Chapter 37: Chapter 37

Sebastian’s mood turned sour instantly.

He was so happy for a minute there, thinking Winter could stay by his side, sharing their desk as CEO. But she decided to do something far away from him.

"I don’t think the finance department needs any help. They’re doing their job just fine," Sebastian said. "If you don’t want to work with me, then at least help Iris with her crazy workload. How about you become my private secretary?"

"Private secretary?" Winter raised a brow. "You know I own this company, right?"

"You don’t need to repeat it a hundred times, I know!" Sebastian replied. "I just think that, since you are so suspicious of me, maybe you should work near me so you’ll know what I am doing every day."

It was actually a good idea, since she knew that Sebastian would betray her eventually. She disliked that she had to see Sebastian’s face every day, but staying close to him meant he couldn’t do anything too damaging, like seizing her fortune.

’And that would limit Camilla’s influence as well,’ Winter thought.

She considered it for a moment, but before she could decide, there was a knock at the door.

"Come in," Winter said, and the door opened from outside.

Nova stood at the door and felt she had come at the wrong time. She politely asked Winter and Sebastian, "Did I disturb something here?"

"Not really," Winter replied curtly. "Are you done with the interview?"

"Yes, and I’m here with her," Nova said before stepping aside, revealing the young woman who had been hiding behind her. "Go on and tell them about your new job."

Cindy gulped. She slowly walked into the CEO’s office and jolted when Nova closed the door, leaving her with Winter and Sebastian.

She didn’t dare to look directly at the CEO, so she kept her head lowered the whole time. It was her first time facing a truly important figure in a big company, and her nervousness showed.

"G—Good morning, Sir. My name is Cindy Hazard. I’m hired as an intern here, and Mrs. Wilson assigned me to work as a secretary intern in this office," Cindy said. She glanced at Winter and murmured, "I’m also Winter—I mean, Madam Winter Saenz’s sister."

Winter smiled at her sister but was waiting for Sebastian’s response.

She tried her hardest to dismiss the idea of Cindy being Sebastian’s mistress in her past life, but she still couldn’t shake up her uneasy feeling.

She turned her head toward Sebastian and felt a thump in her heart.

Sebastian was staring at Cindy in a daze, as if her presence really shaken him to the core. There was no trace of hostility or even indifference in his eyes.

Instead, it was filled with... unknown emotions that Winter couldn’t describe, but she guessed it was probably infatuation.

Winter bit her lower lip, trying to control her emotions because Sebastian’s reaction was exactly what she feared.

’No, there is no way, right? Maybe Sebastian is just shocked to see Cindy. Maybe it’s her red hair? Maybe red hair is his preference,’ Winter tried to convince herself.

She didn’t care if Sebastian had cheated on her with anyone else because her heart was already dead to him, but she didn’t want Cindy—of all people in this world—to be the one who betray her.

"Raise your head proudly, Cindy. Let your new boss see your face," Winter said with a smile, but only God knew the raging volcano in her heart right now.

Cindy raised her head slowly and was equally stunned when she saw Sebastian Saenz. However, it was easy for Winter to read Cindy’s mind. It was obvious that Cindy was awestruck by Sebastian’s handsomeness, like a typical young woman in her early twenties.

Winter clenched her skirt until the veins in her hands popped. She was so angry and disappointed that she couldn’t even process the complicated emotions in her heart.

’So, even in this life, they are still attracted to each other. I guess that answers my suspicion: Cindy was Sebastian’s mistress in my previous life,’ Winter thought, wanting to laugh at the realization that everyone around her had betrayed her, even the little sister she had raised.

She cleared her throat, determined not to let her voice sound shaky and whiny in front of these two pathetic bastards. She had to keep her head up and maintain her dignity no matter what!

"What do you think of her, Sebastian?" Winter asked.

"What do I think of... her?" Sebastian repeated the question, taking a long time for him to find an answer. "She’s fine... I guess."

"Fine, huh? That’s an interesting answer. I didn’t know you could be so modest," Winter said sarcastically. But Sebastian was too caught up with whatever he had in his mind that he didn’t catch the sarcasm.

"And what about you, Cindy? What do you think of your new boss?" Winter asked. "Don’t you think he’s very handsome? You weren’t at the wedding, and I’m dying to know your opinion."

"Ah—uhm..." Cindy’s cheeks reddened, and she replied in a meek, almost coquettish voice, "V—Very handsome. Yes. You have a good taste, sis."

"I sure do," Winter laughed mirthlessly. She got up and grabbed her bag. "Well, how about you two have a little talk first? You will work together on top of being in-laws, after all."

Sebastian snapped out of his daze the moment he saw Winter leaving, "Where are you going, Winter? You should be helping me!"

"Why should I help? You have a new, cute little secretary here," Winter said while patting Cindy’s shoulder. "I’m sure she can be of use to you."

"N—No, I—"

"I will work hard, sis!" Cindy said confidently, without an ounce of awareness in her.

"Good, Sebastian will be very satisfied with your service," Winter sneered. "I’ll go to the finance department office now. I need to talk with the finance director about my company’s budget."

Sebastian got up from his chair and walked around his desk, ready to reach Winter to stop his wife, "Winter, we—!"

"Spare me your words, Sebastian. You have your second secretary here, go tell her if you need anything," Winter said before she turned around and left, ignoring Sebastian who kept calling her name.
