Madam Wants To Divorce Her Second Husband -
Chapter 31
Chapter 31: Chapter 31
Sebastian already knew Winter wouldn’t believe his claim, even though he was telling the truth.
He had always been popular, both in high school and university. He was athletic, good-looking, and extremely intelligent.
His mother raised him with an iron hand. She would beat him up if he didn’t get an A or A+ in all his subjects in school.
She would also berate Sebastian if he lost in any competition, whether that competition was the ones Sebastian wanted to join or not.
Sebastian remembered how Camilla slapped him and didn’t give him any food for the whole day just because he got a B+ on a math test in primary school.
So he spent the rest of the night studying while being starved.
He also remembered how he cried because of the hunger and the swelling on his cheek. But in the end, he toughened up, trying his best not to cry because it would give him puffy eyes that would make his mother angrier.
-
’You either become the best or die, Sebastian Saenz. You have no use for me if you’re not smart!’ Camilla yelled at seven-year-old Sebastian. ’Remember, your Mom is the one suffering the most here. I’ve worked day and night to feed you. Do you want to disappoint your pitiful mother?!’
The little Sebastian could only shake his head, rubbing his cheek while holding back his tears.
-
Sebastian closed his eyes.
He resented his mother for being so cruel towards him when he was young.
He endured many beatings, sometimes unprovoked, but his mother always told him that his absent father was an irresponsible, stupid, cowardly bastard who ran away the moment Camilla became pregnant. So, Sebastian had to be constantly beaten to make sure he didn’t end up like his father.
’Ah, why am I thinking about bitter memories?’ Sebastian pondered. He collected himself and smiled at Winter. "Why don’t you try it? I’m sure you’ll like what I made."
Winter sneered, "Why don’t you eat it first? You made it while I was asleep, so I don’t know what you put in the batter."
Sebastian’s lips twitched. "I’m not going to poison my wife, Winter."
"I’ll believe your claim after you eat those pancakes," Winter insisted.
Sebastian clicked his tongue. He pinched the pancake and took a bite while staring at Winter.
Five seconds passed, and nothing happened.
"Do you believe me now?"
"E—Eat the berries too. Who knows, you might’ve injected the berries with poison," Winter accused.
Sebastian rolled his eyes. He took one berry and ate it without hesitation.
Again, five seconds passed, and nothing happened, but Winter still stared at him with suspicion.
"What? Are you going to accuse me of poisoning the syrup instead? Or maybe honey?" Sebastian sneered. "I think you watched too much crime drama."
Winter’s suspicion faltered as she began to doubt herself.
She knew she might sound too paranoid, but in her previous life, Camilla had threatened to poison her food if she dared to get pregnant with Sebastian’s child. So Winter never told her mother-in-law when she got pregnant with Sebastian’s child.
’Maybe I’m way too harsh on Sebastian. He might be indifferent towards me, but he never threatened me like that...’
Winter had a second thought and finally lowered her guard. "Alright, fine. I believe you won’t poison me."
"Of course, I won’t! You’re my wife! What kind of crazy man would kill his own wife?!"
"The ones who coveted her wealth?"
Sebastian was stunned, realizing he had dug his grave just now.
"W—well, I’m not that type of husband!" Sebastian tried to defend himself, though he sounded guilty since he coveted her wealth in their past lives. "S—So, do you want me to make a pancake for you? I can make a new one since I already ate this one."
Winter stared at Sebastian, who was acting strangely again. She remembered how indifferent he usually was.
’Could it be that my harsh words to him yesterday actually made him feel guilty?’ Winter pondered. But she quickly dismissed the thought. ’Wait, you shouldn’t fall for this cheap trick, Winter. You know how often he acts nice to trick you into thinking you two really have a spark.’
Winter recalled how Sebastian kept up this nice husband charade for about half a year before revealing his true nature as a cold-hearted bastard.
Winter’s heart cooled. She took a deep breath to calm down after realizing she was about to make the same mistake.
She grinned and replied, "Fine, make me two stacks of pancakes with honey on top and strawberries on the side. Oh, and a cup of coffee."
Sebastian’s face brightened, but he tried to hide his excitement to avoid making her suspicious. He was genuinely happy that Winter finally lowered her guard against him.
"Then I’ll make it right now. You like Liberica coffee beans, right? Oh, but it might be too strong for your weak stomach, so I’ll add a bit of milk," Sebastian mumbled as he prepared the batter to make pancakes for his wife.
Winter frowned, becoming suspicious. "How do you know my favorite? I’ve never told you I like Liberica coffee."
Sebastian’s body stiffened.
He was so excited that he forgot to filter what came out of his mouth.
He knew many things about Winter since they lived together in their past lives. He might act indifferent towards her, even downright hating her because of his mother’s influence, but he always paid attention to what Winter ate and did.
He didn’t know why he did that at the time, justifying it as a habit of observing his surroundings.
Only after Winter’s death did he realize he had been paying attention to her because he was in love.
He had always been in love with Winter Saenz.
He was just denying it because he wanted to be a good son for his mother.
"B—Because Liberica coffee is my favorite too, and you know I only like the best," Sebastian claimed.
"Really?"
"Yeah, of course, that’s why I’m offering it to you," Sebastian said, suppressing his nervousness and trying to sound convincing.
