Chapter 777: Chapter 777: The Terrible ’Power Behind the Scenes’ (Two-in-One Mega Chapter for Monthly Tickets)
"It’s snowing again, this damned weather."
The SUV’s heater hummed loudly, and Bayert glanced at the frosted window, cursing under his breath.
"Those bastards actually have us doing this kind of work, it’s just unreasonable. Levins is barely equal to you, Lord Bayert. What right does he have to command us?"
The man sitting in the passenger seat wiped the window with his hand, looking out at the hexagonal base of the tower-like device that was surrounded by their off-road vehicle convoy.
Layers of pale blue radiance flowed through the cracks between each tier of the device.
"Levins really is too arrogant."
Bayert snorted coldly.
But he didn’t say more.
Arrogance is one thing, but whether or not you can beat someone is another.
The man sitting in the passenger seat saw that his boss had nothing more to say and wisely didn’t bring it up again.
In the dim silence, Bayert seemed to realize his response was somewhat embarrassing. He glanced at the tower-like device outside the window and continued, "Once this matter is over, I’ll submit a report to the Bishop, mentioning how this guy interfered with our capture of the traitor Swinte... Ah..."
He exhaled sharply and looked down at his side.
A short-haired woman with a lean figure and thinly dressed was leaning on him, one hand holding medicine, the other pressing on his wound.
Seeing him look over, the short-haired woman trembled, withdrew her hand, and stammered, "Lord, I’m applying your medicine..."
"Are you using such force because you have something against me?"
Bayert abruptly grabbed the woman’s neck and slammed her against the car door.
The woman’s eyes bulged instantly because of the suffocation, she opened her mouth unconsciously, and her hands struggled frantically.
"Lord, there’s only one heretic pharmacist in this area,"
Seeing this scene, the man in the passenger seat reminded him in a low voice.
Hearing this, Bayert let go, staring at the short-haired woman as she cried from the recent impact and suffocation. He reached out, lifted the woman’s short hair,
"I remember that this filthy heretic’s father and son were also brought along, weren’t they?"
"Yes."
The passenger seat man nodded, instantly getting Bayert’s implication, "They’ve all been sedated, piled up in the back of the car. Should we bring her father..."
"Eternal Radiance teaches us to respect our elders,"
Bayert interrupted the man, withdrawing his hand and settling back into his seat.
Then, in the hopeful gaze of the woman, he slowly said, "Wake up her son and bring him here. I believe this lady would enjoy watching her child scream and cry in pain in front of her."
"Yes!"
The man in the passenger seat nodded, opened the door, and stepped out.
"No, please!!!"
The woman instantly lunged at Bayert, "I beg you, please no!!!"
Bayert once again grabbed her by the neck and slammed her against the car door, looking at her coldly, "Heretic, you’ve misunderstood one thing—I’m allowing you to live, that alone is a grace."
"You will go to hell!!!" Cough Cough Cough—"
The woman’s eyes were wide with terror as tears covered her cheeks. She struggled desperately, but his arm was like iron, tightly clamping around her neck.
"Hell?"
Bayert seemed to find something amusing, chuckling, "In the future, I will enter the Eternal Kingdom, and live an eternal life without hunger. I won’t die, nor will I go to the hell you imagine."
"On the contrary, it is you, an unbeliever like you, who will go to hell after death."
As he spoke, his gaze slowly drifted downward, noticing her disheveled clothes that had come undone in her struggles. He smirked, "I think your child would rather see something more interesting later, wouldn’t they?"
"No!!!"
Looking into his eyes, watching as he moved closer to her body, the woman realized something. She reached out to block Bayert and inadvertently pressed on his wound.
Bayert winced in pain, recoiled his hand, and flung the short-haired woman into the gap between the driver’s and the copilot’s seat, pressing her onto the armrest between them.
The driver of the car had long since left, and the copilot had just exited the vehicle, leaving only the two of them inside.
A faint frost once again covered the windows, separating the inside of the car from the outside world.
The woman looked at Bayert in despair, pressing down on her. She wanted to do something, but she was helpless.
Her neck was still being choked by Bayert, and it seemed he was no longer holding back as much, especially after she had just pressed on his wound.
An overpowering sensation of suffocation and tears covered her cheeks, blurring her vision.
Death seemed so close, so within reach that she felt like she could almost touch it.
But in her blurred vision, in the approaching darkness of death, there still seemed to be a sliver of light filling her eyes.
She knew it was merely the pure, natural light after everything had become blurred, yet she still instinctively stretched out her hands, trying to grasp that blurry, fading light.
Bang—
The sound of shattering glass exploded behind her head, a white ’radiance’ piercing through the whole vehicle, through her field of vision, impaling Bayert’s already blurry figure in front of her eyes.
Some warm liquid splattered on her cheeks as Bayert’s figure was hurled backward, pinned against the back seats of the SUV.
A slight cold breeze blew in through the broken windshield.
Click—
The back door opened, and through her blurred vision, she saw a slender figure stepping into the car with the drifting wind.
This figure radiated a strange light, like a candle igniting the soul, burning brightly in the dark night.
A calm voice resonated in the silent car.
"Close your eyes, it will be over in a moment."
The voice was somewhat childish and hoarse, but it seemed to contain a soothing, gentle power.
Then, the figure reached out, removed the ’white light’ that had penetrated Bayert’s body, slowly walked down from the car and closed the door behind him.
The woman moved her body out from the crevice, bowed her head, and closed her eyes.
Outside, there seemed to be the sounds of intense gunfire and some people’s angry roars, interspersed with one or two violent explosions.
Eventually, all the gunfire, roars, and curses came to an end with a massive, deafening explosion.
The powerful blast wave even shook the SUV’s body, making the car sway like a leaf floating in the air.
By the time the explosion had passed, everything seemed to have finally quieted down.
The woman quietly waited until she was sure that everything was completely silent, and then she slowly opened her eyes.
The first thing that came into her view was the body of Bayert, soaked in blood, sitting in the back seat.
His eyes were wide open, staring straight ahead, filled with disbelief and shock from his last moments of life, his unbuttoned clothing stained red with blood.
The woman glanced at the body, pulled off the leather coat he had been wearing, draped it over herself, pushed open the car door, and jumped out.
Along with the sudden, chilly wind that brushed against her face, her body involuntarily shivered.
The pristine snowflakes fluttered down in the light of the street lamps, and across the square blanketed with snow lay bodies oozing fresh red.
In the very center of the square, the tower-like machinery that had been emanating blue light was now gone, leaving behind nothing but a pile of fragments still sparking with electricity and deep craters.
She quickly averted her gaze and followed the path the man from the passenger side had taken earlier, trudging through the blood-stained snow.
After about a few hundred meters, she saw a body lying next to an off-road vehicle—it was the man who had been sitting in the passenger seat.
He was holding a pistol, his eyes wide open as he fell backwards, his gaze flickering with incredulity.
The woman walked over, crouched down, and pried the still-warm pistol from the man’s hands.
Then she went over to the off-road vehicle and knocked softly on the door.
Click—
The window of the off-road vehicle rolled down, revealing a little boy with tear-streaked cheeks crouching on the back seat looking out. Upon seeing the woman’s face, a flicker of surprise crossed his tearful cheeks, followed by a somewhat confused excitement, "Mommy?"
The woman yanked open the door and embraced the little boy in her arms.
"Mommy, what just happened outside?"
The boy asked softly, nestling into his mother’s embrace.
Hearing this question, the woman lifted her head to look around the snow-covered ground smeared with crimson blood.
She gently held the boy, and as if seeing the figure enveloped in flames once again in her vision, she spoke slowly, her words carrying a sort of religious fervor,
"The flames have purged the filth."
The silent snow continued to fall on their shoulders.
······
In a nearby alley, standing next to a black off-road vehicle, He Ao turned his gaze away from the snow-white square.
The soul shadow of the woman he had just saved was strong, indicating she was probably someone who was naturally endowed with a high level of spiritual essence. He Ao could clearly feel that she had noticed the uncontrolled overflow of transcendent power from the Secret Watcher.
However, what attracted He Ao’s attention wasn’t the woman’s spiritual essence but the tower-shaped equipment used by the Eternal Secret Teachings to block signals.
That was clearly military equipment.
He looked at his bracelet, glancing at the screen.
By this time, the communication signal on the bracelet had been restored.
He opened the car door, sat in the off-road vehicle, and set the destination to ’Storm Zone, Ryan Street, Number 13’—the location of the Eternal Secret Teachings church given to him by those in the private room.
——
In an old building to the west of the Withered Tree Bar
"Weah, it’s not too late to surrender now. Hand over the list of your heretic faithful and you can still save your life. No matter how much you resist, it will still be a dead end once Levins arrives."
Lieren, his body covered in golden light, collided with Weah, who was also cloaked in golden armor, and both were sent flying backward.
"You despicable heretic faithful, don’t try to defile my faith with your filthy doctrines."
Weah’s body flew back, crashing through a wall. As he stood up, he gazed at Lieren with anger and said,
"Weah, why be so stubborn? We worship the same Divine Being, and our doctrines are more popular and closer to the guidance of Eternal Radiance than your heresy,"
Lieren straightened up and stared at Weah. "Why cling to your foolish and rigid doctrines? Open your arms, embrace the truth, embrace progress, isn’t that better?"
"Alarmist nonsense. It’s your self-righteous heresy that truly twists the guidance of Eternal Radiance,"
Weah stood up, dusting off his body. His golden armor was already full of cracks. One hand rested on his chest, touching an object fixed there.
It seemed that Lieren had grown stronger; Weah was no longer able to defeat him. If he stayed here dragging the fight, by the time Levins arrived, it would be a dead end for all of them.
If he used that object, he would likely defeat Lieren, but the object could only be used once in a short time and would leave him without support afterward.
While his thoughts were rapidly passing through his mind, his words did not stop. "Lieren, your Levins hasn’t arrived yet, could it be that something has happened?"
"Lord Levins has only encountered a bit of a tricky nuisance, that’s all. Troubles like that, he has dealt with countless times,"
Lieren said with a laugh, "It’s still best to let go of your self-hypnosis..."
Mid-sentence, his tone suddenly paused and his face uncontrollably showed a look of disbelief.
Weah glanced at the special channel earpiece fastened to Lieren’s ear and abruptly realized something. Without hesitation, he dashed towards the outside of the building.
Seeing this,
Lieren immediately lifted his leg to follow, but he reacted a step too slow and Weah had already run out of the old building.
Outside the building, a brawny man armed with a short dagger was running towards the building. "Boss!!! Boss!!!"
"What happened?"
Weah stopped in front of him and quickly asked.
Just now, to prevent Lieren from attacking his subordinates, Weah had lured Lieren to the old building near the alley, but in doing so, he had lost contact with the main force due to the communication blockade.
However, Lieren, equipped with a special short-range link device that could bypass blockers, was somewhat able to communicate with his team.
"Boss,"
The dagger-armed brawny man looked at Weah, out of breath, "Levins is dead!!!"
Hearing this answer, Weah was first startled, then immediately asked, "Levins is dead? Who said it? Who did it?"
"The heretic faithful over there are saying that Levins is dead, his body nailed to the bar’s signpost, no idea who did it."
The brawny man with the dagger quickly said, "Their morale has collapsed, and the attack is weakening."
Weah looked towards the alley and saw that the intense gunfire there had now quieted significantly.
"No idea who did it?"
Weah was taken aback.
Then the image of that ’little messenger boy’ at the door flashed through his mind.
"The ’partners’ we met tonight might be even stronger than we imagined."
He immediately turned his head back, looking behind him.
But Lieren, who seemed about to pursue them, did not come.
"What a pity."
He sighed.
If Lieren had pursued them just now and he had turned around to quickly take down Lieren with the Transcendent item bestowed by the Leader, they might have been able to break through while the enemy was demoralized.
Now that Lieren had realized the problem and did not chase after them, but returned to the main team and stabilized morale, their chances of breaking through had greatly diminished.
Just then, the stocky man with the dagger in front of him suddenly raised his bracelet, and with a look of surprise, said, "Boss, the signal is back!!! The signal jammer seems to have been destroyed as well."
"The signal is back?!"
Weah was startled.
Then he said without hesitation, "Send a message for help immediately!"
...
Meanwhile, at the other end of the alley, Lieren had returned to the center of the Eternal Secret Teachings personnel.
"Lord Lieren! Lord Levins, he..."
A group of White Robe Priests immediately gathered around him.
"It’s alright, it’s alright."
Lieren took a deep breath, "I’ll take over as the commander of this operation now."
"Lord, should we continue the operation?"
The White Robe Priest asked in a low voice, "We may not be able to stop them. Now that the signal is back, the signal jammer has most likely been destroyed, and they are very likely to have reinforcements coming."
"We must resolve them here no matter what, this is the directive from the cathedral,"
Lieren looked around at the crowd, "This is our territory. Can heretic faithful suppress us? Immediately ask the cathedral for reinforcements and let people from other districts figure out a way to block the support of the heretics."
"Lord,"
At this moment, a White Robe Priest hurried over with a document in his hand, looking at Lieren,
"This is intelligence seen by a scout to the east; the Federal Bureau of Investigation is heading this way, and they have a large number of people. It seems like they have mobilized in full force and might even include people from United Industries Mercenary Corps."
"The Federal Bureau of Investigation?"
Lieren frowned tightly as he took the document.
But before he had a chance to open it, another White Robe Priest rushed in, "Lord, there’s news from the west; the Security Union seems to be gathering forces."
"Are these guys in cahoots? Why have they all come out! Now we might not even be able to retreat if we wanted to. If Lord Levins were here, none of this would be happening,"
Lieren rubbed his head, "Send the message to the cathedral; we need more manpower to block the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Security Union."
He looked up at the priests around him, "This is a war against the heretics, we cannot lose, we must show these foolish heretics who are the true servants of the Eternal Radiance!!!"
"Praise the Eternal Radiance!!!"
"Praise the Eternal Radiance!!!"
The surrounding White Robe Priests instantly became excited.
Meanwhile, Lieren was supporting his forehead, vaguely realizing that with the appearance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, this event had taken an unpredictable turn.
Invisible hands were stirring up the vast chessboard called Wint City.
The situation had completely spiraled out of the Church’s control.
If Levins were here, relying on his strength and wisdom, he might have come up with an optimal solution to extricate the Church from this maelstrom.
But there were no if’s in the world – Levins was dead, and Lieren had neither the authority nor the power enough; all he could do was to throw the problem to the cathedral, continuously seeking reinforcements.

Withered Tree Bar
"Levins is dead?"
The person from the Security Union, Jato, looked at Lena in surprise on the other end of the phone, "The guy is so strong and cunning, he died just like that?"
"Although it’s hard for me to comprehend, the other side likely set a trap specifically for him,"
Lena sighed, glancing out the window, "But his body is still nailed to my signboard right now, there’s only one fatal wound on his body, the one who killed him didn’t seem to have much difficulty."
"How strong would that be?"
Jato looked a bit stunned.
"At least B-level,"
Lena retracted her gaze and looked at Jato, "What’s the situation on your end? My people had just arrived, and you had already organized forces?"
"Actually,"
Jato shook his head, "It was the Federal Bureau of Investigation who gave us a heads-up in advance and asked us to coordinate the organizing of forces."
"The Federal Bureau of Investigation?"
Lena was completely taken aback, "They’re involved too?"
"Yes,"
Jato nodded, "They should have arrived in the Storm Zone by now, along with the people from United Industries."
"Looks like there’s going to be a major storm tonight."
Lena sat back down in her chair, letting out a sigh.
"Indeed,"
Jato also sighed, and then he asked softly, "What’s the situation with the Eternal Ancient Teachings? Can’t they deal with the Eternal Secret Teachings?"
"It’s a close match,"
Lena pondered and said, "When Levins was alive, they basically had no chance of survival, which is why I sent people to seek your help. Now that Levins is dead, they are still fighting on their end. For a short while, neither side will probably get an upper hand on the other."
"Levins wasn’t killed by someone from the Ancient Teachings?"
Jato’s tone paused, clearly the news Lena shared was somewhat different from his prior assumptions.
"If those people from the Ancient Teachings had that ability, they wouldn’t be here looking for my help,"
Lena sneered, then her voice gradually lowered, "I’m afraid Levins was killed by another force."
"Which one? Are there other forces in Wint City?"
Initially puzzled, Jato then came to a realization and his voice also grew softer, "You mean the force that wiped out the Kate villa? Why would they attack Levins?"
"The people from the Eternal Ancient Teachings arranged a meeting with that force at my bar today,"
Lena spoke slowly, "They probably thought they could manipulate that force, but clearly, they had no idea what kind of monster they were dealing with."
She sat in her chair, rested her chest on the table, and tapped her fingers lightly on the surface, "What do you think would happen to the whole situation if Levins hadn’t died and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and our forces joined the battlefield?"
"Hm?"
Jato blinked, pondering, "The people from the Eternal Ancient Teachings would be quickly eradicated? Could the people from the Eternal Secret Teachings quickly disentangle themselves from this event?"
"Exactly,"
Lena sighed, "Now the vicinity of my bar is at the eye of the storm, and among those in the eye, only Levins had the strength to quickly resolve the fight,
"Even if he didn’t resolve the fight quickly, just by killing a few from the Ancient Teachings and barely claiming victory, he could then retreat swiftly with the people from the Eternal Secret Teachings, leaving the Federal Bureau of Investigation and our men grasping at air, and the situation would evolve in favor of the Eternal Secret Teachings,
"Moreover, Levins had the status and ability to make that decision."
"So," Lena tapped on the table, "Levins had to die."
The atmosphere in the office fell into a bizarre silence. On the other end of the phone, Jato held his breath as he followed Lena’s analysis. After a while, he took a breath and continued her train of thought slowly,
"After Levins’ death, the people from the Eternal Secret Teachings near your bar couldn’t swiftly eliminate their enemies and had to call for support. When the signal jammer was destroyed and the signal was restored, the people from the Eternal Ancient Teachings were also able to call for reinforcements,
"With both sides’ reinforcements joining in, the scope and intensity of the battlefield would further escalate. Plus, with the participation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and our forces, the struggle would turn into a large storm sweeping across the entire city, and the Eternal Secret Teachings would be forced to confront all their enemies at once."
"But," Jato mused, "couldn’t the Eternal Secret Teachings also withdraw their people, avoid fighting, and avoid this battle?"
"Impossible,"
Lena shook her head, then continued in the face of Jato’s puzzled look,
"The Eternal Secret Teachings have been domineering in recent years, constantly devouring and attacking other forces, including ours, essentially attempting to rapidly expand their power in a short period.
"They’re quickly amassing strength in hopes of crushing all their enemies in one fell swoop, and truly gaining control of this city.
"But their base is not stable; many adherents are recent and not highly loyal. They’re solely out of ’confidence’ in the rapid expansion and hence cling to them,
"This ’confidence’ is crucial. As long as the Eternal Secret Teachings keep winning, it maintains the cohesion of the recently joined forces,
"These compelled forces, relying on their ’confidence’ in the Eternal Secret Teachings, collectively form the ’power’ of the Eternal Secret Teachings,
"As long as the confidence persists, the Eternal Secret Teachings can keep growing until the final ’decisive battle’ where they defeat the Federal Bureau of Investigation and United Industries, becoming the true ruler of Wint City.
"However, if the Eternal Secret Teachings show a large-scale hesitation or failure, the dependent forces would waver, and might even defect.
"Therefore, this time, if Levins had made the retreat order, he could bear all the responsibility. He had the strength and the ability to judge the situation, and only he could have withdrawn the Eternal Secret Teachings from the fight.
"But once the call for help reached the main church, the Eternal Secret Teachings would be left with no way out. To maintain the dependent forces’ confidence in them, they would have to confront the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Eternal Ancient Teachings, and us head-on.
"This would be a ’decisive battle’ triggered ahead of time, at a moment when the Eternal Secret Teachings were not yet prepared.
"Even if the Eternal Secret Teachings knew they were at a disadvantage, they couldn’t retreat because fighting still left them a chance to win. Retreating would lead to an avalanche of betrayal and collapse from the dependent forces, a sure defeat.
"I suspect that the real instigator behind the scenes saw this point, which is why they took out Levins, destroyed the signal scrambler, and possibly even reached out to the Federal Bureau of Investigation,
"This great storm wasn’t a coincidence, but rather orchestrated by someone."
The office was enveloped in a silent stillness.
It wasn’t until after a long while that a soft sigh from Jato broke the silence, "How terrifying..."
He gave a bitter smile, "We didn’t even have the chance to react before we were drawn into the manipulator’s scheme, becoming his pawns."
"Conflict is inherent,"
Lena whispered, "What he did was to ignite the right conflict at the right moment."
She lifted her head and looked out of the window.
Although the reasoning sounded plausible, all were the wisdom that comes after the event; she herself wouldn’t be able to set such a stage.
When she saw Levins nailed to the signboard of his own bar, she was also dumbstruck.
"So, what is the purpose behind this storm caused by that hidden power?"
Jato wondered aloud.
"I don’t know,"
Lena shook her head, "Maybe it’s just to fish in troubled waters, or perhaps they truly bear a grudge against the Eternal Secret Teachings."
The office fell into silence once more.
"Sigh,"
Jato let out a long sigh, then quickly added, "We’re on our way now, be careful on your end."
"Don’t worry about me."
Lena lightly shook her head.
Then she reached out to hang up the video call, raised her bracelet, and glanced at a message she had just received.
"As expected, how could he miss this opportunity to fish in troubled waters."
She sighed, flipped a switch under the desk, and once again, the secret passage opened.
"Money talks, money talks."
She quickly stood up, opened the secret compartment in the bookshelf, took out a small wooden box, and walked into the passage.
The door to the secret passage closed slowly.

Ryan Street
Sitting in the SUV, He Ao rubbed his hands together and looked ahead.
A single building topped with a spire covered in a faint golden glow appeared in his view.
There were a few guards around the building, but it was obvious that there were many empty spots; most of the guards who were stationed there had been relocated, and more were still being moved away.
In the Spiritual Vision, countless twisted patterns were converging above this church.
This was the central cathedral of the Storm Zone of the Eternal Secret Teachings.
He Ao turned his head to look to the other side; in a corner on the opposite side, where the church guards could not see, a place similarly gathering twisted patterns, a group of people were cautiously approaching the church.
