Chapter 121: Job Fair
She looked at herself in the mirror to check her appearance. She wore a white collared top, black slacks, and black pointed shoes. Her brown wavy hair was ponytailed and she just put on some light makeup.
She heard a few knocks before Brie entered the bedroom.
"Mommy, where are you going?" The little girl asked.
Her heart felt delighted seeing Brie in her pajamas. She walked toward her daughter and carried her on the bed.
"I’ll try to look for a job so Mommy can buy your favorite toys." She said.
"But Dad is rich. You don’t need to work. Daddy said he will buy anything I want."
She chuckled. "I know but Mommy wants to buy something for you and Daddy with my own money. If I bought something using Daddy’s money, then it is useless right?"
Brie nodded. "Yeah, it’s stu–"
The little girl stopped when Nina glared at her.
"Sorry." Brie murmured.
"Remember not to say that word. It’s not nice for a young lady like you to say something like that."
"Yes, mommy."
Nina smiled again and kissed her daughter on the forehead.
"How’s your first day in school?" She asked.
"Mommy, I think Alora doesn’t like me. And Lucas, too." Brie said sadly.
Nina was surprised and didn’t know what to say for a moment. She could never blame the Wilson twins, especially Alira. The girl was traumatized after the incident in Flousia and was forced to live far away from Caden.
She sighed. "How can you say that?"
"Because Alira never talked to me. And Lucas always yells at me."
Nina wiped the tears from her daughter’s eyes. Her heart broke seeing her lonely.
"Honey, you can’t expect them to like you because you just met. Try your best to be their friend and I’m sure you will eventually get close to them. But don’t worry, I will talk to the twins for you." She said to comfort Brie.
The little girl shook her head. " No, mommy. I don’t want them to think that I complain about them. But pray for me, Mommy! I will make them like me."
Nina was glad that Brie stayed strong and positive about everything. She hugged her tightly while letting out a deep sigh.
"I know you can do it. You are a nice girl and they will love you, I’m sure of that."
A few minutes passed, and Brie fell asleep again. She felt a mixture of sadness and hope for Brie.
She left the house and went to Northbay City Mall. Andrew assigned three bodyguards for her. They weren’t the ones she had in Paris so she was wondering about what happened to those men.
When they arrived at the job fair, the three men tried to distance themselves from her. Maybe Andrew told them not to get too close while staying focused and alert.
She felt an excitement seeing the companies she liked. Those from Andrew’s list were also there.
"Let me try this one first." She murmured.
She approached the first company on her list. It was a small trucking company that started seven years ago. Based on their website, they deliver products from other retail companies. As of now, the company’s clients are around twenty.
"Hi! Good morning. I would like to apply for an open position in your company." She said with a bright smile on her face.
A woman wearing a white pencil-cut dress stared at her from head to toe. She took her resume and read it quietly. Then she glanced at her again.
"You’re Katarina Sommers? The ex-wife of Mr.Andrew Cross?" The woman raised her eyebrow.
Nina gulped. "I was the ex-wife and the future wife."
The woman felt a tension in Nina’s voice. She stopped reading her resume and forced a smile on her.
"I’m sorry, but I don’t think you are qualified for the position."
She didn’t ask the reason for the rejection because she already knew what it was. She tried the second and the third one, but she was rejected even before asking her about what she could do for the company.
"Nina, there are other companies and I’m sure someone would hire you because you are fit for the job." She said to herself.
Even though she felt like lying to herself, she still had hope left in her heart. She tried the next three companies on her list but all of them rejected her.
She heard two of the interviewers giggling while looking at her resume.
"You’re only experience was serving customers. We’re not a restaurant or a diner." A man from an accounting firm said.
Her heart felt broken when ten of the companies rejected her application. She rushed to the washroom and cried.
"How rude!" She sobbed.
She knew it was not that easy to get a job, especially for someone like her. She could call Andrew and ask for help, but she couldn’t. Her tears kept falling thinking of Andrew’s disappointment.
"Don’t give up, Nina! Think of Brie." She whispered.
She was fixing her makeup when a young woman entered the washroom.
"You’re Nina Cross?" The woman in thick glasses asked.
Her chest tightened. "W–Who are you?"
The woman chuckled when she stepped backward.
"Relax! My name is Lory Carter. I’m from Carter Media. I was just wondering if you’re interested in working with us."
She was surprised, but she still couldn’t let her guard down.
"I’m sorry if I look suspicious. I know you because I’m from the media. I was also surprised to see you here. I know it’s a bit stupid to accept our invitation since you’re all over the news, but you can check us out. We’re in booth number 35. I’ll wait for you." The woman smiled and left.
She quickly checked the internet and searched Carter Media.
"They just started two years ago. And their employees are just twenty-two? No wonder they needed more people."
She didn’t see anything suspicious about the company and besides, Andrew would definitely make a background check on them.
She took a deep breath and went out to look for Carter Media.
