Chapter 59: A Hole of Blue Fire?
Chapter 59: A Hole of Blue Fire?
Waking up the next morning, Lauren remembered that she slept in her bedroom last night and had no recollection of how she ended up in the room she shared with Alec.
She pulled herself up and saw Alec standing by the window, looking outside. Unlike her who just woke up and was still in her nightdress, he seemed to be ready for the day. He wore a crisp white collared shirt with its long sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
She wondered if he even slept. But then, vampires were creatures of the night who didn’t need sleep at all.
"You shouldn’t be sleeping in another room. People might think we are on bad terms," he said without looking at her and she knew he was the one who brought her to the room.
"I heard what happened last night. You really don’t run out of wicked ideas, do you?"
"How is the investigation of deranged humans going on? Are there other people who were turned recently?" she asked instead of talking about how she slept in another room or how she sabotaged her sister.
"None so far."
"If they have the means to turn humans into savages with the weapon they hold, then why aren’t they corrupting humans as much as they can?"
"The answer is simple," Alec replied in a stern tone. "Whatever this weapon they have, it is limited. The two savages we found must be just part of the test to see if it really works. I think they are preparing more of it at the moment and once they are ready, they will paint Evardin with blood."
While taking a bath, Lauren’s mind wandered around it. No one could point out who was conspiring with the rebels and it would be hard to find what they were using to corrupt humans. Evardin would soon be in chaos so she should gain power in the court as soon as possible to handle things the way she wanted.
"Alec, since you are working on different cases with the council, what do you think is the punishment the bastard officer deserves for sullying my daughter’s honor? How about a death sentence?" King Martin asked over the breakfast table.
Everyone was present but Eloise never dared speak a word since she took a seat. With the scandal that she caused, she didn’t feel like facing anyone due to embarrassment. Dominic was also present. He was staying in the castle for a few days until their betrothal was formally announced. After that, he would go back to Bodeville to inform his family about the wedding.
"Death sentence is the only punishment he deserves, father," Lauren butted in and glanced at Alec. "Because of what happened, the royal family suffered an embarrassing scandal and Eloise became a laughingstock. I guess that is enough to behead the man."
Alec who noticed Lauren’s meaningful glance said, "I did not witness it with my two eyes, Your Majesty. But I can say my wife is right. It damaged the royal family’s reputation and put Princess Eloise in a bad light. I shall say he deserves a death sentence."
Alec couldn’t read what was running through Lauren’s mind but she must be up to something again. He even wondered if she would ever stop surprising him.
Although Eloise didn’t truly love Sean Devitt and only used him for what he could do for her, she didn’t want him to end up dying because of her. She wanted to speak and express her contempt but she knew doing so would only infuriate her father more so she just stayed quiet.
Later that evening, in the castle’s dark dungeon, the King requested everyone in the royal family to watch the execution of the officer. Although the man had a cloth covering his head when he was put on the scaffold, Eloise couldn’t help but close her eyes the moment he was executed by the head guard of the dungeon, while everyone else showed no emotion.
The moment Lauren and Alec went inside their chamber, she asked him.
"Where is he?"
"Why don’t you tell me first why you don’t want him dead?" He looked at her suspiciously. "It couldn’t be that you took interest in your sister’s lover."
"Of course not," Lauren shot him an annoyed look.
"Why then?"
"He is just being used by Eloise. I don’t think he is a simple human but he is pretending to be one, and it is quite suspicious."
After breakfast this morning, she talked to Alec and told him to put someone else on the scaffold and bring Sean Devitt out of the castle. He didn’t want to do it at first because she didn’t give her reason, but she promised to tell him later on.
"I told you my reason, so where is he?"
"In my mansion’s dungeon," he answered. "Shall we go there and torture him? I love tortures the most."
"Let’s go then. Let’s use the back doors of the castle to not catch attention. It’s late and the servants might find it odd if we leave in such an hour."
Lauren was about to walk to the door when Alec spoke.
"There is no need for that. We can leave the castle without a single person knowing." There was a certain look on his face that told her he had his ways.
"And how shall we do that?"
Alec smirked mischievously.
His eyes turned crimson and when he snapped his fingers in the air, a large hole appeared in front of them out of nowhere. A hole surrounded by blue fire which looked like a portal.
Lauren’s lips parted. She never heard about a living person who was capable of creating portals as it was a very rare ability even for elder mages and vampire mages, and she couldn’t believe he could do it. Only very few had superior abilities than most, and Alec seemed to be one of them.
She remained staring at him for a moment, wondering how powerful he was exactly.
"If you continue looking at me like that I would think you had fallen for me, princess. I still suggest you shouldn’t though. I only know how to break women’s hearts."
