Chapter 299: Promises ( 2 )
Despite his deep concern, there was little he could do. The only way for her to heal was for her to confront her guilt and overcome the emotional barrier on her own.
For now, all he could do was stay by her side and ensure she was never alone or in harm’s way. This was why he had decided to return to Haicheng and stay at his grandfather’s house.
After informing the chef, Feng Zhexuan went about his tasks, while Yan Yuling remained in bed, staring at the ceiling. After a long internal struggle, she finally sat up and retrieved Gu Jianci’s diary from the drawer.
Leaning on the pillow, she caressed the cover of the diary for a long time before summoning the courage to open it. The first page featured a picture of them taken during their trip to Huasan.
A small smile formed on her lips as she noticed the hand-drawn heart encircling their faces. She had known about his feelings for a long time but had pretended ignorance, unwilling to risk their friendship. She had thought that after her marriage, he would move on. But unexpectedly—
Before her tears could fall, she took several deep breaths to calm herself. Once composed, she began flipping through the pages. The diary contained no words, only dates and photographs.
Each page chronicled their journey together, from the moment they met to their last trip before he went abroad.
As she gazed at the photos, her eyes turned red and watery. When she reached the final page, she expected to see another picture of the two of them. But when she flipped the page, she was stunned.
Instead of her picture with Gu Jianci, it was a photograph of her and Feng Zhexuan from behind. In the photo, she was smiling while holding Feng Zhexuan’s hand. He, in turn, was gazing at her with unmistakable love in his eyes.
Behind them, an arm extended toward her, holding a bouquet of heliotrope flowers. Beneath the photo was Gu Jianci’s familiar handwriting, strong yet gentle.
"Yuling, even if the person walking beside you is not me, I wish you a lifetime of happiness.
I will always watch over you, even if you never look back at me.
Thank you for bringing light into my dark world.
I love you."
Her fingers lingered on the image of the heliotrope flowers in the photo, and she remembered Gu Jianci once telling her that instead of red roses, he would give heliotropes to the woman he loved.
When she had asked why, he explained that heliotropes symbolize eternal love and unwavering devotion. He would give his all to the one he loved and love only her for his entire life.
Now, she finally understood why he had smiled at her even as he sacrificed his life. Tears fell onto the diary, leaving marks of her quiet farewell.
Clutching the diary to her chest, she whispered, "Jianci, I will live well—for both of us. I will take care of myself and travel the world, so when we meet again, I can tell you about it all. Thank you."
Outside the room, Feng Zhexuan leaned against the door with his eyes closed. His fists clenched tightly as he struggled to suppress the jealousy and heartache swirling within him.
’Gu Jianci, you are truly cunning,’ he thought bitterly.
How could he compete with someone who was no longer alive? In this life, he will never be able to get his wife’s wholeheartedness again.
Lost in his thoughts, he was startled when the door suddenly opened, causing him to stumble backward in shock.
Yan Yuling gasped when she saw him falling. Without thinking, she reached out to steady him, "Be careful!"
The sound of her voice snapped him back to reality. Twisting his body, Feng Zhexuan avoided falling into her. His heart pounded with fear as he quickly checked on her after he regained his foothold.
Gripping her shoulders, he asked anxiously, "Wife, are you alright? Did I scare you?"
Yan Yuling’s face had turned pale from fright. For a moment, she thought he had fainted or was ill. Only when she saw that he was unharmed did she let out a relieved sigh and scolded him.
"Why were you leaning against the door? Don’t you know how dangerous that is? What if you hurt yourself?" she asked while glaring at him.
Feng Zhexuan was stunned by her outburst. It had been months since she had scolded him or complained about anything. For the first time in so long, she seemed truly alive.
"Wife, you are finally looking at me," he said, his voice trembling with emotion and his eyes brimming with unshed tears.
Seeing her tall husband on the verge of crying like a child, Yan Yuling sighed and gently touched his face, "Husband, I won’t shut you out again. I’m really okay now."
"Wife, promise me you will never hide from me again. I can’t live without you," Feng Zhexuan pleaded earnestly.
Yan Yuling nodded, her teary eyes softening as she said, "I promise. I will never do it again. Husband, I love you. Thank you for never giving up on me."
Hearing her words, Feng Zhexuan hugged her tightly and whispered, "Wife, thank you for coming back to me. I love you."
Together, they took their first steps toward healing from the tragedy. Feng Zhexuan remained vigilant, staying by her side like an inseparable shadow even after his wife showed signs of recovery from her depression.
During her final trimester, he became more clingy than ever, constantly ensuring her well-being like a naggy mother-in-law. After consulting with her doctor, they decided to postpone their planned trip, as her condition was unsuitable for long travel.
Three months passed like a breeze, and she was now closer to her delivery day. Fearing that his wife might suddenly give birth to their baby, Feng Zhexuan insisted on having her hospitalized earlier.
Sitting on the hospital bed in the VVIP ward, Yan Yuling was eating an apple while Feng Zhexuan massaged her swollen feet. Both of them were busy with their own things while watching the period drama.
