Little Sorcerer, Divine Doctor -
Chapter 70 - 5: Eccentric Doctor
Chapter 70: Chapter 5: Eccentric Doctor
Since she had come to Yujing, and it being the old home of her father Yun Canghai, Yun Sheng planned to settle down locally first.
But to settle down, she first needed to obtain a medical certificate issued by a doctor.
However, the doctor in front of her almost starved her to death, such a person was definitely unreliable.
And charging five silver coins for a certificate? That was a total rip-off.
Without saying much, Yun Sheng turned around and walked away.
"Hey, young lady, don’t go, how about I give you a discount, four and a half silver coins?" The skinny man, seeing his easy meal ticket flying away, became anxious, "This is the lowest price in the whole city, you wouldn’t even be able to enter other places."
Yun Sheng paused in her tracks.
Yujing City, right under the Emperor’s feet, was extremely valuable land, and those capable of opening a clinic in the city were no ordinary people; the cost of their treatment was unthinkable.
Presently dressed in tattered clothes, and having spent nearly all her money due to Yun Canghai’s unconsciousness, Yun Sheng could just about manage five silver coins, but in other clinics, she feared she would be immediately kicked out.
"Don’t believe me? I, as a Bell Doctor, guarantee with my qualification, once you leave this place, you won’t find another like it," worried Yun Sheng wouldn’t believe him, the man took out a token and handed it to Yun Sheng.
That token was almost identical to the "Imperial Physician" token she had seen in Taishang Town before, except it wasn’t made of gold but from Purple Iron, and had a bell engraved on it.
Bell Doctor, indicates a person certified by Medicine Emperor Pavilion at a beginner level, possessing qualifications for practicing medicine and alchemy, able to practice and benefit people in a town.
Wuji Continent medical hierarchy: Medicine Gathering Boy, Medicine Man, Pharmacist, Bell Doctor, Four-direction Wanderer Doctor, Imperial Physician, Great National Doctor, Medical Marquis, Supreme Medical Buddha.
The doctor in front of her was actually a Bell Doctor?
"Four and a half silver coins is still too expensive," Yun Sheng frowned, bargaining.
"It’s not expensive. What if I told you that for four and a half silver coins, I can not only issue you a certificate but also help you maintain the life of your unconscious relative without using any medicinal herbs?" As soon as the man finished speaking, Yun Sheng suddenly turned around, looking at him defensively.
"How do you know I have an unconscious relative who needs medicinal herbs to sustain their life?" Yun Sheng, who was cautious and had suffered humiliation at the General Mansion, had not mentioned her father’s condition since entering the clinic.
"I smelled it. You have at least three or four different kinds of medicinal herb scents on you, all expensive ones. Seeing your simple attire, you’re not from a wealthy family. Thus, it must be because you have a seriously ill, unconscious relative that you must use expensive herbs to sustain their life, am I right?" The man said confidently, his nose capable of distinguishing various herbs even in an Emperor’s pharmacy.
"Four and a half silver coins, deal. But first, tell me, what method could replace the herbs?" As Yun Sheng had just arrived in Yujing City and needed to settle by renting a house, she would definitely need a lot of money, and she was already out of money, so she had to find a way to earn money quickly.
"Water Magic Array, Cloud Dream Ice Sleep," the man spoke, and suddenly a wand the size of chopsticks appeared in his hand, chanting from his mouth.
A blue Magic Array with flowing blue mists in the middle, the mists extremely cold, immediately froze a nearby table and chairs.
A person in the state of Cloud Dream Ice Sleep will have all bodily functions minimized to the lowest, and accordingly, the consumption of life will also be minimized to one percent of the unconscious state, naturally eliminating the dependence on medicinal herbs.
"You are also a Mage? How come you are?" Yun Sheng was even more astounded to find that this Bell Doctor was also a Mage.
Being both a Doctor and a Mage, how could he have nearly starved to death in his own clinic.
"Hehe, it’s precisely because I am both a Mage and a Doctor that I ended up in this situation. Ancient Medical Skills and Magic Pharmacy have been incompatible for years; someone like me doesn’t fit on either side. There’s no time to waste, let me go with you to the city gate," the man said with a helpless expression.
He picked up the medicine box and headed to the city gate with Yun Sheng.
By the time Yun Sheng returned, it was nearly dusk, and Little Black was still waiting by the carriage.
"It’s you again, Doctor Fan!" The city guards were clearly familiar with the man. In fact, because of the cost, nearly nine out of ten commoners who needed a city entry certificate to enter Yujing City were certified by Doctor Fan, which is why the guards recognized him instantly.
"Young lady, be careful. This man is not trustworthy and has even caused death during treatment, hence he is nicknamed Ghost Doctor. If you ask him for a certificate, make sure you don’t let him treat any illness," a kind-hearted city guard warned Yun Sheng.
Doctor Fan, acting as if he hadn’t heard, lifted the carriage curtain to look inside.
Although he had guessed that Yun Sheng had an unconscious relative, he didn’t know what illness the person had. He needed to assess the condition before issuing the certificate.
Upon checking, Doctor Fan furrowed his brows.
"What’s the matter? Is it an epidemic?" A city guard asked.
"No, let them in," Doctor Fan said thoughtfully, glancing at Yun Sheng. He took out a certificate he had already prepared, signed it, and gave it to the city guard.
Once the certificate was issued, the city guard let Yun Sheng and the carriage into the city.
As dusk approached, the sun casts its last glimmers, and Yun Sheng, holding the reins beside Little Black, appeared solitary on the street corner.
"Young lady, find a place to stay first. If you need to perform Cloud Dream Ice Sleep for your father, you’ll have to give me five more silver coins. But let me tell you, one session of Cloud Dream Ice Sleep only lasts for half a month," Doctor Fan was quite calculating; he had already figured out that Yun Sheng did not know Water Magic, so if she needed someone to perform the Cloud Dream Ice Sleep, she would have to rely on him.
"I have nowhere to go. The inns in the city are too expensive, we can’t afford to stay," Yun Sheng said, looking at the evening hues of Yujing, her brows furrowed in thought.
The capital was bustling, yet amidst the crowd, every face was cold and indifferent.
Only she could protect her father.
"There are two vacant rooms behind my clinic, but the rent is ten silver coins a month," Doctor Fan could tell that Yun Sheng really didn’t have much money, but he wasn’t too generous to offer free help.
"I owe you twenty silver coins in total. I can work as a Medicine Gathering Boy at your clinic to compensate for the rent and the costs of Cloud Dream Ice Sleep," Yun Sheng immediately said, and despite the city guard’s low assessment of Doctor Fan, a doctor who could guess her father’s illness from their brief encounter surely couldn’t be as useless as the rumors suggested.
"The salary of a Medicine Gathering Boy is at most five silver coins," Doctor Fan shook his head.
"In your clinic, do you have fresh Blood Stopping Flower, Moon Crow Fruit, or Dead Butterfly Vine? If you have these three medicinal herbs, I’m sure I can gather the remaining fifteen silver coins by the end of this month," Yun Sheng, though young, spoke with a natural authority that made Doctor Fan believe her words.
"Alright, only for a month. If you can’t gather the money within a month, don’t blame me for kicking you, your father, and your dog out," Doctor Fan nodded and led Yun Sheng towards the clinic.
