Chapter 776: Chapter 776: The Death of Levins (An Extra-Large Chapter Aiming for Monthly Votes)
Withered Tree Bar Room 305
The lead muscleman glanced at the email on his wristband, and his face immediately changed.
The other strong men in the room crowded around to look at the email, then all of their expressions changed at once.
"Boss, is this for real?"
The man with the curved knife stood at the door, speaking softly.
Boom——
Another booming explosion sounded outside the room.
"I’ll ask the boss, this should be the Security Union’s territory,"
The muscleman sitting in the middle of the room lifted his wristband, but just as he entered the dialing screen, he froze, "Boss, there’s no signal!"
"It’s a signal jammer,"
The lead muscleman’s face became completely stern as he glanced at the wide-open window, "Jump out the window, the heretic faithful should be coming in to search any moment now."
"Boss, what about Black Snake?"
The man with the knife sitting next to him shouted, "She’s still on the first floor looking for that kid."
"Don’t worry, she’s more cunning than you lot."
The lead muscleman fully opened the window, looked out into the night sky, and down at the snow below.
They were all powerful Transcendents; jumping from the third floor would hardly injure them.
The window led to a hidden alleyway, from which they could escape rapidly. They had chosen this particular room for its opportune location.
"Go!"
He turned his head to look at the few men behind him, "Quick!"
The other muscles didn’t hesitate, grabbing their belongings and jumping out one after another, with the lead muscleman being the last to jump.
Boom, boom, boom——
Almost at the moment of their descent, several cannon shells flew from the sky, hitting the walls of the Withered Tree Bar and spraying bricks and debris.
"It’s anti-aircraft fire!"
The man with the short knife rolled upon landing and looked around the snow-covered ground, "Those heretics have blocked the road."
The lead muscleman looked up at the entrance of the alley, where silhouettes slowly emerged from the depths. He drew a submachine gun from his clothing and quickly said, "Charge through!"
"Got it!"
The other muscle men also drew their firearms.
Blazing gunfire instantly lit up the night.
The figures at the front of the alley were immediately taken down, followed by more figures emerging from deeper within the alley, retaliating with even more ferocious firepower.
"Boss, they’re setting up machine guns and Gauss rifles ahead."
The short knife man leaned close to the muscleman and shouted.
Ordinary firearms were hardly effective against D class Transcendents, but heavy sniper rifles, heavy machine guns, and Gauss rifles were not among them.
Especially in the narrow confines of an alley.
"Assassin, take the lead, eliminate the machine gunners and the mortars."
The lead muscleman looked back at the knife-wielding man and quickly ordered.
"Alright."
The knife man nodded lightly, took one step forward, and his figure ’vanished’ from everyone’s ’view’.
Shortly afterwards, the enemy’s gunfire on the other side suddenly eased.
Boom——
Then, an intense explosion ignited in the alley as the Assassin destroyed the enemy equipment.
"Thug, clear the path, we’re charging through."
The lead muscleman called out loudly.
"Yes!"
The muscleman who was originally sitting in the center responded, his body instantly expanding into a three-to-four-meter-tall red muscle giant, charging forward through sparse gunfire.
The lead muscleman immediately led the others to follow, and in almost an instant, they reached the looming ’blockers’.
An Eternal Secret Teachings warrior holding a gun had no time to react before he was smashed by the Thug’s massive fist.
The makeshift barricades were also thrown into disarray by the Thug’s rampage.
"Filthy heretics!"
A man standing behind everyone pulled out a pendant glowing with golden light, powerful armor instantly covering him. He jumped forward, smashing a crater in the ground, and charged towards the red muscle giant.
Caught off guard for a moment, the Thug was sent flying by the seemingly Priest-like man, crashing backwards.
"Die!!!"
The golden-armored Priest raised a Golden Longsword high, ready to pierce the Thug’s body.
But in that instant, another muscleman covered in golden armor burst forth from behind the Thug, kicking the armored Priest and shattering his suit of armor.
The Priest flew backward, hitting a wall behind him and breaking through the bricks.
"Boss."
The red Thug’s body shrank as he spat out a mouthful of blood, looking at the golden-armored muscleman who stood in front of him.
This was the leader of the group.
At that moment, the Priest who had smashed into the wall also staggered to his feet.
But just as he was about to speak, he felt a chill on his neck as if a sharp blade had cut through it.
The Assassin!
His eyes widened in horror, but before he could let out a sound, the sharp blade seemed poised to pierce his body.
And at that moment, a large hand abruptly extended from beside him, grasping at the void.
In everyone’s "vision," a slender man with a scabbard appeared from the void, his neck caught in the grip of that large hand.
Then, with a slight twist and a throw, the scabbarded man was sent flying out.
The leading burly man immediately jumped forward, catching his comrade, but even he stumbled back half a step, one foot sinking into the ground.
The scabbarded man spit out a mouthful of blood and passed out.
The leading burly man looked up at the owner of the large hand, a white-robed, sharp-featured, blond young man.
"Lieren?"
The leading burly man handed his comrade back to the others, eyeing the blond young man.
"Weah, long time no see."
The blond young man grinned, watching the leading burly man.
More and more people gathered behind him, all eyes on the leading burly man.
"Lieren, you can’t stop me,"
The leading burly man glanced around at the Eternal Secret Teachings warriors, touched his chest, and his expression darkened slightly, "Step aside now, and I can still spare your life."
"Why not try and see if I can stop you? I know that your heretic leader has given you something, but do you think we would be unprepared?"
Lieren smiled, "You don’t think I can mobilize this many people, do you? Weah, I’ll prepare funeral fireworks for you, if you can leave a whole corpse, that is."
Hearing this, the face of the leading burly man finally turned completely grim, "Levins is here too?"
All the people behind him were visibly shaken at once.
----
Within a dark, cramped, and decrepit alley, a group of people in white robes were moving swiftly through the snow.
"Lord Levins, all the passages around us have been sealed, and the sky is under surveillance; we haven’t spotted the boy, he’s likely still nearby," said the man next to Levins in a low voice to the one leading.
"Hmm."
Levins nodded in acknowledgment.
At this moment, a white-robed young man, in a rush, also caught up from behind,
"Lord Levins, we’ve found those Heretic Faithful, a total of six people, just like the intel suggested. Five of them are being blocked by Lord Lieren in the western lane, and one was spotted in the bar; she injured our men and ran out. Now the northern squad is pursuing her."
The white-robed young man glanced at the special frequency communicator in his hand and reported to Levins swiftly, "The Withered Tree Bar’s owner, Lena, might be connected to those heretics. Do we need to take control of her?"
"No need,"
Levins shook his head calmly,
"Prioritize the issues. Maintain pressure on the people inside the bar and demand Lena’s cooperation.
"She’s a businesswoman; she’s not likely to confront us, especially when the signal is jammed and she can’t reach outside support.
"Although we are numerous, there’s no need for a two-front battle. Focus our forces on one task at a time. The Security Union’s issue is significant, but it can wait until we’re free to deal with it afterward.
"Avoid making too many enemies in a short period; that would give the Heretic Faithful an opportunity to break through. Order the southern squad to support Lieren, ensuring those heretics are kept there, at least until I resolve the issue here.
"They won’t escape once I’ve dealt with that kid and am able to get there."
With that, he paused, turning to the white-robed young man, "What about the battle in the east? Have we dealt with the heretical reinforcements? According to the data previously reported, shouldn’t their forces be weak?"
At this question, the white-robed young man’s expression shifted slightly, speaking softly, "This is what I was about to report to you."
Levins raised an eyebrow, sensing something was off, and stopped walking, facing the white-robed young man, "Take your time and explain."
"The ’off-road vehicle convoy’ that suddenly appeared in the east has been dealt with. We defeated them and captured them,"
the young man whispered, "but the situation was a bit different from what we had anticipated."
"Hmm?"
Levins looked at him.
The young man carefully glanced at Levins before continuing,
"These people were not ’Heretic Faithful’ but were the ones who went to support the Cloud District today. They claimed they saw the high-ranking priest Swinte’s vehicle and pursued upon discovering Swinte’s defection."
The atmosphere around them became gradually colder, and the white-robed young man shivered before speaking cautiously, "They ran into us by mistake..."
"Then why did they run?"
Levins asked coldly.
"They thought we were an ambush from the Security Union."
The young man looked at Levins’s darkened cheeks and stammered.
"How many did we lose in the eastern squad?"
Levins placed his hand on his forehead and continued.
The young man dared not meet Levins’s gaze and quickly answered, "Over a third, their resistance was exceptionally fierce, and they also lost about half of their men in the fight, with the rest being mostly wounded. However, their high-ranking priest Bayert survived."
"So we’ve lost a considerable number of men and have besieged and severely beaten our allies?"
Levins rubbed his face, taking a deep breath.
The stillness of the dark night was eerily silent, the cold air creeping into everyone’s collars.
All the white-robed priests surrounding Levins didn’t dare utter a word, witnessing their ’composed gentleman’ show such unbridled anger for the first time.
After some time, Levins inhaled deeply and said, "Have that fool Bayert guard the signal jamming device, don’t let any distress message get out until the battle is over, then have the eastern squad join Lieren in the west."
"Yes,"
The young man in the white robe nodded, then asked in a low voice, "Sir, does that Swinte need..."
"Leave him be, it’s not so easy for a high-ranking Priest to betray us. That guy is very likely a trap meant to lure that idiot Bayert here, probably a decoy,"
Levins picked up the pace and continued forward, "Even if he’s not a fake and he truly has betrayed us, it must be related to the forces behind that child. As long as we find that child and take care of him and the forces behind him, these issues will no longer be a problem."
He moved quickly across the snowy ground, "The reason those guys lured Bayert over here is probably because they realized they’ve been discovered by us. They want to create chaos and escape in the confusion. They have sharp awareness, but they won’t be able to get away."
A hidden pressure spread throughout the entire alleyway, everyone was holding their breath, and even daring not to breathe too loudly
Levins pressed on, voice cold, a faint golden sheen slipped over his body, "I will personally execute them, hang their blood-stained corpses for all to see, so everyone will witness the consequences of opposing the Eternal Radiance."
A slight cold wind blew under the curtain of night, carrying with it light snowflakes that fell upon the cloaks of the passersby.
——
Withered Tree Bar
The tightly closed office door was slowly pushed open, and a young waitress entered.
"How’s the situation outside?"
The woman in the red dress, Lena, looked out the window at the pitch-black city and asked in a low voice.
People from the Eternal Secret Teachings have taken control of the hall, they are driving the guests out of all the private rooms and inspecting them one by one. However, they haven’t taken any excessive actions, being fairly polite to most guests,"
The waitress closed the door and answered softly.
"The person who came this time is a clever one,"
The woman in the red dress sighed, "It’s not easy to find someone smart and calm among those fanatical madmen,"
She turned around and glanced at the waitress,
"If this guy makes his way up and gains power later on, he will likely be a great threat to us."
She walked over to the desk and pressed a hidden switch. With a click, the bookshelf behind the desk slowly opened, revealing a dark, narrow underground passage.
She looked up at the waitress, "The passage is quite narrow, only one person can get through at a time, but it’s not long. You should be able to get around the signal jamming range of the Eternal Secret Teachings by going out this way. You know the way, right?
"There might be spies and surveillance equipment from the Eternal Secret Teachings nearby. Although their attention should all be on the troublemakers from the Ancient Teachings for now, you still need to be careful."
"Boss, you should go first."
The waitress glanced at the passage and said quietly.
"If I leave, the people from the Eternal Secret Teachings will surely detect it immediately, endangering you all. At least for now, they won’t make a move against us, I’m safe. Don’t worry about me,"
Lena shook her head and said softly, "After you get there, spread the word so the Security Union can gather people for backup. The Eternal Secret Teachings, after dealing with those troublemakers, will definitely turn their attention to us."
Then she waved her hand, "Go on, the people from the Eternal Secret Teachings should be coming for me soon."
The waitress nodded quietly and quickly stepped into the passage.
Lena reached out to toggle the switch, closing the passage.
She let out a light sigh and turned to look out the window again.
The falling snowflakes landed in the silent city.
——
Not far from the front door of the Withered Tree Bar, in a nearby alley, a young boy in a down jacket leaned against an off-road vehicle, reached out to catch a falling snowflake.
The white ice crystal, accompanied by the heavy footsteps coming from the other side of the alley, melted in the palm of his hand.
He lifted his head, looking toward the direction from which the footsteps came.
A row of figures in white robes stopped on the other side of the alley, almost simultaneously lifting their heads to watch the young boy leaning against the off-road vehicle.
"Have you been waiting here for me?"
Levins glanced at the off-road vehicle, his voice deep.
"Yeah, you could understand it that way, after all, it’s much easier for you to come to me than for me to find you."
He Ao stood up, picked up the Knight’s sword that had been leaning against the off-road vehicle and slipped it into the Scabbard.
"Interesting,"
Levins reached out his hand.
Someone in the crowd grabbed the Scabbard and handed over a silver Longsword. Its hilt hovered just above Levins’ outstretched hand.
Levins grasped the hilt, and with a ’zing’ sound, the cold metallic blade appeared under the snowy night.
He pointed the blade toward the ground, and a golden light instantly covered the entire blade.
He glanced at the night behind He Ao, then gazed intently at He Ao, as if trying to see through him, "Don’t you have any other ’friends’ here?"
"Unfortunately, no,"
He Ao placed the Knight’s sword vertically down, the pristine white Scabbard brushing through the snow as easily as if it were plunging into soft dirt, standing firmly at He Ao’s side.
"Well then,"
Levins frowned slightly, looking at He Ao’s thin physique, "What exactly are you?"
Invisible ripples emanated around him, and cracks branched out like the limbs of a growing tree, suddenly spreading from the walls of the abandoned low-rise buildings on either side of the alley and from the snow-covered ground.
These ’cracks’ grew rapidly, reaching in front of He Ao almost in an instant.
The snow on the ground melted, flowing into the fissures, even the ice crystals falling from the sky turned into cold droplets of water.
Then, these cracks halted right in front of He Ao.
The bricks beneath He Ao’s feet shattered instantaneously, his cloak fluttered slightly.
But that was all.
The cold night wind brushed his open collar, yet the boy stood still, as immovable as a steep summit.
Even the soft down jacket remained intact.
"Merely an orphan who came back from the Storm Sea."
He Ao retracted the Divine Sense covering his down jacket, calmly watching Levins, and reached out to grip the hilt of the Knight’s sword beside him.
"Interesting,"
Levins watched this unfold, and though it was unbelievable, after disregarding all other possibilities, the most unbelievable might just be the truth.
He Ao slightly raised the tip of his sword, covered in a golden radiance, and softly sighed, "It seems we were all wrong. You’re smart, really smart. The Storm Sea is rife with danger, but also filled with endless possibilities."
Layers upon layers of golden light enshrouded his body, covering his skin.
"Although I’m curious about what exactly you experienced in the Storm Sea, it seems I no longer have the time to ask. I hope your corpse will provide me with some interesting answers."
The White Robe Priests standing behind him took out one pendant after another. The golden radiance covered the bodies of these priests, then formed an invisible ’bridge’ in the void, linking to Levins.
The golden light gradually retracted into Levins’s body, and a terrifying pressure instantly spread throughout the surrounding void.
Some sort of proxy sacrifice method, perhaps.
These priests paid the price, while the leader received the ’Grace.’
He Ao watched all of this unfold, gripping the hilt of his knight’s sword, slightly raising it.
Hum—
The knight’s sword slipped out of its scabbard, exposing a segment of its blade.
The pressure emanating from Levins grew stronger, and the White Robe Priests behind him bent over in submission, taking heavy breaths.
That terrible pressure weighed on He Ao too, nearly suffocating his slender frame, and his blood nearly congealed.
But still, he stood tall.
The snowflakes in the sky no longer fell; even the raindrops had vanished.
Under He Ao’s additional layer of Spiritual Vision, Levins was already entangled with a multitude of twisted patterns, having broken through the Grade B boundary.
But he had only one energy convergence point.
"I have a question," He Ao said, holding the hilt and looking at Levins.
"Hm?"
Levins looked at He Ao.
His priests had already collapsed under the pressure, crawling on the ground.
"How do you really get into the main cathedral?"
The young man’s slender body stood firm, his deep gaze fixed on the enemy before him.
In that moment, the view from Super Memory overlaid He Ao’s original ’field of vision.’
As the marker was released, ambition, desire, greed, endless thoughts surged into He Ao’s mind.
Levins did not answer but leaned forward, and the golden longsword suddenly rose.
At the same time, the snowy-white blade of the sword flashed out of its scabbard,
Clang—
The sharp sound of gold striking iron reverberated under the dark night sky.
Golden and white figures crossed paths.
Invisible ripples dispersed in all directions like ripples splashing in the void.
Sizzle—crack—
In an instant, endless cracks densely covered the abandoned low-rise buildings on both sides.
"You can’t control your power very well," He Ao stated, standing where Levins had been, his face pale as he spit out a mouthful of fresh blood.
Hum—
The golden blade suddenly fractured, and the shattered sword fell to the ground.
Levins, standing behind He Ao, clenched the remaining part of the broken sword, turned around, and glanced at the wound on his chest, from which blood surged out like a fountain.
The falling snowflakes slowly descended, resting on their hair and shoulders.
His eyes were filled with incomprehensible shock, but it quickly turned into a bitter smile and a gentle sigh.
"Sigh."
He stumbled forward, and with blood spraying, he knelt to the ground and finally collapsed completely.
Everything he strived for shattered with that sword strike.
He Ao raised his knight’s sword and slaughtered the remaining frenzied White Robe Priests who charged at him.
The blood stained their robes and mingled with the snowflakes swirling in the sky.
He turned slowly, approached Levins’s body, and picked up the broken sword.
Then he lifted the broken sword, stabbed it through Levins’s corpse, raised it high, and hurled it toward the low-rise buildings with all his strength.
Boom—
The cracked low-rise building was struck with a tremendous force, creating a large hole. The white-robed body, like a streak of light, passed through the building, through the snow curtain in the sky, and was nailed to the giant neon sign of the Withered Tree Bar behind it.
Blood with an orange glow flowed down the broken sword, dripping onto the pristine snow in front of the bar.
"Who is that!"
"It’s Lord Levins!!"
"Lord Levins is dead!!!"
"Lord Levins is dead!!!"
Amidst the panicked shouts coming from afar, He Ao inserted his blood-drained knight’s sword back into the scabbard, then pulled out the scabbard stuck in the ground, walked over to the off-road vehicle, and opened the door.
He looked up at the sky, reached out his hand, and caught a snowflake falling from the sky.
The white ice crystal melted in the palm of the young boy.
The black off-road vehicle started slowly, gliding over the icy and snowy road surface.
Boom—
Boom—
The two low-rise buildings collapsed behind the off-road vehicle, stirring up endless dust.
