Chapter 298: Promises ( 1 )

Yan Yuling’s words delighted both Jin Rongsan and Jin Zhiwen. They had always hoped she would use their family name but refrained from pressuring her.

"Are you certain, Yuling?" Jin Zhiwen asked, his voice soft but eager.

Nodding at her father, she replied, "Father, don’t you want me to?"

"Of course, I do!" Jin Zhiwen exclaimed.

Feng Zhexuan wrapped an arm around his wife’s shoulders and said with a smile, "Father, leave this matter to me."

Jin Zhiwen smiled and nodded, "Alright."

Turning to her husband, Yan Yuling smiled, "Thank you, husband."

Placing his hand on her baby bump, Feng Zhexuan kissed her forehead and replied, "I’m your husband. There is no need to thank me."

A few days passed in the blink of an eye, leaving Yan Yuling feeling like a lone plank adrift on a vast sea—lost and confused.

Mourning Gu Jianci’s death consumed her, and she often sat in a daze, blaming herself for what had happened to him. Without her husband’s support and encouragement, she might have long since succumbed to depression.

At this moment, she sat on the balcony, gazing at the blue sky. Yet, the scene of her friend dying to save her kept replaying in her mind. Her heart ached, and sadness engulfed her, but no tears came. The suffocating emotions left her panicked and breathless.

Just as she felt the onset of another panic attack, a movement in her belly startled her. Her breath hitched, and she froze. A few seconds later, she exhaled sharply and took a deep breath. Lowering her gaze, she noticed her baby’s tiny feet moving beneath her skin.

At 21 weeks pregnant, feeling fetal movements was normal. Usually, the movements were faint and painless, but this time, the stronger sensation jolted her as if her baby was reminding her of the life growing inside her.

Cradling her belly, Yan Yuling choked back a sob as tears finally spilled from her eyes. She closed them and whispered, "Jianci, I’m sorry—I’m so sorry."

All the emotions weighing on her heart and body surged forth, leaving her breathless with grief. Her baby kept moving, as if offering comfort through the fetal movements.

She didn’t know how long she had been crying when she suddenly felt herself enveloped in a warm embrace. The familiar scent of the man holding her surprised yet soothed her. Burying her face in his chest, she sobbed, "Jianci, I’m sorry. "

The man sighed softly and spoke with a note of helplessness, "Yuling, it’s not your fault. I never blamed you."

"B-but, because of me—"

"No, it wasn’t because of you," he said firmly while gently wiping her tears.

When Yan Yuling looked up, she saw his familiar, gentle smile. There was no anger, no resentment—only relief and quiet expectation.

He reached out and placed a hand on her baby bump while saying, "Yuling, I promised to protect you for the rest of my life. I will keep that promise. Let go of the blame and move forward."

As he spoke, his figure grew fainter, like mist dissolving in the wind. Panicked, Yan Yuling clung to him and pleaded, "Jianci—can’t you stay?"

He patted her head and whispered, "We will meet again—I promise."

His voice faded, and she heard someone calling her anxiously.

"...Wife! Wife!"

Opening her eyes, Yan Yuling saw her husband’s pale, frightened face. She blinked and said in confusion, "Husband?"

Feng Zhexuan let out a heavy sigh of relief and pulled her into his arms. His body trembled from the fear of finding her lying motionless in the chair with tears streaming down her sleeping face.

After regaining his composure, he looked at her pale, thin face and asked gently, "Wife, was it a nightmare again? Should we ask Grandpa to check on you?"

It took Yan Yuling a moment to understand his concern. She was aware of her fragile mental state and its potential risks to her and the baby, but she wasn’t ready to talk about it yet.

Shaking her head, she whispered, "Husband, I’m sorry for worrying you."

Feng Zhexuan forced a smile and replied, "Why apologize? You have done nothing wrong."

After a pause, he added, "Wife, let’s go traveling. You have mentioned wanting to visit the beach before. I will take two weeks off and go with you."

She looked at him uncertainly and asked, "Aren’t you busy with work? Can you really take a vacation?"

He smiled warmly and nodded, "I have hired so many talented people to handle the company. If I can’t take a break, what’s the point of paying them so much?"

After a moment of thought, Yan Yuling nodded, "Okay."

Feng Zhexuan was happy hearing his wife’s words and asked, "I will arrange everything. How about we leave tomorrow?"

"Mn."

"Wife, I haven’t eaten yet. Will you join me for a meal?" he asked again.

Yan Yuling’s mind wandered back to her dream, and she rubbed her belly absentmindedly. She didn’t know if the dream was a hopeless wish or a glimpse of the future. But she couldn’t let him worry—not now, not ever—after his sacrifice.

After a pause, she nodded and said softly, "Husband, I want to eat sweet and sour ribs."

As soon as she finished her words, Feng Zhexuan agreed readily, "I will have the chef prepare it."

After their brief conversation, Feng Zhexuan carried his wife to the bed and went to fetch a towel and a basin of hot water. He carefully wiped her body and helped her change into clean clothes.

When he was done, he kissed her forehead and said, "Rest for now. I will call you when the food is ready."

Yan Yuling nodded and lay down on the bed. "Mn," she murmured softly.

As he left the room, Feng Zhexuan glanced at his wife’s damp clothes on his hands and let out a long, heavy sigh.

She had been plagued by nightmares almost every time she fell asleep since that day. Even with Jin Rongsan’s help, her mental state remained fragile. If this continued, it could pose serious risks during childbirth.
