Mage And Wolf
Chapter 269

Chapter 269: Chapter 269

After a bit of prodding, Three Seventeen gives up the location of the portal they came through. That’s all I needed to know, so she is left to her mate, and the few pack warriors Alpha Conway sends to guard her. She might be part of the pack by default now, but she’s still a brainwashed Cultist who came here to attack their guests.

I’m going to head over to the portal alone, after informing Karl and Elder Song of the location, but Elder Song and Lelou both insist they’re coming with me. Lelou is a bit concerned for my safety, and Elder Song says he has never seen the nuke spell in action and doesn’t intend to miss it this time. I’m not as talented with it as Karl is, being a physical cultivator and not a proper mage, but I’m am capable of using it, and the Librarian is hoping that seeing it in person will be enough to inspire him, as he’s currently stuck in his cultivation.

We are all strong enough we could simply collapse the portal, it’s not particularly hard once you know the trick. Even Lala can do it now that she’s able to manipulate external energy well enough.

But we have warned the Cultists repeatedly that it’s a bad idea to attack us, and stupidity should be painful.

Elder Song uses a travel spell learned from the Divine Transfer and appears next to us in an instant, taking in the destruction and renovation of the pack compound with great interest.

"Interesting use of both technology and magic to create a liveable and functional space. I sense very few surviving technological devices, but all the essential functions have been replicated anyhow." He says, getting distracted and walking towards the new buildings.

"Alpha Conway, that is Elder Song, The Librarian that the young lady was speaking of. Don’t worry about him, he’s always like that around new things, he cultivates Knowledge as part of his technique. But on the topic of the Divine Transfer, would you please have her mate give that girl a new name to replace whatever identity number she’s currently using as a name?"

The Alpha’s eyes glaze over a second as he talks to his pack through the mind link, then he nods. "Good idea, all set. They’ll pick a new name as part of her deprogramming. We’ve got a wolf who specializes in it, she used to work with child services, helping kids rescued from cults, gangs, and other bad situations."

"Song, I’m going to the portal now. Are you coming, or inspecting the buildings?" I call over to the old man who is now on the roof of the singles building, inspecting something that caught his attention.

"I’m coming, you impatient woman. The buildings will still be here when I get back. Now, chop chop, let’s get moving."

To my surprise, the portal seems to be unguarded when we arrive, not a sign of the Divine Transfer as if it were just like any other portal that had opened on the planet. They’re everywhere these days, so it’s honestly the best camouflage they could have picked.

Without inside information, we’d have searched for days to get the right one. The attackers made multiple loops around the area, crossing over and confusing their scent trail before attacking so they were less likely to be tracked back and caught off guard.

"Let’s go through first. We’ll see what’s here and pick a target. I don’t know what trick Karl used to make the fusion reaction unstable and chain react like that, so this will be a much more simple technique." I say quietly, in case anyone on the other side is listening.

"I’ll go first, I’m hard to trap. You follow a few seconds behind." Elder Song agrees.

There’s no warning of danger after he steps through, and he doesn’t immediately return, so I assume it’s safe to follow, finding myself standing in a small room atop a guard tower with Elder Song and two dead guards. At first, it looks like we’re inside a prison, but all I can see are children and a few young adults, most of them nonhuman.

"Do you think they made an intermediate stop, coming here last and hoping that we’d blindly attack and kill a load of innocents?" I ask and Loulou frowns.

"Look down there in the northeast corner. Ragged silk, bright colors. I think they rounded up the local population here as an internment camp. Because those are a white Dragon Junior Priestess and her entourage. I’ll go say hello, you two stay hidden in case there are more guards about."

I hope there are. These Cultists are beginning to annoy me and one single battle wasn’t enough. I can feel some sort of restriction on me still though, not as strong as the one created by Earth, possibly man-made.

"Elder Song, what is that restriction? I can’t identify it."

"It prevents the activation of external energy, but it’s also layered with a restriction from the world that makes it nearly impossible to advance to immortality, much like the planet that we sent the teachers from the Shadowed Blade Sect to."

Yes, come to think of it, that is exactly the feeling. Not that I won’t be able to use my full power once we’re away from this place, but that I’ve defied the natural order of the planet. It’s not the same world, though it’s clearly in the Mortal Plane and the energy quality is similarly terrible, giving a sense of familiarity.

Lelou returns in just a minute, entering the guard tower without challenge, and brings us news of this world.

"This isn’t a prison, at least not really. The Divine Transfer has been working to purge this world of nonhumans since they arrived here a few years ago. This is a refugee camp overseen by the local human authorities, who believe in the Divine Transfer’s message and wanted the non humans sent off world instead of killed. The two guards here were the only ones left since the cultivation restriction locks everyone to Foundation Realm abilities."

"It is an impressive Inscription, even most of my abilities are locked away. I could still open a portal home from up here where the spell is weakened though." Elder Song agrees.

I flex my hand, kneading a paperweight from the desk like a stress ball while I plan out how we’re going to repay the Divine Transfer for their latest but of idiocy when a great plan occurs to me.

"You said the Divine Transfer is still winning over the humans right? How about we use their tactics against them?" I grin and Elder Song gets an excited look while Lelou sighs.

"Just no bombing the children."
