Chapter 43: Leaving the apartment
Chapter 43: Leaving the apartment
Liam parked his white Lamborghini at a far distance from the apartment building where Neil had sent for him. He didn’t know why his friend had asked him to dress like a commoner but he had done just that. Liam had even done more than he was asked to do just to be safe, he had brought some ordinary looking attires on the way and wore them after making a few holes on them to make him look like some homeless beggar.
Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, Liam looked nothing like a beggar. His tall, muscular physique, neatly trimmed crew cut hair with faded sides, and striking facial features made him stand out amongst the crowd in whispering way. Moreover, apart from being a soldier, and as the only son of one of the wealthiest CEOs in the country, Liam had been raised in wealth. His attempt to blend in as a commoner did nothing to hide his wealthy appearance, one look at his face, a person would know he wasn’t from a place like whispering way.
"Shit, why are they all staring at me like they’ve never seen a humble commoner before?" He muttered to himself as he walked down the street that lead to the apartment building. He decided to just wear the baseball cap in his hand to shadow his face. Though he had taken many disguises in the past, this was his first time trying to pretend to be a commoner, which he could tell was going bad.
Liam hoped Neil didn’t ask him to disguise because he wanted to catch some criminals in whispering way. Besides that could be the only reason his friend would ask him to go through this trouble of parking his car in the distance before walking down here to get him. Neil would never go through any trouble if it has nothing to do with catching the Da Kroll lackeys, and right now Liam was a hundred percent sure that all this was because of his mission.
Unknown to him that his friend was only going through this trouble just to keep someone’s reputation clean.
Even though Neil could barely stand up on his own, he managed to stand when Mia told him that the hallways were cleared. He was aware that she didn’t want to be seen with him, thus after he’d worn back his jacket from last night, which she had washed for him in the morning, he straightened up and glanced at her. She stood beside him as if intending to help him if he would lose his balance and fall, her expression looked anxious and she was hugging her midriff out of habit.
"Are you sure you will be alright walking out on your own?" She asked worriedly as she looked up at him. Even though Mia didn’t want to be seen with him, she had offered to help him out of the apartment building, but he had blankly refused saying he would manage on his own. And as she watched him preparing to leave, she suddenly felt like he shouldn’t go. He had only been in her room for a day, but it felt like she had been sharing the room with him forever and was used to him.
He offered her a curt nod of his head as if to show his gratitude before he steadily walked out of the apartment and closed the door behind him. Neil’s limbs were shaking with each step he took to walk out, but he didn’t stop and kept walking until he was far away from the Harrison apartment room, and as he was walking down the stairs, he suddenly bumped into someone as his legs threatened to give away underneath him.
"Watch where you’re going." Owen remarked in annoyance as he looked up at the man who bumped into him and caused him to drop the mixed flavored Ice cream he’d gotten for Mia from her favorite ice cream shop. He glared up at the unfamiliar man with annoyance, but meeting his cold silver eyes, Owen dared not to open his mouth to speak again. And without even bothering to apologise, the sliver eyed man continued to walk down the stairs like some drunken man, who couldn’t walk properly.
Owen glanced down at the spilled ice cream and snacks, he muttered a curse as he realized he wouldn’t be able to take back anything for Mia because of that man, who had bumped into him. He couldn’t help but wonder where the man was coming from because he didn’t look like he even belonged to their neighborhood.
He glanced back and noticed the man was being approached by another man he’d noticed down stairs earlier when he was coming inside. The man had looked suspicious to him like a thief waiting for his target, but it seemed he was waiting for this other man who bumped into him, because he walked towards him and wrapped an arm around him to support the sliver eyed man.
Owen watched as they walked away from the building, he didn’t know why he felt strange when the sliver eyed man glanced at him with such emotionless eyes, he had felt a shiver down his spine for a moment and was even unable to demand him to pay for the ice cream. Remembering the man’s eyes, he also recalled how Mia was obsessed with gray eyes.
Who did the man come to visit in the apartment building? No doubt he was coming from Julie’s room because only that girl knew how to bring different strange men into the building.
Owen shrugged and walked up the stairs. Upon reaching the hallway leading to the Harrison’s apartment, he spotted Mia walking down the hallway. Her surprise at his presence was evident as she jumped slightly. Owen’s expression turned into a frown as he approached her, questioning, "Where are you headed?"
Mia, who was actually going to ensure that Mr. Ice cube had safely made his way outside without any balance issues, swiftly put on a smile and responded, "I was just on my way to assist Mom at her eatery." It wasn’t entirely false, as she intended to visit her mother after checking on the man.
Owen gently pressed his finger against Mia’s forehead to gauge her temperature. Taken aback, Mia slapped his hand away and frowned, "What do you think you’re doing?" She pursed her lips and glanced up at him.
"I was trying to check if you’re still sick. Your temperature feels normal now." He had been worried when she told him that she wasn’t feeling well In the afternoon, but he was relieved to know that she had no fever and didn’t look sick now.
Mia, who had forgotten about her lie had almost asked him what sickness but quickly amended the words that came from her mouth, "Yes, I feel all right now. What’s that on your shirt?" She asked when she noticed the pink stain on his shirt.
"It’s ice cream. I bought them for you but some idiot strange eyed man bumped into me on the stairs and I dropped it."
Mia felt her heart skip a beat as she realized the man he was referring to must have been Mr. Ice cube. Did he lose his balance and bumped into Owen? Did he make it to his friend without any trouble? She had noticed how blood had stained the makeshift bandage she’d tied around him yesterday when she helped him into his jacket earlier. She didn’t know why she wanted so badly to check up on him but then she couldn’t do so now with Owen here, who she was sure would follow her if she was to go outside to take a fake stroll just to know if he’d made it to his friend’s car.
"What’s wrong?" Owen asked as he noticed she had spaced out.
"Nothing. I was just wondering what ice cream flavor you’d bought and how clumsy the man was to bump into you." She smiled faintly, but deep down she made a mental note to call Mr. Ice cube and check up on him later. She had his number now anyway.

Immediately Liam approached Neil, Neil lost his balance and almost fell but Liam was quick to get to him and support him. He had used every bit of his strength to walk down the stairs and when he’d bumped into the man on the stairs, it took every muscle in his body to stay on his feet. Apart from the pill’s side effects, the wound on his side was hurting like hell and needed a proper treatment.
"Damnit, Liam, why did you have to park your car so far away from the building." Neil gritted his teeth as they had been walking down the street for some minutes now but yet he couldn’t see any signs of his friend’s white Lamborghini in sight. He had even asked him to dress like the normal folks in whispering way, but his friend had gone as far as to dress like a homeless beggar with torn clothes and a weird baseball cap that only made him standout from the crowd, who kept turning their heads to glance at them suspiciously.
"I had no idea that I would be coming here to help you because you had been shot. I parked my car far away because I thought I was coming here to assist you in catching a criminal in the apartment building," Liam whispered under his breath so that the people passing by wouldn’t hear him. He had been surprised to see that his friend couldn’t walk because of the gunshot wound, and he hadn’t even informed Liam about it in the morning so that he could pick him up and take him home for treatment.
"Did you at least inform Davina about your wound?" Liam asked as they finally spotted the car he had parked in a secluded corner.
"Yes, she’s in my condo right now." Neil replied curtly, finally relieved to spot the white car.
"Thank goodness you were clever enough to do that before I arrived. Davina will surely nurse you back to health in no time," Liam said with a mischievous smile, knowing how their doctor felt about Neil and how oblivious his friend had been to her feelings all these years. If there could ever be a woman on this earth who Liam thought matched well with his typhoon of a friend, then it was doctor Davina.
