tighter.

"You can only be mine." Devin growled, and despite her protest, he dug his fang into her neck and marked her.

Aitana screamed in pain and stopped struggling when she felt their bond becoming stronger as a result of the mark.

Devin looked at her, and when he saw the tears on her face, there was a little remorse in his eyes, but it was gone immediately it came.

"Now we are bonded, and if you just give me some time, then..."

"I hate you."

Devin looked at her in disbelief as he said, "You don’t mean that."

"Forcing your mark on me may have made our bond stronger, but it has also made my hatred for you stronger." Aitana said with indifference. She went forward to hit his chest as she repeatedly chanted, "I hate you, I hate you, Devin. I hate you!"

Tristan came out of his memory, and his fangs retracted as he pulled back, his breathing uneven.

"Tristan?" Aria softly called. Why was he suddenly acting so strange? He embraced her even more tightly, and Aria was about to ask him if he was alright when she heard his soft sob.

"Tristan." Aria whispered, and this time her voice was laced with concern and confusion. All her fear from almost being killed was gone, and the only thing she cared about at this moment was if Tristan was alright. Was he crying? But why?

Tristan couldn’t control his tears as he remembered his past life with her and their current situation. Suzette was right; this love story of theirs was doomed for failure even before it began. His time was running up, and he needed to ensure that Aria would forever be protected by the time he’s gone.
