Chapter 36: Chapter 36

"I’ll send her to the CEO’s office once I finish the formal interview," Nova assured. She raised her brow teasingly at Winter and said, "Ah, newlyweds, they really can’t stay away from each other for too long. You should go now, Winter. I know you miss Mr. Saenz."

Winter tried her best not to show any bitterness in front of Nova. She excused herself and left Nova’s office.

Cindy’s eyes followed Winter’s back until she left the room. Once Winter was gone, she asked Nova, "Ma’am, I wonder what kind of person Mr. Saenz is."

"Why would you ask? You should have seen him at their wedding, right?" Nova asked back.

"W—Well, I was hospitalized a few days ago, so I couldn’t attend the wedding," Cindy lied. "I’m just curious. Since I haven’t met him in real life, I’m wondering if he has been kind to my sister."

"Hmm, they’ve just been married, so I’m not sure," Nova hummed. "But if you’re that worried about them, why don’t you work closely with them instead? I have just the right position for you."

Winter waited until the elevator reached the CEO’s office on the top floor. When the elevator door opened, she saw Iris sitting at her desk, drinking coffee while staring at the computer screen with heavy bags under her eyes.

"Are you alright, Iris?" Winter asked as she approached the secretary’s desk.

Iris lifted her head and smiled thinly at Winter. "Well, I’m breathing, so I guess I’m alright."

"What happened? You look horrible today."

"Ugh, it’s your husband," Iris complained. "Mr. Saenz is developing many projects. I mean, it’s good that we’re active since everything came to a halt after Aiden’s death, but that doesn’t mean I’m not stressed out."

Though Winter disliked Sebastian, she had to admit that he was a talented leader for the company, so she didn’t try to stop him this time.

She knew he was working to ensure the company’s stability after Aiden’s death, and it was best not to do anything against him, because Winter couldn’t do the same. She had a talent and skill as an accounting manager, but not a CEO.

Since their interests aligned for now, she offered something else, "I can talk to Nova about hiring a second secretary to lighten your workload."

"I’ve been asking for that since this morning. I hope Nova can hire a second secretary as soon as possible because this workload isn’t something one person should handle."

As Winter and Iris talked about the company’s situation, the VIP elevator door was opened, and they saw Sebastian, wearing a dark green.

Sebastian felt a bit awkward being stared at by Winter in the office. If she had looked at him like that at home, he would have started asking questions, but since they were in the office, he had to maintain some degree of dignity.

"What are you doing here?" Sebastian asked. "Do you need something?"

"I just came today to check on my employees, including you, Sebastian Saenz," Winter said.

Sebastian glanced at Iris, who immediately lowered her head. The atmosphere became tense. He returned his gaze to Winter and whispered, "Not in here, Winter. Let’s talk inside."

Winter didn’t want to distract Iris any further, so she nodded and followed Sebastian to the CEO’s office. She sat on the sofa, staring at Sebastian, who quickly busied himself with a stack of documents on his desk.

"You see that I’m busy with my workload, Winter. The company was getting shaky before I took the role as the CEO, so now you know that I’m working hard, not just living off your inheritance," Sebastian explained, his eyes still glued to the document in his hand. "If you don’t have anything else to do, you should go home—or maybe to a restaurant, since you haven’t eaten anything since last night."

Winter didn’t intend to argue with Sebastian this time, mostly because she was exhausted this morning.

Besides, she knew he was doing his best to keep the company afloat, so she needed to cooperate to save the company that Aiden had left her.

"I heard from Iris that you signed many projects, and she’s been overworked because of it," Winter mentioned.

"It can’t be helped. If I don’t start working on them, I’d have to do a massive layoff, and I know you’d be angry if I did that," Sebastian said.

Honestly, he already knew what would happen next. He had done the same thing in his past life, and Goldmine Realty became one of America’s biggest real estate companies in just two years.

He was much more relaxed now but still acted as if he was stressed out to make it believable for Winter.

Hopefully, seeing how stressed he was, she would slowly soften her heart toward him.

"Then I guess I can help in some way," Winter offered. "I have experience working as an accounting manager in a mid-sized construction company, after all."

Sebastian finally lifted his head, looking at Winter with eyes full of hope. "Then you should help me here. Oh, you don’t understand how hard it is for me, Winter. I’ve been having severe headaches every day because of the amount of work I have to do."

Sebastian completed his act by massaging his shoulder and temple as if he were truly exhausted.

"I can do an audit by working closely with the finance department, specifically the accounting department," Winter said. "I’ll observe and make sure that the company’s finances are managed perfectly to help you execute those projects."

"Finance department?" Sebastian frowned. "Why would you need to go there? Just stay here with me. I’ll ask Iris to prepare a second chair so you can sit with me at this desk."

"I’m sure you can handle this just fine, Sebastian," Winter said nonchalantly. She already knew his capabilities and didn’t doubt his judgment as CEO. "I was an accounting manager with a decade of experience before I married Aiden and became a full-time homemaker. I am more used to working in the finance department."
