Chapter 1436: Chapter 1436: Saving People
Terry Moore naturally knew about the shady deed Karen did in the dead of night.
But he was an honest man.
Honest men usually swallow their grievances silently.
Only this morning, he accidentally added a bit of “seasoning” for Karen.
He saw Karen eating with relish.
“I won’t stoop to your level! But when we get out of here, if anyone dares to say they’re tougher than me, I’ll ask them—I’ve eaten shit before, have you?”
Karen’s stomach churned, and his gut began to spasm.
But breakfast had already been hours ago and had long since digested.
“So, how’s it looking?” Terry Moore asked while craning his neck below. “Are they on the move yet?”
The two of them had been lying in wait on the outskirts of Hidden Tennyson Villa under Julius Reed’s instructions, waiting for the right opportunity.
After days of observation, the people inside finally seemed ready to leave.
Different regions, different times.
Swimming City was in the dead of night, while Hidden Tennyson Villa had daylight streaming in.
“The limo outside is prepped, and most of the guards are out. Seems like they’re leaving.” Karen pulled out a pocket telescope, observing the enemy’s movements while muttering, “Must be nice being rich! Just this custom stretch limo costs over a hundred million. They have this much money, and they’re still resorting to kidnapping? Where’s the justice?”
“Who told you they kidnapped the sister-in-law for money?” Terry Moore sneered. “Only someone as shallow as you would keep talking about money. Brother Davenport and I share the same problem—we’re just too handsome. It’s definitely some crazy woman infatuated with Brother Davenport who took the risk to kidnap the sister-in-law!”
“Ah!” He sighed deeply, lamenting, “You wouldn’t understand our kind of troubles.”
“Uh… actually, I’m quite handsome myself.” For a moment, Karen was unable to argue back.
He felt a little defeated in terms of looks.
“After we rescue the sister-in-law, I should ask Brother Davenport when he’ll help me fix up this face of mine.” Karen started rambling while keeping his eyes fixated on the entrance of Hidden Tennyson Villa.
Inside the villa.
“High Steward, His Majesty is beginning to grow suspicious.” A short-haired female officer dressed in a red sparrow-patterned robe knelt on one knee, looking troubled. “If His Majesty learns of this, there’s no avoiding the backlash for you.”
“I’m simply standing up for what’s right on His Majesty’s behalf!” The Emperor’s Sister, dressed in a golden sparrow robe with flowing hair cascading over her shoulders, countered sharply.
Although the Emperor and she shared a ruler-subject relationship, they were as close as sisters in private.
After hearing that the man the Emperor had her heart set on already had a wife elsewhere, how could she endure that?
What kind of lousy man was this?
Blind as a bat!
Claiming she needed a break to clear her mind, she brought her trusted subordinates on a so-called vacation.
Finally, she discovered Quella Radcliffe’s whereabouts at Hidden Tennyson Villa.
The emperor’s faction wielded power that extended heaven-wide, with intelligence networks that spanned the entire realm.
Locating Quella Radcliffe’s hiding place was a trivial matter.
When they launched a surprise raid on Hidden Tennyson Villa, the Emperor’s Sister had Quella Radcliffe confined, attempting to force that lousy man to divorce.
But it was useless.
Except for a round of menacing threats during their first call, the man had remained unreachable ever since.
“But you and I both know His Majesty wouldn’t want things to escalate like this.” The female officer raised her head, speaking earnestly. “High Steward, your absence has forced His Majesty to personally attend to all major and minor affairs. Moreover, I’ve heard rumors suggesting His Majesty wants you to visit Swimming City this time.”
“Swimming City?”
The Emperor’s Sister extended her hand, and her attendant immediately handed her a jade hairpin.
After tidying her loose hair, she raised an eyebrow and asked, “What am I supposed to do in Swimming City?”
Swimming City—the City of Sin.
Anyone tied to Seven Veins would surely know about Swimming City.
For such a foreign metropolis, what could the Emperor’s intentions be in sending her there?
“It’s said that Sylvan is in Swimming City,” the female officer murmured.
“That vile woman again!”
BAM!
The Emperor’s Sister slammed her palm against the table, fuming, “One day, I will kill her!”
Sylvan!
The Emperor’s lifelong nemesis!
A woman whose power and beauty paled in comparison to the Emperor, yet through despicable tactics had been able to win the affection of that lousy man!
“Wretched vile woman!” the Emperor’s Sister cursed furiously before ordering her guards, “I’ll return to the Emperor’s Palace first. Once matters there are settled, you bring this vile woman back to my residence.”
After finishing her order, the Emperor’s Sister glanced at the still-unconscious Quella Radcliffe and strode out decisively.
“They’ve left! The cars have left!”
Karen’s throat moved as he gulped.
“Goddamn it, if you don’t leave soon, I won’t even have shit left to eat.”
From the moment they arrived at Hidden Tennyson Villa, the duo had been monitoring day and night without pause.
What they had assumed would be a fast and decisive operation had unexpectedly devolved into a war of attrition.
Terry Moore had brought thirty buns and five cans of food, yet out of pity for Karen’s hunger, he generously sold them at sky-high prices—one bun at a million, one can at a whopping ten million.
After holding out for two days, Karen could no longer endure and ended up buying a few buns at exorbitant rates.
Of course, the “filling” this morning came free.
“Move in!”
As soon as the limos left, Karen and Terry Moore stealthily crept forward.
…
City Lord’s Mansion.
“Xander Cook’s crimes, if not publicly punished during the trial, will be hard to quell the anger of the masses!”
Four people occupied the guest hall.
Ian Jorden and the Commander of the Upper Three Routes.
Though Swimming City was governed by nine factions, ultimate power resided with the Upper Three Routes.
Unless the matter was of paramount importance, these four in the hall had sufficient authority to make decisions.
“The Lower Three Routes operate outside the city boundaries, and strictly speaking, they reach far more people than we do. Now that Ox Town has been bombed, Hagan Marsh’s headquarters has been destroyed, and Xander Cook even dares to kill the City Lord’s investigators—if this isn’t the guts of a bear and the heart of a leopard, I don’t know what is!”
Adler Haw, the commander of the Third Route, flushed red-faced reeked of alcohol.
The outer cities were open to everyone, but the inner city had high entry barriers.
“Hey, Old Three, I hear you’ve been cozying up with the Cook Family lately?”
Ian Jorden fixed Adler Haw with a piercing stare and spoke with some discontent.
The City Lord’s Mansion and the Nine Routes were the rising powers.
The Two Kings and Four Ministers represented the old aristocracy.
While the transition between old and new forces remained peaceful, innate hostility lingered.
Now, Adler Haw’s apparent closeness with the old aristocracy was hard for Ian Jorden to stomach.
“Old Three, the Cook Family’s ambitions are no secret to you. Don’t do something foolish at this juncture! Dragging down the Nine Factions would make you history’s greatest villain!”
Another Commander lazily kicked up his leg, dressed in a blue Tang suit while holding a cigar, keenly displeased. “Stop pulling these stunts! The Xander Cook situation is messy enough as is!”
“Understood, understood.” Adler Haw’s face flushed all the deeper, clearly drunk. “It was just a simple meal. After all, Old Three’s territory happens to oversee their area. No ulterior motives!”
After speaking, he inwardly smirked.
Once he entered Azure Emperor’s ancient tomb and obtained what he sought, these three would be irrelevant.
Though his thoughts brimmed with arrogance, Adler Haw kept his outward demeanor pleasant. “It’s just a meal. I, Adler Haw, follow the lead of the three esteemed Commanders without question!”
“In that case, let’s organize a public trial at first light. It’s late—everyone should head home.” Ian Jorden glanced at his watch.
It was already three in the morning.
“I’ll personally go and smooth things over at Hagan Marsh’s territory.” One Commander rose, tossing his cigar into the ashtray and leaving with the other two.
As soon as the trio departed.
A figure silently emerged from the shadows.
“How did it go?”
From behind the screen, Isabella Warm asked.
She knew the figure well and perfectly understood their precise timing.
“I couldn’t make out their faces or hear their conversation clearly. But I ran into someone at Ghost Market who asked me to deliver this to you.” The figure opened their palm.
It was a small pill.
