Chapter 778: Chapter 778: The Gaze of Eternal Radiance (Super long Chapter, seeking monthly passes)
Under the silent snowfall, the crowd hidden in the corners quickly disappeared from He Ao’s blind spot. They were clearly heading towards the main entrance of the church.
Obviously, someone had also noticed the current lack of defense at the cathedral and were trying to seize the opportunity amidst the chaos.
He Ao withdrew his gaze, recalling the information he had "sensed" in Levins’s mind earlier through Super Memory.
That was the only piece of information that surfaced in Levins’s "memories" when he inquired about how to truly enter the main cathedral.
The information was brief, without any scenes or other thoughts—just a short sequence of awkward syllables that didn’t seem to mean anything.
But whenever He Ao recalled these syllables, he could vaguely feel a kind of distorted praise echoing in his mind.
This praise was very similar to the contamination he had experienced when he was Peering into the Truth above the city and came into contact with the twisted radiance.
He Ao drew back his thoughts, no longer recalling those strange syllables, and glanced instead at the faint golden glow atop the church. He picked up his Knight sword, pushed open the car door, and climbed out from the side of the street.
"Cough—"
The cold wind of the snowy night blew against him as he covered his mouth and coughed lightly.
Since Levins’s strength had surpassed Class B, he could only kill him by activating Super Memory and, incidentally, obtain information from Levins’s thoughts about entering the main cathedral.
Even though the whole process lasted only a brief instant, and he used no Fist Technique or Martial Techniques to augment the strike, it still caused his body tremendous strain and injury. The intense pain that had subsided was now flooding his body once again.
However, compared to the time he killed the Octopus Monster in the Storm Sea, his condition was much better now.
He glanced at the church at the end of the street but didn’t go directly towards it. Instead, he turned a corner and entered a small alley at a distance from the church.
Then he looked up at the tall buildings flanking the alley and quickly began to climb directly up the taller building, carrying his Knight sword on his back.
Soon, he reached the top of the tall building.
But he did not climb up immediately because, atop the building, there was a simple ’observation post’, and someone dressed in the attire of the Eternal Secret Teachings was ’on duty’ here.
The person faced the church and seemed a bit relaxed, yawning.
At the same time, not far from He Ao, there came a rustling noise from the other side of the high-rise.
He Ao, with his hand on the edge of the rooftop wall, turned his head towards the direction of the sound.
Another person had also climbed this building and jumped onto the rooftop.
It was a muscular man with a fierce countenance, covered in blood, carrying a broad sword on his back.
He Ao pondered for a moment, then shifted his body towards the direction from where the man had climbed up.
The duty officer was attracted by the noise and immediately turned his head. Upon seeing the man, he raised his gun and began to shoot.
The sudden gunfire resonated sharply in the dark night.
The man, facing the barrage of bullets, drew his broad sword from behind and charged with a sprint. The dark blade swept through the night, slicing the duty officer to pieces.
This skirmish was very brief—almost ending as quickly as it began.
The man kicked the duty officer’s body aside, stood at his post, and looked up in the direction of the church. Then, he picked up a miniature walkie-talkie and spoke quickly, "The post is cleared."
Almost instantly, intense gunshots rang out from afar.
It seemed someone was attacking the church.
The man put down the walkie-talkie, withdrew his gaze, and began checking to make sure the duty officer was dead, all the while carrying the broad sword.
Simultaneously, his eyes scanned the surroundings.
Then he suddenly noticed a young boy standing where he had just climbed up.
"Kid?"
Seeing He Ao, the man paused for a moment, then seemed to realize something, "Were you captured by these heretic cultists?"
He Ao turned and looked down at the bottom of the building.
Beneath this side, where the man had climbed up, there were some completely destroyed tents, and several corpses dressed in shabby clothing who looked to be vagrants were carelessly piled in the snow.
They seemed to have been dead for a while, their wounds very similar to those of the still-bleeding duty officer of the Eternal Secret Teachings.
He Ao silently pondered, returned his gaze, jumped down from the wall, and looked up at the man inquiringly, "Why do you call them heretics?"
"They are certainly heretics,"
The man, holding his broad sword, smiled gently and approached He Ao step by step, "They have twisted the doctrine of Eternal Radiance to preach about an Eternal Divine Nation. If not heretics, then what are they?"
"So you’re also a believer of Eternal Radiance?">
He Ao’s gaze sharpened as he pondered, "Is this a civil war among cultists?"
"Eternal Radiance is not an Evil God,"
Hearing He Ao’s description, the man shook his head and said solemnly, "It is a Divine Being that can bestow strength and guide us into the future."
"The wanderers below, have they also reached the ’future’ you spoke of?"
He Ao gazed at him calmly.
"For the future guided by the Eternal Radiance, some ’necessary deaths’ are inevitable,"
The man held his broadsword and was now very close to He Ao, "Kid, it’s very dangerous here, let me take you to a place that’s forever quiet, where no one will bother you."
The black broadsword suddenly lifted and slashed towards He Ao’s neck.
The man then felt a chill on his own neck, and immediately saw his body flying away rapidly, he saw the young boy retract his Knight’s sword, passing by his headless corpse.
A cold wind with drifting snow brushed his cheeks.
Bang—
The burly man holding the broadsword fell forward without his head.
At the same time, his head hit the ground, rolling to a stop beside the corpse of the Eternal Secret Teachings believer whom he had just killed.
He Ao calmly stepped onto the high platform, tiptoed, and looked towards the direction of the church.
As expected, the view from this building was excellent and the surroundings of the church were clearly visible.
It was the perfect sniping and observation spot, so both sides were fighting over it.
At this moment, in He Ao’s view, at the main entrance of the church, the people he had initially seen in the corner were trying to break through the main entrance.
Nearly all the guards around the church had gathered to fend off the attackers.
The church’s guards were not as strong as the attackers, but at this moment a layer of light golden glow was shrouding the church, forming a translucent ’shield’ covering the entire church.
The assailants couldn’t break through the shield for the time being, so the battle seemed to have come to a stalemate.
However, it appeared the attackers were not completely unprepared, as they clustered together, surrounding a man in light orange clothing in the middle.
That man held a small, golden metal device with some sort of vertical ’pointer’ in his hand, aiming at the church’s main entrance, seemingly gathering some kind of power.
The guards had noticed the man’s actions and were frantically attacking his location, trying to stop him.
The sounds of gunfire and the clash of cold weapons barely ceased, and the battle had become intensely fierce.
However, He Ao suddenly realized that at the end of the street behind the church, a red-haired woman in a black leather jacket was cautiously and swiftly approaching the church from the rear.
Although that area was also enveloped by the golden shield, the guarding soldiers had all gathered at the front entrance.
A feint?
He Ao mused thoughtfully.
But in fact, the guards had not completely abandoned the rear of the church. Every so often, one guard was sent from the front to patrol around the back of the church to check for any issues.
After watching for a while, He Ao lifted his wristband to check it and, sure enough, there was no signal. He didn’t know which side had activated the jamming device.
He stepped back a few paces, took a running start and leaped directly onto the rooftop of an adjacent building that was slightly lower.
After a brief roll to dissipate his momentum, he quickly jumped again, landing on the rooftop of another building on the opposite side.
After several such leaps, he arrived on the top of a low building at the rear of the church, a step ahead of the red-haired woman.
Then he glanced at the back of the church.
It seemed that the church had no rear exit, but on the second floor and above, there were a few large windows.
He Ao pondered for a moment and then jumped straight down alongside the low building.
Upon landing, he quickly scanned his surroundings.
Soon, he spotted a few tents collapsed under the snow in a corner.
He looked up again at the surveillance camera at the back of the church, then walked along the camera’s blind spot, brushed off some of the snow, and managed to prop up a tent next to the corner of the street.
Many collapsed tents were nearby; they seemed to be a gathering place for wanderers that had been abandoned, and the residents inside were no longer to be seen.
He Ao quickly opened the tent, took off his Knight’s sword from his back, and crawled inside.
The tent was not tall and was obscured by a billboard; the streetlight above was completely broken. From his position, He Ao could see the entire back scenery of the church, but standing at the back of the church, which was lit, one could barely see this spot.
He Ao pulled the tent flap mostly closed, leaving only a slit open, placed the Knight’s sword beside him, and watched over the back of the church.
Underneath the chosen tent, there was a layer of soft synthetic cotton padding, which was already a bit damp. In the corner of the tent, there was a messy, smelly, and somewhat moist cotton coat, which felt a bit cold to the touch.
Next to the cotton coat was a somewhat old small liquid fuel stove.
For wanderers, such a coat and a fuel stove were valuable assets, without which it would be difficult to survive the cold winter.
Any wanderer leaving would not do so without taking these items with them.
It seemed the former resident of the tent hadn’t left naturally.
And in the midst of He Ao’s contemplation, the red-haired woman in black leather had already made her way to the back of the church.
Her face seemed somewhat familiar, as if he had seen her at the Withered Tree Bar before.
At this moment, the church’s golden shield had not yet been broken, and the red-haired woman looked up at the front as if she was confirming the position of the church’s surveillance cameras.
Some commotion could be heard in the distance, seemingly people quickly approaching—these were the patrol soldiers on their routine rounds.
Hearing this noise, the red-haired woman’s brows slightly furrowed, she glanced around, and then her gaze settled in the direction where He Ao was.
After a brief moment of thought, she swiftly walked towards He Ao, sticking to the blind spots of the surveillance.
Soon, her figure had passed by He Ao’s tent, and he could hear rustling sounds nearby, as if another tent close to him had been set up as well.
A moment later, a guard dressed in Eternal Secret Teachings attire appeared behind the church, glanced around, and seeing nothing, hastily ran back.
After confirming that the guard had completely left, a faint sound of a curtain being lifted resonated in the silent street.
He Ao slightly closed the gap in the curtain that he had been using for observation.
Shortly after, a figure emerged from afar and made its way to the front of He Ao’s tent, then stopped in front of the curtain.
It seemed that the person had already discovered him.
He Ao gripped the Knight’s sword in his hand.
Then, the figure pulled out something resembling a piece of paper from their pocket and swiftly pushed it through the partially open curtain seam of the tent.
Afterwards, she proceeded forward without stopping.
The piece of paper fell to the ground and He Ao noticed that it seemed to be a folded federal coin.
He frowned slightly, picked up the federal coin, and unfolded it.
It was a fifty federal coin bill with a slip of paper tucked inside.
The note, written in a somewhat strange font, read:
[This place is dangerous, do not listen, do not look, wait until everything is quiet, then leave here immediately.]
He Ao put down the note and then looked at the fifty federal coin note next to it.
So, was this to keep him silent?
He pocketed the note, opened the curtain gap, and watched the outside.
This time, the red-haired woman had already reached the edge of the church’s camera blind spot.
From the other side of the church, a violent uproar could be heard, seemingly indicating that the battle there had reached its final moments.
Soon after, a dazzling brilliance suddenly lit up, and the surrounding city for a moment was as if a massive camera’s flash had been triggered, bright as day.
In the wake of this dazzling light, the church’s golden shield suddenly shattered.
Seizing the moment, the red-haired woman drew a handgun from her waist and, with a few loud shots, shattered the surveillance cameras behind the church.
Then she fired several shots at the windows on the second floor of the church and, when the glass was covered in cracks, she leaped, burst through the glass, and jumped into the church.
At that moment, He Ao also emerged from his tent.
He glanced at the broken opening, leaped with all his might, and jumped in as well.
This appeared to be a closed office, with faint damp footprints on the ground, seemingly left by the red-haired woman, extending all the way to the office door that stood ajar.
He Ao slung his Knight’s sword over his back and hurriedly followed the footprints.
The entire church interior seemed to be in utter chaos, and it appeared to be completely dark, with not a single light on.
A large number of White Robe Priests were rushing towards the first floor, trying to resist the invaders who were breaking in from the outside.
He Ao quickly located the figure of the red-haired woman.
She was hastening along a narrow path at the back of the church, her movements fast and sharp as she deftly avoided the nearby priests and moved swiftly forward.
Spiritual Vision granted He Ao a different kind of ’sight’ in this gloomy and chaotic vision, allowing him to easily discern the figures of those around him with Transcendent powers.
He cautiously followed far behind the red-haired woman, heading deeper into the church.
The red-haired woman seemed quite familiar with the construction of this church, always able to find some secluded passages that bypassed the crowds and led directly to certain places.
Soon, He Ao followed her to the church’s fifth floor.
There were very few priests here, but in the darkness, it seemed something else was breathing.
The red-haired woman appeared to be very wary of the darkness nearby, and her speed gradually slowed down.
Her figure moved forward slowly, continuing to penetrate deeper into the church.
Just as she passed a corridor, a spider creature as tall as a person suddenly burst out of the pitch-black hallway.
He Ao felt the red-haired woman almost scream, but ultimately she restrained herself carefully. She held an item in her hand embedded with a pointer on a disk, from which a pale golden glow spread out.
As the light brightened, the spider monster circled around the red-haired woman, then turned and walked deeper into the corridor.
The red-haired woman let out a long sigh of relief and then continued towards the deep end of another corridor that intersected with this one at a crossroads.
He Ao followed her, and as he passed through the corridor, the giant spider suddenly lunged out, baring its fangs at He Ao.
Then He Ao’s sword pierced through its body, tossing it back into the depths of the corridor.
Several more monsters appeared on the path behind them, all of which the red-haired woman avoided with the help of her pointer-embedded disk.
Without such a prop, He Ao had no choice but to permanently silence these monsters before they made a sound.
The two of them, one in front of the other, swiftly arrived at the eighth floor of the church.
This floor had no monsters. The red-haired woman, seemingly following some guidance, reached a small door deep on the eighth floor, then pushed it open and entered.
He Ao quickly followed.
By the time he reached the door, he saw the red-haired woman take a deep breath, as if bracing herself with a certain resolve, and then she turned the pointer on the disk.
Accompanied by a burst of twisting light, she vanished on the spot.
He Ao entered after her, surveying the entire space behind the door.
There were no lights in this space, but it seemed as though an invisible radiance spread throughout, illuminating the entire area.
This was a spacious ’hall.’
The hall was circular, vast and imposing, with rows of wooden benches tightly arranged on the floor.
The ceiling of the hall was a beautiful dome covered in relief sculptures, which appeared to have magnificent stained-glass windows set into it, and around the walls of the hall were more of those magnificent stained-glass windows.
However, in reality, there was not a single window in the hall.
He Ao walked up to one of the ’windows’ and stared at it, the vibrant paints filling his vision.
These ’windows’ were not ’real’, but were ’painted’ on the walls, their exquisite craftsmanship and bright colors making them seem like true, glowing stained-glass windows.
But in fact, they were just stone walls.
At the far end of He Ao’s view was a pair of huge, thick ’doors.’
And these doors, too, were ’painted’ on; there was no seam, nor could they be pushed open.
Apart from the small door through which He Ao had entered, there were no other ’passages’ connecting this hall to the outside world.
And the back of this small door was ’painted’ to blend in almost completely with the surrounding walls, resembling a ’stone wall.’
He Ao gradually walked between the rows of benches, making his way to the center of the hall.
He turned back to look in the direction facing the ’painted’ ’doors.’
The first thing that caught his eye were two large stained-glass windows, and in front of those windows, facing all the aligned wooden benches, was a ’wooden cabinet’ carved from stone.
There was nothing on top of the cabinet, but the patterns carved on its surface suggested that the cabinet seemed to be ’illuminated’ by something.
If judged solely by size and specification, this hall seemed like it should be located at the entrance of the first floor of the church, not in its deepest part.
He Ao observed all this.
Expansive, warm, oppressive, bizarre.
In his spiritual vision, this place was filled with distorted patterns, almost completely covered by them.
It seemed that this was the place that connected to the real ’main sanctuary.’
The red-haired woman must have used some special prop to get inside.
He Ao did not have such a prop, but he had information obtained from Levins.
He focused on the huge stone ’wooden cabinet’ and slowly opened his mouth, ready to speak out the syllable.
Then he paused slightly.
After a brief contemplation, he took out a pendant emitting a faint glow and held it in his palm.
Then, an ancient syllable as if passed down from time immemorial, emanated from his lips,
"Atmolaya!"
Beyond the endless reaches of space and time, it seemed as if an infinite and vast presence turned its gaze toward this place.
The clutched pendant shone with dazzling radiance, endless praise and twisted corruption exploded in He Ao’s mind.
A blinding light enveloped his body for an instant.
Everything around him twisted in his field of vision.
