Chapter 71: Chapter 6 Setting Up a Medicine Stall
After returning to the clinic again, Yun Sheng noticed that there was a courtyard behind the small clinic.
The courtyard was not large, with a well, a few acres of overgrown medicine field, and several rooms. One of them was occupied by Doctor Fan himself, one was a pharmacy, one was a kitchen, and the remaining two were vacant.
Yun Sheng tidied up and arranged for her father, Yun Canghai, to be settled in the room facing the sunrise. The last one became her and Little Black’s new abode.
"Including the cost for two instances of Cloud Dream Ice Sleep, the total is twenty silver coins. Here is the IOU; remember to pay up by the end of the month. Also, the medicine-gathering boy is responsible for providing three meals a day, but your dog’s food is not included. You need to rise at the sixth hour every morning, sort the clinic’s medicinal herbs, chop and dry them. You have half an hour of rest at noon, and the clinic closes at the sixth hour of evening. You cannot be lazy. If I catch you slacking off, it will cost you," Doctor Fan was very calculating, not giving Yun Sheng any chance to take advantage of him.
Yun Sheng saw that the clinic did not do much business, but to her surprise, she found that the pharmacy was stocked with a complete range of medicinal herbs, including many seeds of these herbs.
Upon asking, she discovered that Doctor Fan would venture out to gather herbs when he had nothing else to do, and the seeds he collected from some herbs were just thrown into the pharmacy.
"Doctor Fan, back in my hometown, we also had several acres of medicine field. Could you lend me some of the medicinal herb seeds from the storeroom? I would plant them in the medicine field. If the herbs mature, we can split the profits fifty-fifty," Yun Sheng mentioned, seeing the wasted medicine field and proposing to take charge of it.
Doctor Fan was dubious but figured that keeping the seeds in the pharmacy would only make them moldy. If Yun Sheng really could grow something, it wouldn’t be too bad.
Early next morning, at the fourth hour when roosters crowed, Yun Sheng was already up meditating in seclusion.
For mages, the best times for meditation are at dawn and dusk. After a session, Yun Sheng felt refreshed and full of spirit.
She stepped out of her room to check on Yun Canghai.
A blue magic array flickered with ice-blue light, and within the array, her father Yun Canghai was covered in a layer of ice-blue frost.
"Father, one day, I will find a way to save you," Yun Sheng swore in her heart. She prepared breakfast as usual.
Then she loosened the soil for the medicine field and took advantage of the predawn light to plant the chosen seeds.
Doctor Fan’s medical skills aside, his ability to discern medicinal herbs was excellent. The seeds he had collected were all mid-grade herbs.
On Wuji Continent, medicinal herbs are categorized from the most common low-grade, mid-grade, high-grade, to top-grade. The Blood Stopping Flower from Banana Leaf Village, for example, is a mere fan grade, inexpensive and only capable of being processed into basic low-grade medicines.
Mid-grade medicinal herbs are much pricier than mortal-grade herbs and can be used to produce mid-grade medicines.
Having made Hemostatic Agent and Meditation Water before, Yun Sheng had acquired certain pharmaceutical skills. She planned to start developing mid-grade finished medicines once she successfully cultivated the mid-grade herbs.
In her previous life, since her parents died early and her grandfather was often busy with their small medical clinic, she had always been quite self-sufficient.
One of the reasons she stayed in Yujing City was because of her father Yun Canghai’s illness, but another reason was that she wanted to attend the Magic Academy in Yujing City.
Although Yun Sheng had acquired the Five Elements Magic Soul, Yun Canghai had become vegetative before he could teach her systematic basic magic.
She hoped to gain more opportunities to learn basic magic by attending the Magic Academy and become a true mage. That would inevitably require a considerable sum for tuition and living expenses, so Yun Sheng had to earn more money.
When Doctor Fan woke up early in the morning and stepped outside, he smelled the aroma of food and saw the courtyard neat and orderly, with the herbs neatly spread in the sunlight.
"Hmm, the little girl is quite nimble with her hands after all. Shame, no matter how quick she is, she can’t save her father. The Beast Blood Curse of the Summoning Court..." Doctor Fan mused deeply as he walked into the clinic.
On this day, not a single patient came.
Doctor Fan spent most of his time dozing off at the counter.
By around noon, Yun Sheng had half an hour of free time. She informed Doctor Fan and then left the medical hall, rushing to the busiest street in the heart of Yujing City, darting through the streets.
The sun was blazing, and Yun Sheng’s face turned red from her hurried run.
The hemostatic agents were made by Yun Sheng back in Banana Leaf Village, and the three bottles of Qi Gathering Powder and Meditation Water were also concocted along the way.
Yun Sheng planned to sell these finished medicines to raise some money.
Seeing that there wasn’t much time left, Yun Sheng could only pick up the medicine bottles and chose to enter a medical hall located at the very north end of the street.
"Selling medicine? Do you have the qualification of a Medicine Man?" The doctor at the medical hall saw that Yun Sheng was just a little girl and couldn’t help but be skeptical.
"I was a Medicine Gathering Boy at the Magic Temple; these medicines were all taught to me by the local Pharmacist," Yun Sheng presented a bottle of hemostatic agent, hopeful.
The Pharmacist took the medicine bottle, sniffed it, and his expression changed slightly, but he did not show it on his face, "This hemostatic agent is too inferior, I can take it, but at most five copper coins."
Yun Sheng’s face flushed with frustration, and she took back the bottles of medicine, "Not selling."
She would rather not sell them than allow others to belittle her medicine.
She only had half an hour for her lunch break, and she had hurried over and spent some time, so there wasn’t much time left.
As Yun Sheng was walking on the street with the medicine bottles, she noticed in the corner of an adjacent street, several small vendors were setting up rouge and makeup stalls, shouting from time to time.
Initially, she wanted to sell the medicines to medical hall, but now it seemed that the bigger the store, the more unscrupulous they were.
Yun Sheng no longer trusted medical halls and pharmacies, deciding it would be better to set up a street vendor stall herself and sell the medicine for whatever amount it could fetch.
Having made up her mind, Yun Sheng found a clean, shady spot and quickly displayed her hemostatic agents and three bottles of Meditation Water.
The price for Yun Sheng’s hemostatic agents was nine copper coins, Qi Gathering Powder was fifteen copper coins, and Meditation Water was twenty copper coins, all of which were much cheaper than the market price.
This street was the liveliest in Yujing City, with many passersby, including some martial artists and mages.
Yun Sheng was young, and not a doctor; occasionally a few passersby would hear that she was selling medicine, and they all shook their heads and walked away.
After waiting for about 15 minutes, an exceptionally tall "woman" walked by from the front.
"Miss, would you like to buy some medicine?" Yun Sheng called out to the "woman."
The corner of the "woman"’s mouth twitched, and she turned around, cursing: "Who said I’m a woman, which of your eyes saw me as a woman!"
