Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord -
Chapter 58: Empty Bed
Chapter 58: Empty Bed
A loud slap resonated in the castle’s main hall.
"Father!" Eloise cried while her palm was on her cheek. Her eyes were wide open.
"Martin!" Queen Thalia took a step forward but the King raised his hand to stop her.
Everyone was in the hall except Alec and Lauren. Dominic woke up from his slumber hearing the commotion downstairs and he didn’t expect what scene was waiting for him. His betrothed, Eloise, kneeling before the King and crying.
The maids who saw how Eloise was brought by the royal guards inside and witnessed the King’s ire immediately scurried away, not giving themselves a chance to pry as it was a strict rule in the castle that they should not mind the matters between the royals.
"I did not raise you to be someone this wicked!" King Martin’s voice thundered. "How could you have an affair with a lowly human officer! You are betrothed, Eloise! You are putting our family in shame!"
"N-no, father... it is just a misunderstanding! There is nothing between me and-"
"If there is nothing between you two how can you explain why you met him in that secluded place at midnight? Don’t you dare make a fool out of me! People working for that gossip paper caught you in the act, now everyone in Evardin knows what you have done!"
Eloise kept shaking her head. "No, father! Someone did this to me! Where is Lauren? She must be the one behind this!"
"Oh, seems like you are looking for me, sister." Lauren descended the stairs nonchalantly and put her hand on her mouth to fake a yawn. "What is happening here? The noise disturbed my sleep." With her wearing a long nightdress and her hair on the loose, she looked like someone who just dragged herself out of the bed.
"Lauren is here. What are you talking about, Eloise? Instead of acknowledging your mistake and asking for forgiveness, you are accusing your sister!"
"Martin, why don’t we talk about this in private, Prince Dominic is here. It is embarrassing-"
Queen Thalia was cut off by the King. "This something we can’t hide Thalia. I am deeply embarrassed for what this child has done and I want Prince Dominic to see that I’m not tolerating her."
Dominic cleared his throat. "That is not necessary, Your Majesty. I want to give Eloise a chance."
Lauren’s brow shot up. As she expected, Dominic wouldn’t mind Eloise having an affair with another man. He wouldn’t marry her because of love, after all. It was just all about what he could gain.
"We have yet to know each other deeply and our betrothal might be overwhelming her, so I understand if she made a mistake," Dominic said like the kindest living man on earth. "I hope you don’t blame her, Your Majesty. The officer must be the one at fault. Who knows if he bewitched Eloise to gain something from her?"
"Prince Dominic is right, Martin. You should investigate this matter before putting the blame on Eloise," said the Queen.
Meanwhile, Sean Devitt was imprisoned in the castle’s dungeon under the King’s command. Lauren knew that he might be sentenced to death one of these days for offending the crown, but with him on the castle’s grounds it would be easier for her to know what he was hiding.
After the King angrily left to go back to his chamber, Prince Dominic helped Eloise and sent her back to her room. Cassandra looked at Lauren sharply as if she knew it was her doing but she didn’t say a word and just walked away.
The Queen remained. She was fuming.
"I know you did it."
"Did what?" Lauren asked innocently.
"Stop your act, Lauren. We both know you envy my daughters. You are thirsty for attention and you want to ruin Eloise."
"You are hurting me with your accusations, mother." She touched her chest and acted like she was hurt.
"Don’t you call me that!" Queen Thalia fired, her nose flaring.
Lauren smiled and turned away. She walked back to the stairs. She was in a good mood this evening and she didn’t want the Queen to ruin it.
"I’m not yet done talking with you! How dare you turn your back on me!"
Acting like she didn’t hear anything, she continued to walk without looking back.
Lauren went to her original bedroom and not to the room she shared with Alec. Both rooms were on the west wing and just one door apart from each other.
Pushing the door open, the cold air greeted her. Not a single candle was lit and the windows were open. Sally must have forgotten about closing them.
She closed the door behind her and lit a few candles with a match. She went to the windows after and closed them, leaving only one window open.
Getting a bottle of wine from her drawer, she poured herself a glass and went to the opened window. She felt a little cold when the cold breeze came but she stayed standing there while drinking wine. Although she hated the cold, sometimes she just wanted to feel the nature, to feel the breeze and watch the darkness in silence.
After drinking three glasses of wine, she started to feel sleepy. She closed the window before walking to the bed.
Alec returned to the castle less than an hour later. He was expecting a sleeping Lauren when he entered their bedroom but when his eyes fell on the empty bed, he stopped.
Thinking that she was just somewhere around the castle, he soon found her sleeping in her own bedroom.
He stood beside the bed to look at the sleeping princess who didn’t even bother to cover herself with a blanket.
"How bothersome," he muttered under his breath before picking her up from the bed.
Smelling the scent of wine from her, he figured out she had drank again. Back when they were still staying in his mansion, he noticed she was having a hard time sleeping at night and she usually took a glass of wine or two before going to bed.
After laying her on their bed gently, he covered her with a blanket and stared at her face for a moment before going to the table with his things.
