Mage And Wolf -
Chapter 268
Chapter 268: Chapter 268
The next to fall is the cultivator to my right, being controlled by my energy attacks. With the intensity doubled now that his counterpart on my left has fallen, he completely failed to notice the werewolf coming from the back and tearing his throat out.
That leaves the last two in a very bad way. They can’t run, they can win and none of their friends are in any position to help them. The pack might not be individually as strong as these cultivators are, but they’re well trained at working together and they’ve done an excellent job of surrounding and isolating the attackers.
Without someone to watch their backs, the Divine Transfer Cultists are being mercilessly harassed, only one cultivator other than the ones I’m fighting remains standing, though another is alive but unconscious. As I focus attacks to keep these two occupied, the werewolves have begun surrounding them, nipping at their legs and jumping back out of retaliation range.
The cultivators can’t turn to properly face them, as that puts their backs to me, meaning instant death, but they can’t ignore them, or they’ll have their limbs ripped off before they know it. The panic is setting in now, and it’s only a matter of time until they mess up. No need to over extend and risk injury, no matter how fast I heal. I just need to wait them out.
As expected, they falter, giving in to their panic and try to flee. Splitting to send one in each direction they bolt, abandoning their companion. The first is restrained by a Dragon strike to the leg and ripped apart by werewolves, while the other I fell with a thrown sword to the back of the skull, not wanting to put in the effort to chase him.
In the meantime the werewolves have picked off the last enemy and are beginning to shift back to their human forms and go to get cleaned up from the mud and blood of combat.
There is one still alive, and I’m going to go tie up the loose ends when one of the warrior Wolves snarls at me, standing protectively over the fallen cultivator.
"Found your mate, did you?" I ask him with a smile and he growls at my proximity.
"Think about who you’re growling at pup, I’m not going to steal your mate. In fact, even if I wasn’t mated already, she’s not my type."
"I think he’s more worried about you killing her than anything else." Alpha Conway says, walking over behind me.
"He’s got a point there. I rarely let any of the Cultists live. How about this, I’ll question her, no physical injuries, gentle questioning, and then when we determine she’s safe to be around the pack you two lovebirds can be together?" I say, offering a compromise.
The werewolf shifts back into his human form, which leaves him standing with one leg on either side of his mate, who has regained consciousness and is staring up at him in shock, clearly feeling the bond between them, even though she came here with an anti non human Cult.
"Hello, young cultivator of the Divine Transfer. I’m fairly certain that you know who I am and what I’m capable of, yes?" She nods vigorously, looking at me with undisguised terror in her eyes.
"Tell me your name, and how many more of your people are here in this world." I ask in a more gentle tone.
I can see she wants to rant and rave, tell me off and flee, but she keeps looking back to her mate. The bond with werewolves is strong, their mates are immediately drawn to each other and see the best in their partner. Either she didn’t know about it, or the bond is just hitting her extra hard.
"Wolf, put some pants on and come hold your mate so she can focus on the questions." I say and the young man happily complies, sitting behind her and wrapping his arms around the cultivator. He’s easily three times her size, but other than that, they’re quite similar. Same round face shape, same deeply tanned skin tone, with black eyes and hair. As the Moon Goddess intended, they fit together just right.
"My name is Three Seventeen. From Transfer Planet forty six. The only ones sent to this planet should have been our team. After losing so many senior members in your attack on our military planet, the top brass doesn’t want our high level cultivators too concentrated on one planet, they can’t afford another big loss." She says reluctantly.
"How long will it be until they send more people after me and Karl?" I prod for more information.
"The Oracle says attacking The Black Lord only leads to more deaths, so they won’t target him. But they will likely send another group after you starting two weeks after they realize we’ve failed. They will need time to do another divining to select a vulnerable moment to attack."
"They thought this was a vulnerable moment?" Alpha Conway asks dubiously.
"The Librarian and the Black Lord are both gone. The Caretaker and the Acolyte were both busy with the children and unlikely to intervene until it was too late. They didn’t mention a huge enchanted wall though, that is very strange." Most likely because the wall is new, and the decision to make it hadn’t been made when the Oracle had their vision.
"Why are they so bent on attacking her? You mentioned an oracle, is it because of a prophesy?" Her mate asks.
"Yes and no. The Oracle says that we will inevitably come into conflict with her group. That will lead to events that interfere with the grand goal of transferring all of humanity into the Divine Planes. If they’re left alone, they will form a new Pantheon of Dark Gods and entirely upset the balance, which will leave us trapped in the Mortal Planes. At least that’s what we were informed."
Interesting. This entire mess is because an oracle determined that it would happen, possibly seeing the outcome of their own actions and instigating the conflict. As for stopping their goal of entering the Divine Planes, the Divine Council is doing a good job of that, though they have in the past solicited our help, so the Divine Transfer might have a point. It’s just that they’re only seeing bits and pieces of the big picture and acting on limited information.
The question is, how do you stop a cult from doing things they think will protect the Cult?
