Kissing Hellfire: Marry Me, Evil Lord
Chapter 57: Hidden Eyes

Chapter 57: Hidden Eyes

The sun had already set but the servants were still not done organizing the things in Lauren and Alec’s chamber. Lauren wanted some changes and Alec’s things also needed their own spaces, especially his table and load of case files.

While she was busy supervising the servants, the door opened and Alec went in. She looked at him with disdain.

"I’m heading to the council, my wife. I will make sure to be back by midnight," his tone was cold despite how sweet his endearment might sound.

The endearment was like a curse in her ears but as much as she wanted to mock him, she couldn’t because the maids were listening.

"Take care, my husband, and don’t take too long. I will be waiting," she said with a smile but her eyes held a disdained look.

Alec didn’t say more and left the room.

By the time of dinner, Lauren didn’t join the others in the dining hall with the reason that she was still organizing their new chamber.

When it was finally done and the servants had left, Lauren asked Sally to come. The maid went inside the chamber discreetly carrying a maid’s clothes. Lauren knew that the Queen and her sisters had been keeping an eye on her, so she needed to be extra careful in leaving the castle at night. So, she thought of a disguise.

Wearing maid’s clothes and her long hair tied in a bun, she managed to leave the castle without anyone noticing her. A few yards from the back of the castle, a black shabby carriage with two horses awaited. Lauren went inside and one word from her was enough for the coachman to drive the carriage to the town.

The carriage stopped at an abandoned dilapidated establishment. Stepping into the uneven stone pavement, she now wore a black cloak with its hood hiding her hair and face.

She pushed the establishment’s door open. The hall was dark and had no single candle but she managed to find her way to the stairs through the faint light coming from the windows.

Upstairs, in a dark room with a few lit candles, her right-hand man, Darius, stood by the broken window at the corner. When the room opened, his eyes immediately flew to his mistress.

"Your Highness," he bowed.

"Is everything ready?"

"Yes. Once we are in the vicinity and it is already time, I shall send a signal to Julian."

Lauren nodded.

Half an hour before midnight, the two rode in the carriage to Bellmurk chapel, one of the small chapels in the town which hadn’t been used in a couple of years.

The carriage parked in a distance and they walked through the shadows until they arrived at the chapel. They didn’t go inside, however, and stayed outside by the windows in the east. With them moving stealthily, Sean Devitt who was inside the chapel sitting alone didn’t notice their presence.

What Lauren wanted was for Eloise to be caught red-handed with her secret affair with Sean Devitt, which wouldn’t only put her in great embarrassment but would also subject her to the King’s ire. The officer was a mere human who was just a low-ranked public servant and their father would surely not take it lightly. It would also bring Prince Dominic embarrassment and although Lauren knew he wouldn’t break the betrothal for that reason, hurting his ego was enough for now.

A few minutes before midnight, the chapel’s door opened quietly and Lauren was right that her sister would come.

Hope glistened in Sean’s eyes when he saw Eloise but it was quickly replaced by anger and frustration.

"What are you doing, Eloise? Are you really marrying that prince?" Sean spat.

"You shouldn’t be sending secret messages to me from now on, Sean. You know I have no say in my marriage. If my father wants it then I can do nothing."

As Lauren watched the two, she thought that Eloise was cunning and didn’t mingle with the people below her, so she wondered how did she fall for a simple human like the officer.

"But you promised me that you would make a way for us!"

"That was before Lauren married Lord Everston, Sean! With my brother dying, I thought as the eldest daughter I wouldn’t have to fight for the throne because it should be given to me without a question, but I realized my father has other plans. He only sees his daughters as useless women who were made to serve men so he wants to pick one of his sons-in-law to be his successor. If I don’t marry a prince, do you think I will stand a chance against Lauren whose husband is a powerful lord?"

"You know I love you, Sean but I won’t just stand aside while a lowly concubine’s daughter is taking what is rightfully mine. If you love me, you should understand."

Rightfully hers? Lauren wanted to laugh at how wrong Eloise was. In this world, there was no such thing as someone bearing the right to the throne from birth. It was survival of the fittest. The one who had the power to grab it first would be the winner. Rivalry was everywhere. It was either you take what you could or you would be left with nothing.

"So, you just want me to stand by the corner and watch you marry someone else?" Sean’s jaw clenched.

"Once everything is fine we still can be together. I have plans for us, you need to trust me-"

"Plans for us?" Sean smirked, his eyes bloodshot. "Do you even truly care for me, Eloise? Or are you just keeping me because I am useful to you?"

"You know that’s not it!"

"Oh, really? If I was a normal human who could give you nothing, would you still want me?"

Eloise couldn’t speak.

Meanwhile, Lauren grew confused. Sean Devitt wasn’t a normal human? But when he fought that deranged little girl, he didn’t do anything special and just relied on his strength.

"Send the signal now," Lauren whispered.

Darius nodded and left her side.

She thought Eloise really loved Sean to risk her reputation for a lowly human, but now she realized she was wrong. She didn’t know the whole story but it seemed like the officer had something special in him and Eloise was making use of it.
