Chapter 96: Chapter Eighty-One

ERWIN

Leo is late. Not only late but very late. I was with John when he called Leo since I am just a part-time intern. I am still studying for my PhD. I came here to give Steve his daily lesson. But then John said that he had tracked down the hacker’s address. This is something very important so I stayed here and waited until Leo comes. Who knew that he would be this late? I am starting to worry now.

"He is late." John blurts out as he checks his wristwatch for what seems like the hundredth time now.

"Do you think I am blind?" I tap my foot against the floorboard impatiently. "I can see that he is late. You don’t have to add additional details."

"Why are you in a bad mood?" John scoffs.

"I...I just don’t feel right about all of this." My head falls back and I rub my face exasperatedly.

"Don’t feel right about what?" John asks.

"Don’t ask about dumb shit, John." I snip bitterly, "I sometimes get the feeling that you are incredibly dumb."

John opens his mouth to answer but the doorbell stops him. "Let me check." He rises from the couch and strides toward the door.

Leo’s airy voice pours into my ears and I feel a sudden relief and affection wash over me. "I am sorry. I dozed off a little."

"You don’t have to be." The voices start to get closer alongside the light footsteps.

"Erwin?" Leo blinks as he enters the living space. "What are you doing here?" His voice is of astonishment and confusion.

I grin and approach him. I hug his waist and smooch at his soft rosy cheek. He is so beautiful that I could stare at him for the rest of my life. "I just happened to be here when he found out about the stalker."

"Oh." Leo smiles mildly and my eyes sparkle, my heart stirs. I pounce on him and smooch at his cheek so urgently as if the world is ending tomorrow.

"You are so clingy..." John wrinkle his nose as if infuriated.

I scrunch my nose too, "As if Ruth is any less than me."

"Okay, okay now, don’t start to fight." Leo holds up a palm in the air, "Let’s get to the work first."

"You are right." I rub my cheek against his as if I am some sort of kitten, "My Leo is always right~"

"Fuck Erwin." John spits, "I don’t know how Leo tolerates you. Anyway" -he turns his attention to Leo- "Do you want something to drink? Like coffee, tea or juice, anything?"

"No, I am fine." Leo pauses a little, "A glass of water if you please." He seems somewhat nervous. I wonder why.

"Okay, I have got you." John is already making his way to the kitchen, "Get seated first."

Leo and I get seated but for some reason, he is not looking quite right. He looks a little pale too. As I am about to ask him John enters the room, holding a glass of water. He passes the glass to Leo and gets seated across him. Leo chugs the water down in one go and sets the glass on the table

"Let’s directly get to work first." He pulls out a little familiar pen drive out of his pocket and places it on the small coffee table before us then slowly pushes it toward Leo. I raise an eyebrow, "The tracks of the IP address were quickly removed after we plugged the pen drive but thankfully it wasn’t too late and I managed to recover some of the information that can be beneficial."

"So do you know who the hacker is?" Leo asks, his eyes are filled with curiosity.

"Partly." John shrugs, "I only have his address."

"So we can just call the police and do the trick," Leo says suggestively.

"I am not quite sure about that." I chime in, "We don’t have sufficient information to just barge into some random people’s house with police. We need evidence."

"And it won’t be easy." John says pointedly, "The address I have is of a highly secured private property. Even the police will have difficulty to enter there without warrant let alone sneak in and gather the information we need."

And something clicks in the three of our minds almost at the same time. We look at each other and say out loud in sync, "We will sneak in!"

And the three of us pause and look at each other. "Who will sneak in?" Leo asks with extra emphasis, looking between John and me.

And this is the problem. Who will sneak in? And after a moment of contemplating Leo and John’s head darts in my direction, staring at me hard.

"What?" My eyes widen as I feel the train slowly reach the peak, "Why are you looking at me?"

***

"Because you will be the one who will sneak into that mansion." John clarifies and I see the train tipping over the edge to a free fall.

"Huh?" I blurt out in complete disbelief, "But why me?"

"Because you are perfectly suited for this job." Leo looks hopeful.

"Why?" I exclaim, clearly reluctant to admit that they have a point.

"It’s obvious idiot." John looks like he is a five-year-old boy and he has just got a new toy to entertain himself with, "You are sneaky and a bastard!"

"Was it supposed to be a compliment?" I raise an eyebrow, I can taste lemon on the tip of my tongue.

"Of course, it was!" John is almost rocking in his seat, "See, you are intelligent and you can do things perfectly. The same goes for crimes! You can even commit a murder and get away with it with the help of your as sharp as a blade-like mind! So if you sneak in even Interpol won’t be able to catch you! "

Little does he know that I have already committed a murder and have gotten away with it.

"He is right, Erwin!" Leo chimes in with John, his eyes are sparkling with...thrill? "They won’t be able to find even a hair of yours!"

"And what if I get caught?" I fold my arms over my chest, a frown wrinkling my forehead "As you said earlier the security there is hella tight. So how am I supposed to slip through? They will catch me anyway. Don’t talk like an idiot when you guys know everything." I scoff and roll my eyes.

"You know what there is a thin line between being an idiot and a genius and you use that line as a fucking jumping rope," John says in dismay. "When will I come in handy? I will clear your way and lead you."

"And even if you get caught," Leo starts matter-of-factly, "I have enough money to get you out." He winks playfully.

"See!" John exclaims, "Leo is on my side too. Now you gotta do it."

I stare at both of their faces and then sigh defeatedly.

"Yes!" John and Leo exclaim in unison.

I sigh again as I recall the events that transpired last night. We are currently hiding behind a big tree tank in the forest that surrounds the house we will infiltrate in a minute.

According to John’s research, this mansion belongs to a mob boss. I am just calculating the percentage of failure we will have to deal with when we get inside. I usually research and collect as much as information I can get my hands on before doing something this risky. But I didn’t have the time to do so since this was very abrupt and I had no time to prepare properly.

I have absolutely no idea what kind of danger we will face once we get inside. But I am pretty sure that if we get caught in an off chance then that mob boss will shove a bullet through both of our heads and this is the last thing in the world I want. My hand darts to my back and pulls out a gun and a silencer. Leo got me these last night from who knows where. I fit the pieces together and hold the gun in my hands firmly, my finger looming over the trigger. I am ready to shoot at any moment if I think something is amiss.

"Can you for fuck’s sake tell me why am I here instead of the hospital?" Ruth hisses to me, his hands are particularly shaking around the little cold metal grasped in his hand tightly.

And he was the only thing that was missing to dig my own grave here.

"We need you there." John’s voice fills our eardrums through the little pod we are wearing, "If Erwin switches into his ’killing-spree’ mode we need someone to handle him there."

"Why me?!" He seethes further.

"We don’t have anyone else to do that." Leo’s voice comes through this time and I breathe.

"You had an appointment today at the hospital!" Ruth says hushedly and my head darts in his direction.

"What do you mean appointment?" I frown.

"He didn’t tell you?" Ruth seems genuinely surprised.

"Let’s talk about that when you get back." Leo’s voice cuts in, "Focus on your mission now." He sounds tense but I don’t push the matter.

"Okay." I nod even though he can’t see me, "You better remember in."

"So the mission "Sneak in" starts now!" John exclaims.

What a vulgar name...
