Chapter 97: Chapter Eighty-Two

ERWIN

I think even the president of the state’s house isn’t as guarded as it is. It’s almost like there is a state secret hidden inside here.

"Listen carefully, you two." John’s serious voice pours through, "There are cameras everywhere in the house." He pauses and I can tell there is a smirk forming on his face, "There are two rooms where there is no camera. One is seemingly the mob boss’s bedroom and the other is the one that we are looking for."

"Or, the mob boss’s bedroom is the one that we are looking for and the other is the locker room?" I add. Ruth and I are entering the house through a window that I managed to unlock.

"Maybe." He agrees, "Nonetheless, we need to check out both rooms. We don’t want to miss anything."

Ruth and I are currently standing in the middle of a spacious living space. There is a touch of money everywhere. But the house is eerily cold and lifeless.

"Don’t any people live here?" Ruth spits out as he checks out his environment, squinting. "Why this place is like this?"

"The mob boss killed his wife years ago and he is out now. He doesn’t have any children either." John informs sternly.

"It explains this." Ruth shrugs.

I scan the room like an eagle and then ask, "What is the output here?"

"I have disabled the cameras for five minutes, to be exact," John informs, that there is a clicking sound in the background. "But I can’t give you assurance about guards. And here comes one."

Just as he says that I yank Ruth and duck behind a sofa. The guard swiftly enters the room. He scans the room for something amiss and when he finds nothing he disappears inside once again. All the time I grip Ruth’s mouth so hard that it makes him squirm. His eyes are bloodshot as I let his mouth go. He gasps like he hasn’t breathed for years.

"What the fuck?" He hisses, horrified, "I thought you were going to choke me to death!"

In response, I just roll my eyes and climb back to my feet. "Which way?"

"The staircase is at your left side," John says.

"I can see that idiot." I move to the staircase, my movements are as swift and dangerous as a panther. Ruth is crawling behind me, still coughing silently. "But climbing the stairs is very dangerous," I remark.

"There is no option." John returns matter-of-factly, "And so do you know that only fifteen seconds remain until the cameras are on again."

I curse under my breath, then yank Ruth to his feet and silently run to the staircase, "I will kill you if you make any noise." I warn mutely, just audible enough for Ruth and I to hear.

We jump up the stairs in a swift second, keeping our footsteps as light as possible. Ruth collapses beside the staircase on the second floor, breathing heavily.

"Did we make it?" I ask, there is no trace of labored breathing in my voice.

"Yep," John says simply as if it doesn’t affect him in the least. "By three seconds anyway. And now you have exactly seven minutes to find the bedroom." John instructs.

"Let me breathe first." Ruth is heaving like he is about to die.

"Useless trash." I sneer. "You are holding me back. I am leaving here."

"Hey, you can’t do that!" His eyebrows jump in shock, "John!" He cries and I kick him.

"I told you not to make any noise, you piece of shit." I hiss at him.

"Okay, now now," Leo’s airy voice comes through and makes my heart flutter, "Don’t fight among yourselves. We have a mission to focus on. Let’s pay our attention there okay?"

"Okay." I nod, I feel like I have grown two dog ears and a tail and have become a puppy, swinging my tail in the air as I heed my owner.

"Okay then." John’s voice comes in and I have returned to my usual self, "The bedroom is at the end of the hallway but there is a problem. A few guards are coming this way. You have to make it fast."

"Noted." I jerk Ruth back to his feet and cross the hallway soundlessly. I stop before a shite wooden door with a golden knob. "Is it it?"

"Yes." I can see John nod inside my head, "This is the room with no cameras or microphone inside."

I lean in and fish a silver kit from my pocket and start to unlock it but I soon understand that something is amiss. This door isn’t opening.

"Did you manage to unlock it?" John asks through the pod, "The guards are just around the corner."

"Hurry it up!" Ruth urges.

"This isn’t opening." I breathe, tension rising but I force it down and keep myself composed, "I can’t open the door."

"What now?" Ruth’s face drained off all colors.

"The guards are here you need to hide. Now." John says, alarmed,

My spine straightens up and I hold my gun before the lock, "I am breaking in." I state and my finger pulls the trigger.

The wood makes an audible noise and creaks open. Ruth and I jump inside and slam the door shut, careful enough not to make any sound. I lean against the door and Ruth falls to the ground. I hear footsteps crossing the room.

"Did they see us?" I ask warily.

"Seemingly no." John breathes, "But it was a close call. I am warning you guys to do something so reckless again."

"We will see." I wave it off and scan the room.

The owner is a serious alcoholic. Because there are bottles of alcohol scattered almost everywhere in the room. On the nightstand, on the table and I am sure there is a whole wardrobe. The room is empty and by the look of it...someone slept there and didn’t even clean the aftermath. There are condoms scattered across the room and the sheets are wet. The smell of sex and pheromones still floating in the air.

My stomach lurches and I press my hand against my nose and mouth to cover them. Ruth’s reaction is quite the same.

"What the fuck did they do here?" He grits out, "It’s making me sick."

"What do you see?" John asks and Ruth gives him a brief encounter of what he sees.

I meanwhile immediately get to work. I check every possible corner of the room and the bathroom. Tapping on the floor, knocking on the walls -I leave nothing. But the outcome is the same. There is no sign of any secret room or anything. There isn’t even a laptop here.

"Did you find anything?" Ruth asks.

I shake my head, "There is nothing here." I inform.

"Then we have only one option left." John states in a matter-of-fact tone, "Go for the other room."

"Where is it?" I ask as I already make a move for the exit.

"It’s downstairs," John announces a moment later and my blood boils.

"Bastard, are you crazy?" I curse, "If you just told us about that when we were downstairs then we wouldn’t have to go through all this and already have had what we needed." I am pissed and I don’t even bother to hide it.

"I am sorry..." He says nervously.

"Well, a mistake was made." Leo tries to soothe the atmosphere, "But we can try again. Don’t be mad Erwin."

I click my tongue but don’t say anything. I am fussing with anger like a bull. Ruth pats my shoulder apologetically.

"So what are we supposed to do now?" Ruth asks in my stead as I struggle to control my anger and frustration.

"Don’t take the stairs anymore, you will be detected." John pauses, "I will tell you a way. Listen carefully, the room in the question here is located just below this room. So open the window and you will find a water pipe there. Climb it down. I will disable all the cameras there and inform you if any guard is lurking there. Where you get there unlock another window there and sneak in. The door should be there too."

"Got it." I acknowledge.

"What ’got it’?!" Ruth cries.

I am already opening the window and checking out if there is anyone. When I see it’s clear I start to climb down the water pipe, swiftly and carefully.

"What the fuck?!" Ruth pops his head out of the window, "I am coming too!" He then starts to climb down too, his movements are stiff and slow.

"Erwin, there is bad news." John announces, "A guard is here."

And a guard enters the sight. I stall. The guard hasn’t seen us so I guess I can take a chance. I let go of the pipe and jump in front of the guard.

"Hello there." I grin and I punch him. Hard.

My entry was so abrupt that the poor thing didn’t even get the chance to react. His head bounces against the wall and his body drops to the ground limply. I don’t bother to unlock the window and just shoot the lock. Ruth has climbed down the pipe and sees the scene. His jaw falls to the ground but by the time he can say anything, I am already inside and shooting the door. The door opens up and my heart sinks.

Oh shit.
