Chapter 127: Brie’s Request

Two years had passed and Nina was doing a great job on her work. The company’s reputation blossomed after the interview with Luke Wilson.

She became the favorite of Carter Media and also her colleagues. Everyone knew how hard she worked for the company to get back on its feet.

Andrew was proud and happy for her, but there were things that was being forgotten because of her blooming career.

"Is your mom going to be there?" Lucas asked Brie.

There was a math contest and Brie had been chosen as the representative of Golden Oak’s Elementary Department.

Brie shook her head. "I didn’t tell her."

Lucas felt her sadness from the tone of her voice.

"Why? She will be happy if she knows."

Brie sighed. "Mom’s too busy. I don’t want to be a burden. Besides, you’re here to watch me, right?"

Lucas frowned. "No. I’m here because I’m a contestant."

Brie pouted. "But the science contest is done an hour ago."

"Fine. I’m here because Uncle Andrew asked me to stay."

Brie’s heart was a mixture of disappointment and happiness. She was disappointed because her dad couldn’t come, but she was happy that Lucas was there to support her.

They were both representatives of the elementary department. Lucas joined the science contest and won first. While she joined the math contest and also ended first.

"Why the long face?" Lucas asked.

"Mom’s too busy with work."

Lucas clicked his tongue. "Our parents are busy because they want to give us a better future. You’ll understand when you grow older and have kids."

Brie smiled at Lucas. "Will you marry me when we grow up?"

Lucas’ eyes widened. "What? Are you crazy? I don’t even like you."

She pouted. "I’m not crazy. If you become my husband then I don’t have to work and leave the kids alone. You’re rich."

"You’re a gold digger."

"I’m not. My family is rich and I can make a fortune even without leaving home. I’m smart."

Lucas wanted to laugh. This girl’s mind set was different. He had received tons of confessions recently, but Brie’s was by far–the worst.

"Come on! Just say you’ll marry me!"

Brie wouldn’t stop pestering him. She’s good at annoying him so he had no choice, but to agree.

"Fine! But as I said, I don’t like you. And I will never like you."

Brie smiled. "It’s fine. We have a lifetime together so I got plenty of time to make you like me."

"Whatever. Let’s just go. I’ll treat you to dinner."

"Oh! I want to eat pasta!"

At home, Brie went straight to bed. She didn’t say goodnight to her mother because Nina was busy with work.

Andrew’s phone rang and he was surprised to see Lucas’ number on the screen.

"What do you want, brat?"

Lucas chuckled. "What are you doing?"

Andrew frowned. "Working. Why?"

"Still working at home? How about Aunt Nina."

"Same. What’s this about?"

"If you have all the time working for Brie’s future, why don’t you spare some time with her? I mean spend a day with your daughter."

Andrew didn’t expect to be scolded by a twelye year old.

"By the way, she won first place."

He felt guilty that he didn’t witness his daughter’s achievement. When he checked her bedroom, she was already sleeping. He noticed the medal on the table and took it.

"Brie won first place in her math contest."

Nina stopped typing on her laptop. "Really? That’s great. I’ll buy some gifts for her." She said then started typing again.

Andrew frowned. He walked toward Nina and closed her laptop.

"We need to talk about Brie. Lucas called and he said Brie was sad because we missed to watch her today. He took her to dinner. We didn’t even realize she was already here and went straight to bed."

Nina kept her silence. She was guilty because she was too busy with her work and didn’t get the chance to spend time with Brie.

"I think you should stop working." Andrew suggested.

"What? Why would I quit? I can just make some time for Brie and still work." She reasoned.

Andrew sighed deeply. "I understand that you love your job, but isn’t two years enough? I agreed because I was hoping that you won’t forget your obligation with Brie."

Nina hissed. "Am the only one who forgot? You also missed her activities in school. You’re always too busy to take us out."

Andrew was taken aback. "Oh, now it’s my fault!"

"Mom, Dad, are you fighting?"

They were both startled when Brie walked inside. She was already in her pajamas and in her hand was her favorite teddy bear.

Nina rushed over her daughter. "No, baby. We’re just talking."

"I heard you yelling at each other. Mom, Dad don’t fight because of me. I promise I’m okay. Look, I even put on my pajamas after taking a bath." Brie sobbed.

Nina’s heart broke. She didn’t realize that Brie was trying very hard to stand on her own.

Andrew patted her head. "Hey, I’m sorry for yelling. And I’m sorry I missed your contest. It’s not your fault. You’ve been a very good girl. It’s daddy and mommy’s fault."

Nina nodded while wiping the tears from her daughter’s cheeks.

"Baby, you should tell us what’s bothering you. If you want to spend time with me, just tell me, okay? We’re not perfect parents but from now on, I’ll spend more time with you. Tell us, what do you want to do?"

"I want you to get married."

Andrew and Nina glanced at each other. They were living in the same roof for more than two years and had been engaged ever since. But because they were both busy, they didn’t think about the wedding.

"My classmates said that my last name isn’t the same with daddy, so I’m an illegitimate child. They said you’re living together, but not married so I can’t use the his last name."

Andrew was shocked. How could someone tell her daughter about those stuff?

"Then tell them we’re getting married in a week." Andrew said with gritted teeth.
