Madam Wants To Divorce Her Second Husband -
Chapter 27
Chapter 27: Chapter 27
Sebastian gulped as he had to admit his failure. Despite his knowledge of their previous life, he couldn’t recall ever meeting with Winter’s mother.
"Well, that’s normal because you’ve never met her before," Winter said calmly, though her tone carried disdain. "Camilla didn’t allow me to invite my relatives, including my mother, to our wedding. I couldn’t even invite friends. So the guests who attended our wedding were all yours and your mother’s, not mine."
"That’s—" Sebastian was speechless. He hadn’t known about this because he didn’t care who attended the wedding. Initially, he had married Winter not out of love, but necessity.
So, he saw their worthless wedding as just another obligation to officially make Winter his wife and take over her assets.
He had assumed Winter and Camilla would split the guests 50:50. He thought the guests he couldn’t recognize at the wedding were from the bride’s side of the family.
It turned out they were all Camilla’s guests.
"I went to my mother’s house because she went on a hunger strike. She was heartbroken because I didn’t invite her to the wedding. My sister said our old mother barely ate anything for a week. Imagine what would’ve happened if I hadn’t gone to clear things up immediately," Winter smiled bitterly, knowing exactly what had happened to her mother. She stared at Sebastian dead in the eye and said, "She would be dead."
Sebastian’s hand that was holding the wine bottle trembled. He didn’t know if that might have been the case in his previous life because he had never seen Winter with her mother.
He vividly remembered how she stayed all day in the mansion after they consummated their marriage after the wedding reception.
’Winter probably knows that her mother must’ve died in our previous life from hunger,’ Sebastian guessed. ’I killed Winter’s mother because I allowed Camilla to intimidate her...’
Guilt started to consume Sebastian. He couldn’t utter a single word. He simply stared back at Winter with a lost gaze.
He parted his lips, ready to apologize, but the word stuck in his throat.
Winter chuckled, seeing Sebastian look as if he had just killed someone.
"What’s with your stupid look? My mother is fine now," Winter said. "She’s old, but she’s very healthy and active. She’ll be fine for a long time as long as I come for a visit more often."
"Can I... come with you sometimes?" Sebastian asked carefully. But then he cursed himself after saying that, fearing his behavior change might make Winter suspicious of his real identity.
But he couldn’t hold it back.
He simply wanted to know his mother-in-law and apologize for neglecting Winter, even if Winter’s mother didn’t know what truly happened.
"Oh, don’t bother asking," Winter said as she grabbed one cookie and took a bite. "The answer is obvious."
Sebastian felt a glimpse of hope but then remembered he was talking to his wife, who hated him.
"Is that a no?"
"Yep, that’s a no," Winter replied curtly.
"Why? I have the right to meet with my mother-in-law."
"So you can give Camilla permission to hurt my mother?" Winter sneered. "You don’t need to act kind in front of me. I prefer you to show your real self, that cruel bastard who married me for money. It’s better that way."
Winter carried the cookie jar with her into the master bedroom and closed the door, leaving Sebastian alone near the kitchen, still trying to process her rejection.
Sebastian sighed.
He put down the wine bottle because he didn’t need it anymore, then went to the guest bedroom with his luggage.
He sat on the bed, staring around the guest room, and realized it was only half the size of the master bedroom.
"So Winter slept in this room for two years straight..." Sebastian murmured.
Back then, Camilla had given Winter an ultimatum: Winter needed to stay in the guest bedroom if she wanted to stay in the penthouse.
Sebastian only watched at that time, and Winter, feeling intimidated, agreed to Camilla’s request.
Sebastian was barely home during the first few months after their marriage because the company needed restructuring after Aiden’s death to avoid bankruptcy. So he didn’t know what Camilla did to Winter during that time.
Once he had more free time, his mother told him that she disliked living in the penthouse and gave the master bedroom to Sebastian instead, but he still wouldn’t allow Winter to return to the master bedroom.
So, the arrangement stayed the same, Winter in the guest room, while Sebastian got the master bedroom.
-
’Remember not to let that woman into the master bedroom, got it?’ Camilla warned him at that time. ’You’re the owner of this penthouse; you need to have the best treatment.’
-
"Ah, you’re so stupid, Sebastian," Sebastian blamed himself as he realized how cold he had been towards Winter, who had never done anything wrong to him. "So why did I hate her back then?"
That question lingered in his mind, but he didn’t have an answer. He simply resented Winter for no reason.
Sebastian lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling absentmindedly as he realized that Winter was on a mission to fix everything she did wrong back then, including not standing up for herself, which indirectly led to her mother’s death.
"And divorcing me is part of that mission," Sebastian’s lips thinned, deep in thought. He considered letting go of his wife so she could live a good life without him and Camilla around.
But his heart burned with fury at the thought of Winter being embraced by another man.
He didn’t care if he had to betray his own mother.
He also didn’t mind if Winter sought revenge against everyone who had wronged her, including himself.
"But I can’t let you go, Winter," Sebastian said. "You can beat me, hurt me, betray me. But please, don’t leave me."
Sebastian closed his eyes, already exhausted.
The bed was a little uncomfortable, but he knew he had to endure it as this was a small price he had to pay to stay by his wife’s side.
