Mage And Wolf -
Chapter 291
Chapter 291: Chapter 291
I follow Mayor Johan to the window and find that fires have broken out all over the city. That’s what I was smelling through the slightly opened window. From here we can’t see what’s causing them, the building is shielded by trees and hedges, but my sensitive ears can hear fighting in the streets.
Most of the voices don’t have the signature deep timbre of the Titans, and the only thing that could possibly outnumber the Titans here is a mass Portal opening event or a slave uprising. This building is too quiet for a slave uprising, but then, did I see any here except the pets? Even the menial staff are from the Titan Clan.
I’m staring out the window, enjoying the chaos when a communication token in my pocket blares to life. "Puppy, HELP! They’ve all gone crazy. Two of my brothers are dead, mom is missing and I’m locked in the safe room with Jacob." Mila’s voice sounds hysterical and she’s clearly not thinking things through if she called me first. Plus, when did she even have a chance to slip me a communication token?
The voice brings everyone to attention, by common courtesy they silence all tokens while in council meetings to stop the constant interruptions.
"Councilors, my apologies, but I must head home to see to my family." Mayor Johan is saying as I jump out the window and take off at a run.
Mila is actually really sweet, it would be a shame if she died here, still thinking of all other species as pets and slaves. At a run I’m far faster than the carriage was, and it will take me under a minute to get back.
"Hold on. Just stay safe in there and I’ll come get you in under a minute." I tell her through the communication token and I can hear Jacob sigh.
"Really? Aren’t you at the council chambers?"
"I was, but I’m running back now. Just relax until I come get you."
The scene at the house is chaos. The slaves are murdering anyone without a collar, even turning enraged eyes on me for half a second before turning back to the Titans. To their credit, the Titans have killed a lot of the slaves, but they simply stand back up and attack again.
After they’ve been killed once, they hold nothing back, striking hard enough to break their own bones at times. The undead are only concerned with vengeance.
I can see their collars are all glowing black with sinister energy, and it feels very familiar, like my own Domain. The maid who came to visit me and the butler are currently engaged in combat with the attacker who escaped earlier and two other Titans, stopping them from getting into the master bedroom at the top of the stairs in front of the door, but there are also others, not part of the household staff, fighting Titans all through the house.
The familiar attacker spots me coming in the door and I’m expecting him to attack, so I draw a sword from my storage. Only he doesn’t. His group breaks away from combat without a single word and flees out the window.
"What happened? Why is everyone crazy? I shout at the only two I recognize and they look at me in confusion. They don’t move as I approach, but I can see them fighting the urge to attack.
Two precise slices remove the collars from their necks and they visibly relax. "The collars are all linked so we can be tracked. There was a surge of Rage and Demonic energy through the inscription linking them, then everyone went berserk. The Madam is in her room, but I’m afraid all the children are dead."
"No, two of them live for sure. Where is the safe room?"
[Basement. Come down and lock the doors and we will give you more directions.] Jacob informs me through the token I had forgotten was active.
"We will protect the Madam, see to the others." The butler informs me.
"If that’s what you want. The same thing happened all over the city, nobody would notice if you two did away with the cruel ones." I suggest, but they look horrified. Guess that’s not an option for them.
I wander for a little bit, checking doors until I find the basement stairs. They’re crowded with undead slaves, who part before me, leaving a path to a blank wall.
"Go, find the cruel ones. These two are mine." I instruct them with my best dominant voice and they all start waking back upstairs, renewing the sounds of fighting.
None seem interested in staying so I lock the basement doors and call for the kids. "Mila, Jacob, the basement is empty now."
"You’re the best guard dog ever. You even scared away the monsters." It sounds like Mila is crying in there, but at least she’s alive.
"Let’s just wait. I’ll sit here by the door until things calm down." That calms her down to sporadic sniffles, and over the next five minutes the sounds of fighting fade from the area and I inform the kids that I will go check the situation.
I unlock the basement door to find a tense standoff currently taking place in the living room. The two Nephilim have taken up swords and they’re facing off against ten former slaves. Everyone’s collar has fallen off, likely an attempt by the council to stop the chaos, but that hasn’t totally stopped the fighting.
"I can smell at least one still alive in there. Move aside Nephilim." A large Dragonewt with Red scales insists.
"We won’t allow you to." The maids says firmly and the reptilian warrior shakes his head, preparing to attack.
"Halt. In the name of the Death God, you will not fight here." I shout, causing them all to turn and see my Royal Robes. The dragonkin among them all kneel and bow to the floor.
"As you command, High Priestess." The leader intones in a flat voice barely hiding his rage and disappointment while the others put their weapons away.
They all flee just before the Mayor and two of the council members arrive, the Mayor going directly upstairs to find his wife. She’s in the bedroom, but catatonic. There is blood everywhere, and he feeds her a healing pill before trying and failing to get answers.
The two Councilors don’t look impressed with me, both bloodied and battered. Whatever happened, they didn’t have an easy time getting here.
"What did you do?" The one whose Domain I clashed with earlier snarls, taking a step forward.
"It’s not what I did, but what you did." I smile back, motioning grandly to the destruction.
"And what a show it was."
