Chapter 153: Pacified by His Warmth (2)

Alec helped her change clothes even when she said she could do it by herself. He didn’t take his eyes off her the whole time, not giving her a chance to leave his sight even for a single second.

While he was buttoning her nightdress on the back, she thought they could start talking about what happened. Now that he had seen her in that situation, she was willing to tell him everything.

"About what happened..." She began, but before she could continue, Alec was quick to cut her off.

"I want you to rest for tonight. We have all the time tomorrow."

"Okay," she sighed when he was finally done. She thought he would be eager to talk about it. She was relieved that he wasn’t pressuring her.

She went to bed without looking at him. But she was all aware of his eyes never leaving her. Once she had laid down, he went to the bed too, and laid beside her. He pulled the duvet up to her chest.

Their gazes met as the flames in the hearth blazed more.

"Why do you keep the hearth ablaze when you can warm the room with your presence?" She couldn’t help but ask.

"I love flames. I’ve grown accustomed to it. Besides, it’s a waste of energy to warm the entire room during winter when the hearth serves its purpose well."

Lauren nodded and laid on her back to face the ceiling instead of facing Alec. A decent space was between them like how it usually was every time they slept together. But this time, she felt like she wanted to close the gap and lean on his warm body. The comfort she felt from his warmth was like no other, and she must admit she desired it. It felt like a necessity she couldn’t live without. A part of her she just found.

When she closed her eyes to sleep, she felt a gentle kiss on her hair and an arm wrapped around her waist.

The smell of tea filled her senses when Lauren woke up the next morning. Breakfast was already on the table and half of the curtains were rolled up. The snow had stopped but outside was filled with icy ground and mist.

Alec was on the table and reading a court report but as soon as he saw her waking up, he dropped the papers to the table and set his eyes on her.

"Good morning. I had the breakfast sent here. The tea was served a few minutes ago. It’s still hot but I can always reheat it if you want."

Lauren cleared her throat, "Thank you."

As she walked towards the table, his stare made her grow anxious.

"Do you feel alright?"

"Yes," she replied and took a seat. She could sense that he was eager to ask her the important questions about last night but he was holding back because he didn’t want her to feel uncomfortable. He was being considerate and she appreciated it.

"Should I take a leave for a few days?" Alec suddenly asked in the middle of sipping his tea.

"Take a leave...?" Lauren was confused.

Alec nodded. "Yes. I should take a leave as the King," he said like it was a job he could easily leave.

"Is that a joke? A King is a position you cannot take as a simple job, Alec."

"But I have a more important matter to attend to. I think my wife requires my attention."

She was dumbfounded.

"If it is about what you saw last night, then let me tell you this. You don’t have to worry, I can take care of myself—"

"Which is a lie and you know that," he put down his teacup and looked at her in a way that was full of authority. It was like he was using his dominance to make her submit to him.

He looked calm but with how his dark eyes bored into hers, she knew he was just holding it back.

"Have your breakfast first."

"No. Let’s talk about it now," she insisted. She didn’t have the appetite to eat anyway.

"Fine, then." He nodded and leaned to the table, "I know you were not just simply born with sensitivity to cold. Has it something to do with what happened in the woods last night?"

So he figured it out even before last night? Lauren thought he wasn’t able to see through her lies.

"You were most of the time pale and had lower body temperature than normal people. I also didn’t buy your excuse when you said you were poisoned during the tea party at Haystone’s mansion. I had the food and drinks checked but none of it affected a mage or a vampire which meant that the poison the rebels used only affects humans. I stayed silent because I thought you would tell me yourself, but after last night I don’t think I can still feign ignorance. It must be a serious condition."

"I suppose it is," Lauren sighed. It was indeed a very serious one and she wondered how Alec would react if she would tell him her condition was slowly killing her and she would die soon.

"Yes, my monstrous appearance last night has something to do with my condition."

His brow shot up as if she said something he did not like.

"You did not look the least bit monstrous last night, Lauren. Why would you think so?"

"Did the darkness blind you? My eyes were all white and I grew some white hair. My nails were long and I absorbed that vampire’s energy like an evil monster."

"If you think you were a monster, well you were not one for me. I’m sure you didn’t kill him just because you want to. He tried to harm you, didn’t he?" His voice was low and dark when he asked the question. Her silence told him her answer. "Then he deserved it. As for your appearance, you were lovely. Don’t fret, I still see you the same even after seeing your dark side. In fact, I have grown to like you more."

He smirked, "I didn’t know you look so sexy when you kill someone."
