Chapter 149: Chapter 149: Old Residence (Please Subscribe, Add to Favorites, Request Monthly Tickets)
The gaunt man looked at the slightly sickly youth before him and swallowed.
This youth was nothing like the information the intermediary had provided, just an ordinary minor high school student. His seasoned tone sounded more like that of a gang lord who had been involved with gangs for many years and didn’t blink an eye at murder.
He didn’t think it was a problem that He Ao was so young yet so strong. Indeed, there were some people in this world who possessed unfathomable powers. Although he had never seen them, he had heard that any underground gang would steer clear of such individuals.
The man swallowed again, looking at He Ao.
Since the intermediary was unscrupulous and deceived us into a death trap, it is only reasonable for me to betray him.
"The intermediary is Noad from Avis Bar, that damned deceiver cheated us," the man glanced at his dead underlings, then as if suddenly remembering something, added, "Noad also had us collect an extraordinary plant."
He moved slowly towards the depths of the small building, leading He Ao to a rectangular metal box, "I don’t know if you would like it."
"Open it."
He Ao watched him, whispering softly.
"Alright."
The gaunt man gingerly set down his hand and, under He Ao’s gaze, opened the metal box.
The box opened, revealing the yellow flowers that were sealed within ice blocks.
Corpse Flower.
"This flower seems to be called Corpse something... If you like it..." the man, while retreating backward as He Ao was looking at the box, suggested, "I can decide to give these to you."
His hand slowly let go, reaching towards the inner pocket of his clothes, and a black gun handle slowly became visible.
"Have I forced or threatened you? Have I ever expressed any intention of extortion?"
However, just at that moment, while still focused on the Corpse Flowers, He Ao suddenly asked in a low voice.
"No," the man shuddered in fear, and then noticing that He Ao’s gaze was still on the flowers, he breathed a sigh of relief and continued to reach into his inner pocket, "This is a gift I am giving to you willingly, entirely of my own volition."
The youth in front of him seemed somewhat sickly, but he had always been gentle in speech, never said anything threatening, yet a terrifying oppressive feeling was suffocating the gaunt man.
As he spoke, his hand finally touched the cold handle of the gun.
Then, in that instant, he violently grabbed the gun handle, pulled out the gun, and pointed it at He Ao. He didn’t waste any words, ready to shoot right away.
Just as his index finger was about to pull the trigger, a streak of silver light burst forth from He Ao’s hand, cutting through the void, and accurately plunged into his throat.
It was a blood-stained folding knife.
The gaunt man was struck by the tremendous force, leaning backward, falling to the ground, staring ahead as bright red blood spurted from his neck.
He Ao closed the metal box calmly, picked up the handle on top of the box, and looking at the gaunt man, whispered softly, "The giving of a gift, is lawful."
The gaunt man looked at He Ao, opened his mouth, wanted to say something, but the bright red blood gushing from his throat blocked all his words.
He Ao, carrying the briefcase, walked out of the building and casually turned off the light.
The entire street once again fell into pitch-black silence.
----
After walking out of the street, He Ao’s hand shook, nearly falling to the ground.
The box was still quite heavy, and Joey’s weak body was barely able to lift it.
This must be a cooling box, used for carrying valuable items that require storage under cold conditions.
Super Memory has 30 seconds of cost-free time each day. Because Joey’s body had no special abilities, He Ao had to constantly activate and deactivate Super Memory to extend the time he could fight.
Even so, he had overused it by several seconds in the past few minutes, causing his soul to become somewhat weakened.
So from this perspective, he actually quite needed these Corpse Flowers now.
One use of the Corpse Flower was to restore the soul.
This was tantamount to offering He Ao the chance to consume drugs to replenish his life.
Carrying a suitcase, He Ao walked a distance, then found a shopping mall, where he checked the suitcase into a secure locker. The storage fee was a bit high, three federal coins per hour, but it was cheaper than taking a taxi.
After checking in the suitcase, He Ao ventured deeper into Aston District, returning to an old street at the deepest hours of the night.
Standing at the end of the street, he looked up and noticed the neon sign of a not very prominent street store entering his eyes.
Eno Restaurant.
Then he withdrew his gaze and turned towards the other side.
By his side, a TV outside a small bar was broadcasting some kind of political commentary program,
...
"For the past two months, the protests against Mayor for the exotic beast nurturing incident have not only failed to stop, but have escalated. Following the failure of the last impeachment, the city council has initiated a second impeachment against the Mayor. Many netizens believe this impeachment will be successful," the host looked toward his guest, a long-haired, ponytail-sporting silver-haired man,
"Professor Serle, do you think Mayor Wente will be the first Mayor to be impeached from office?"
"While everyone’s enthusiasm is high, I might have to throw a wet blanket on it, Mayor Wente will not be impeached from office."
Serle smiled at the host, then paused. Continuing under the host’s surprised gaze, he said, "You might think I’m a supporter of Mayor Wente, in fact, I’m an opponent. I really dislike him, but here, we have to mention some interesting laws."
Serle took out a thin book, showcasing it to the camera, revealing its gilt title, "Dawn City Constitution," "This is the revised edition of the Dawn City Constitution from Federation year 654, the one we’re currently using. As we can see, Article Two is all about the Mayor. It says this in Section Four,"
The screen displayed the text of Article Two, Section Four,
"’The Mayor of Dawn City may be impeached and convicted for ’treason’ and other crimes.’ In other words, if Mayor Wente is successfully impeached this time, he will immediately face the prosecution’s charges, becoming the first convicted Mayor in the history of Dawn City. If found guilty, Mayor Wente could face at least a hundred years of imprisonment,"
At that point, Serle paused, "Although I too would like this to come true, it’s impossible. Mayor Wente could completely avoid these convictions by making good use of the rules in this constitution."
He flipped through the constitution, and another part of the page was displayed on the screen, "According to Article Two, Section Two of the constitution, the Mayor of Dawn City has the authority to pardon any criminal in Dawn City.
Of course... during impeachment, he can’t pardon himself, but if we make reasonable use of another article of the constitution, it’s very easy for him to be acquitted,"
Serle continued to turn pages, showing a new article on the screen, Article Twenty-Five, "According to Article Twenty-Five of the Dawn City Constitution, in the event that the Mayor is removed from office, dies, or resigns, the Deputy Mayor shall become Mayor. Most of the time, the Deputy Mayor is the Mayor’s election partner, a part of the Mayor’s interest group."
He closed the Dawn City Constitution he was holding, "Taking all this into account, we can actually make a rough guess at Mayor Wente’s next move. If impeachment is unavoidable, to prevent himself from being convicted, he will submit his resignation to the city council.
After his resignation, the duties of Mayor will be assumed by the current Deputy Mayor Evenson, who shall continue the term that Wente had not completed. At that moment, Evenson will exercise his mayoral privileges to pardon all of Wente’s crimes.
Therefore, Mayor Wente will not be impeached from office, because before he could be impeached, he would likely have already resigned."
...
He Ao withdrew his gaze from the TV, passed by the small bar, and walked toward the apartment building behind the street.
He went upstairs familiarly and stopped in front of a door in the corner.
The black keypad lock had accumulated a thin layer of dust, suggesting that no one had been to this place for a long time.
This was Roy’s apartment.
With his finger on the keypad, He Ao entered the code.
Click—
Accompanied by a soft sound, the lock clicked open.
As He Ao had anticipated, Vianne and Naomi had not changed the passcode for this place.
He Ao rested his hand on the doorknob and gently pushed open the door.
